Please take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal. Imagine telling someone you meet today what you’re going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn’t it feel good to say it out loud? Don’t you feel one step closer already? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.

Any time you have a goal, there is some work that needs to be done to achieve it. Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you’d actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and he acknowledges(認(rèn)可) it, psychologists have found it’s called a “social reality”. The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it’s already done. And then, because you’ve felt that satisfaction, you’re less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary. This goes against the traditional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right?

In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a Professor of Psychology, wrote a whole book about this. And in 2009, he did some new tests that were published. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests—everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment(許諾) to this goal to the room, and half didn’t. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Now those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.

1What do the words “social reality” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Completion of the goal.B.Necessary hard work.

C.People's acknowledgement.D.A sense of satisfaction.

2What does Peter Gollwitzer try to tell us?

A.Writing down the goal is very helpful.

B.Achieving personal goal needs more time.

C.Keeping the goal secret makes people work harder.

D.Making the goal public makes people less satisfied.

3How did Peter Gollwitzer prove his idea about people’s goal?

A.By giving figures.B.By giving examples.

C.By making a survey.D.By making comparison tests.

4What will probably happen if you tell your friends your goal?

A.You will be more confident.B.You will not gain satisfaction.

C.You are less likely to realize it.D.You’ll be much more motivated.

The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it‘s already done. 故選A項。

Now those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average可知,Peter Gollwitzer通過做實驗發(fā)現(xiàn)沒有宣布自己的目標(biāo)的人堅持完成目標(biāo)的時間更長,這說明他想告訴人們將目標(biāo)保密會讓人們更加努力。

Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible. Write your answer on the answer sheet.

When we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often think: “I’m going to go to bed earlier tomorrow!” But however determined we are, chances are that we don’t stick to our promise. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination(拖延癥)”.

According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2014, bedtime procrastination is a common problem. In their study, 53 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week.

It’s found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn’t stop doing other unimportant things, which were keeping them up in the first place.

“People who generally have trouble resisting temptations and sticking to their intentions are more likely to delay going to bed.” Floor Kroese, a psychologist at Utrecht University, further explained to HuffPost.

Yet, according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame. Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bed time. In order to check the influence of the body clock on sleep, psychologists at Ulm University in Germany studied the sleep patterns of 108 people in February. It was found that those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning.

“The intention to go to bed earlier is not enough,” Jane Kuhnel, a psychologist at Ulm University, concluded in Popular Science. “Biological processes need to support this intention.”

People always think that bedtime procrastination isn’t a big problem, but as Kroese told Popular Science, “the choices we make that affect out sleep could turn out to be pretty important for our health.”

From VOA learning English, this is the Health & Lifestyle report.

Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to let it cool down a bit before drinking. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer.

In fact, the United Nations' cancer research agency decided to list hot drinks with lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes as “possibly carcinogenic.” In other words, each one could cause cancer.

Researchers at IARC(The International Agency for Research on Cancer) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食管).

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, researchers said “this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.”

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60 degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers.

In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as “possibly carcinogenic.” WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.

Christopher Wild is the director of the IARC. When he spoke with the AFP news agency, he said the results “suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.”

But how common is esophageal cancer? Worldwide, it is the eighth most common cancer. Cancer of the esophagus killed about 400,000 people in 2012.

I’m Anna Matteo.

B. Smoking and alcoholic drinks are related with esophageal cancer.

C. Esophageal cancer is the most common cancer.

D. Hot drinks have something to do with esophageal cancer.

4The relationship between “coffee” and “beverages” is just like________

A. Rose and flowers B. Tea and milk

A video of a three-year-old girl being kicked by her own mother during a photo shot went viral on Thursday, indicating China’s underperformance in regulating the emerging child modeling industry.

The girl, known as Niu Niu, was physically abused (虐待) by her mother in several videos. The videos have annoyed Chinese media and Internet users alike. Many netizens and scholars call for local authorities to carry out further investigations into possible child abuse.

In response to the public outcry (強烈抗議), Niu Niu’s mother issued an apology via Sina Weibo on Thursday, condemning accusations of abuse. She noted that she was merely guiding her daughter for better shots and the girl is well looked after.

Despite her apology, many E-shops which used Niu Niu’s images for brand promotion have canceled their cooperation with the mother, while over 110 well-known child garment shops on Taobao have signed up for a campaign to provide better protection for child models.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt once said. If we want to accomplish anything in life, let us remember that we should never give up.

Viennese - born composer Frederick Loewe, whom we remember from his musical scores that include My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot, was not always famous. He learned to play the piano with the great masters of Europe and achieved huge success as a musician and composer in his early years.

But when he immigrated to the United States, he failed as a pianist. For a while he tried other types of work. But he never gave up his dream and continued to play the piano and write music. During those years, he could not always afford to make ends meet by playing the piano.

One day, bent over the keyboard, he heard nothing but the music that he played with inspiration. When he finished and looked up, he was surprised to find that he had an audience - three men who were seated on the floor. They said nothing and made no movement toward the piano. Instead they dug into their pockets, took out all the money they had, placed it on the piano and walked out, empty-handed. Deeply touched by the beauty of his music, these men recognized excellence and responded to it.

Whatever you do, try your best. If what you do is worth doing and if you believe that who you are is of value, then you cannot afford to be content with mediocrity (平庸). When you choose the path of excellence through this life, you will bring out the best in yourself and receive the best it can offer in return.

1What can we learn from Roosevelt’s words?

A.It is difficult to do our best.

B.It is important to be successful in life.

C.We should be strict with ourselves.

D.We should face the future with the most dreams.

2What happened to Frederick Loewe after he immigrated to America?

A.He lost his hearing.B.He led a hard life for a while.

C.He enjoyed great success.D.He became a famous pianist.

3Why did the three men pay Frederick?

A.They were supposed to do that.B.They wanted to show their sympathy.

C.They were moved by his performance.D.They wanted to make friends with him.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Practice makes perfect.B.Never give up your dream.

C.It’s never too old to learn.D.Rome was not built in a day.
