They believe it could help find a cure for worse mental conditions like Parkinson's disease.Professor Michael Coleman is leading the research program.He explained,"We are aiming to be able to study the human brain at the most basic level,using an actual living human cell system.Cells have to be alive and operating efficiently to enable us to really understand how the brain works."The experiment involves changing cells from a cancer tumor (腫瘤)and making them behave like brain cells.

19.Students and Technology in the Classroom
I love my Black berry-it's my little connection to the large world that can go anywhere with me.I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts.Despite this love of technology,I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(設備) and truly communicate with others.
On occasion,I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas.Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom,I have a rule-no laptops,iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume(假設) that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology.There's no truth in that all.I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas.Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas.I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas.I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change,I'm sticking to my plan.A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

30.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom mayA.
A.encourage students to have in-depth conversations
B.keep students from doing independent thinking
C.help students to better understand complex themes
D.affect students'concentration on course evaluation
31.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the authorD.
A.will give up teaching history
B.is quite stubborn
C.will change his teaching plan soon
D.values technology-free dialogues in his class.

3.What will power your house in the future?Nuclear,wind,or solar power?According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US,it might be leaves-but artificial (人造的) ones.
Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy.It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process.
The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化劑).Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water.The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell,which uses those two materials to produce electricity,located either on top of a house or beside the house.
Though the leaf is only about the shape f a poker card,scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries."One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,"said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society.
The artificial leaf is not a new idea.The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997but was too expensive and unstable for practical use.The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials,easy to use and highly stable.In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45hours without a drop in activity.
The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful,new and inexpensive catalysts.These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight.Right now,the new leaf is about 10times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one.Besides,the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water.This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water.
With the goal to"make each home its own power station"and"give energy to the poor",scientists believe tha the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

33.Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce eletricity?A
a.artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen
b.the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell
cthe artificial leaves are put in water
d.the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity
A.c,a,b,d        B.c,b,a,d
C.b,c,a,d          D.c,a,d,b
34.The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is toB.
A.build up more power stations in the world
B.provide cheaper energy for developing countries
C.offer people in developing countries access to pure water
D.gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process
35.The main idea of this passage isD.
A.an introduction to the history of artificial leaves
B.a mixture of water power and solar energy
C.giving energy to the poor
D.an invention copying photosynthesis.

18.Most episodes(情況)of absent-mindedness-forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention,says Schacter."You're supposed to remember something,but you haven't encoded (譯成密碼)it deeply."
Encoding,Schacter explains,is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact(影響)on recalling it later.Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations.If you put your mobile phone in a pocket,for example,and don't pay attention to what you did because you're involved in a conversation,you'll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜)."Your memory itself isn't failing you,"says Schacter."Rather,you didn't give your memory system the information it needed."
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness."A man who can recite sports statistics from 30years ago,"says Zelinski,"may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox."Women have slightly better memories than men,possibly because they pay more attention to their environment,and memory depends on just that.
"Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness",says Schacter."But be sure the cue is clear and available,"he cautions.If you want to remember to take a medication(藥物)with lunch,put the pill bottle on the kitchen table-don't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another common episode of absent-mindedness:walking into a room and wondering why you're there.Most likely,you were thinking about something else."Everyone does this from time to time,"says Zelinski.The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room,and you'll likely remember.

B.helps us understand our memory system better
C.gets us to recall something from our memories
D.helps us to find out the mobile phone in the pocket
22.Why do women have better memories than men?C.
A.They seldom use their mobile phones.
B.They are more nervous about the environment.
C.They are more interested in what's happening around them.
