                                        The elephant and the fly
A disciple(信徒), who was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest, asked his
teacher, "Why are most people’s minds restless? What can one do to still the mind?” The teacher
looked at the disciple, smiled and told him a story:
An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing
(嗡嗡叫) near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and
the elephant waved it away once more.
This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and
noisy? Why can’t you stay for a while in one place? ”
The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly
in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?”
The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I
get immersed in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy
my food and chew it better. I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around.”
Upon hearing these words, a smile appeared on the disciple’s face, “I understand! If my five senses
are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. If I am in charge of my five
senses and attention, then my mind becomes calm.”

Possible version:

An elephant told a restless fly that being absorbed in doing things helped him stay still. After hearing
the story from his teacher, the disciple realized that only by controlling his senses can he obtain calmness. (36 words)
After reading the story, I was inspired by what the elephant said. The ability to focus your attention is
the key to your success in doing anything. Just like the fly, a person who is easily distracted by the
surroundings will feel restless and tired, unable to achieve his success.
This reminds me of what happened when I entered high school as a Senior One student. I was so excite
d to find that there were various student organizations and after-class activities intended for us students.
It seemed that many groups were suitable to me. During the first term, I was attracted whenever there
was a notice from a student group and I was eager to find out more about it. As a result, I didn’t spend
enough time on my studies, nor could I settle down on my homework every day. Consequently, I failed
in an important exam. ks5u
I have learned a lesson from this experience that one should focus on one thing at a time before he can
get it well done. To do so, we should put what we are doing in the first place and keep it up without
being interfered by other events. Only when we have a clear and determined mind can we accomplish
something in the end.

Halloween(萬圣節(jié)) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries. It
has now lost its religious connections and is celebrated largely as a children’s day in the United
States.
In recent years, on this day, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire
their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candy, fruit or
cookies. They say, "Trick or Treat", meaning, “I will play a trick on you if you will not give me a
treat.”
More recently, this practice has even developed into a significant international activity. Instead
of candy, the children collect money for UNICEF (聯(lián)合國國際兒童緊急救援基金). This special
collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as “UNICEF Trick
or Treat”. Begun only recently, it results in several million dollars each year contributed to UNICEF.
The collection box is orange, reminiscent(引人聯(lián)想的)of the pumpkin.

I have a friend Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧馬場) in San Ysidro. When he
was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

receive an F?"
The teacher said, "This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money.
You come from an itinerant(四處奔波的)family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch
requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding
stock and later you'll have to pay large stud (種馬) fees. There's no way you could ever do it."
He stated, "You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."
The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same school teacher brought 30 kids
to camp out on Monty's ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, "Look, Monty,
I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During

任務寫作。
閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150字左右的英語短文。
The southwest of Australia has been named as one of 25 "hot spots" for future species extinction because
of global warming. A new study says global warming will become a top cause of extinction across the world,
with thousands of species of plants and animals likely to be wiped out in the coming decades.
According to the study, global warming ranks among the most serious threats to the planet's biodiversity
and, under some conditions, may be more than that due to deforestation, this study provides even stronger
scientific evidence that global warming will result in catastrophic species losses across the planet. Last month,
a U.N. study said humans were responsible for the worst extinction and urged extra efforts to reach a U.N.
target of slowing the rate of losses by 2010.
Scientists disagree about how far global warming is to blame compared with other human threats such as
deforestation, pollution and the introduction of some species to new habitats. But the new study looks at the
25 "hot spots"-areas that contain a big concentration of plants and animals - and predicts that 11.6 percent of
all species, with a range from 1 to 43 percent, could be driven to extinction if levels of heat trapping gases in
the atmosphere were to keep rising in the next 100 years.
     寫作內容 1. 概括短文的內容要點,該部分的詞數(shù)大約為30字;
                     2. 以“Globe Warming Threatening Our Planet”為題,談談全球變暖對環(huán)境的影響。
                            至少包含以下內容要點,該部分詞數(shù)大約為120。
                     A. 全球變暖的主要原因;
                     B. 全球變暖的危害;
                     C. 談談如何解決該問題。
