1.How words came into being is unknown. All we assume(推測)is that some early men invented certain sounds,in one way or another,to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things,so that they could talk with each other.Later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be put together to show those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the things they bring up to our minds.Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words bring back to us the happy and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is what  we call literary style(文體).Above all,the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly,or they will make our speech silly and common.

34. C  段落大意題.第二段首句"The power of words,then,lies in their associations-the things they bring up to our minds."
We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use then correctly,or they will make our speech silly and common."可知,作者鼓勵我們注意用詞的技巧.故選A.

5.Shortly after being hired as the Resource Coordinator at Wells High School,I set out to establish an area for students to participate in after-school programs.Within the first week of being hired,I began searching the building for a potentialspace but failed.It wasn't until the custodian(看門人)took me down to the basement of he building that I found what I was looking for.
My first impression of the basement room was that it looked like something from the sene of a Saw movie.The room was filled with old gardening equipment,along with many other random things.My secnd impression of the room was that it had tons of potential.During the first three weeks of August,about 15 students and I began working on it.By the end of August,the room had been cleared out,cleaned and painted.
The Graffiti-Mural Art Club was established as a result of all the hard work that went into fixing the bassment room.Because this room is on a separate floor from all of the other things going on in the building,students are able to use this room as their own personal studio.They do not have toworry about making too much noise or spilling paint.In this program,students are given the opportunity to design murals(壁畫) on the walls and students can learn about various steet art techniques.The fact that students are able to"tag"on a wall has served as an inducement for students who usually do not participate in extracurricular programs to join.
Now the Graffiti-Mural Art Club has allured many local street artists within the community.My hope is that this unique program continues to grow over the span of this year.More and more students can enjoy painting.

58.Why did the author and his students work on the basement room?(no more than 10 words)Students can use this room as their own personal studio.
59.What does the underlined work"allured"in the last paragraph mean?(1 word)Attracted
60.Do you think the Graffiti-Mural Art Club is of any use to the sdudents?Give your reasons(no more than 20 words)Yes,because students have the opportunity to design murals(壁畫)on the walls and can learn about various street art techniques.

16.Nervous suspects(嫌疑犯) in Britain's newest police station may feel a bit more relaxed by a pleasant yellow color on the door.If they are to confess a crime(坦白罪行),the blue one on the wall may help.
Gwent Police have given up colors such as grey and brown in the 20th-century police cells(牢房) and have used color psychology to decorate them.
Ystrad Mynach station has four cells with g lass doors for prisoners who suffer from the complete loneliness.Designers have painted the frames yellow, which researchers say is a calming color.Other cells have a royal blue line because the color can encourage truthfulness.
The station has 31 cells, including 12 with a"live scan"system for drunken prisoners, which watches the rise and fall of their chests. An alarm sounds if a prisoner's breathing stops and goes on ringing until the door is opened.
Designers and psychologists have worked for years on color. It is said that blue means trust, duty, coolness and calmness. It also means coldness and unfriendliness.Strong blues are believed to help people think clearly and lighter; softer colors will calm the mind.
Yellow is linked with self-respect and friendliness.Get the color wrong and it could cause fear, depression(壓抑) and worry, but the right yellow can lift spirits and self-respect.
Ingrid Collins, who has been doing the experiments about the effects of color, said color was an"energy force".She said,"Blue is of some help to communication but I'm not sure whether it is helpful to truthful communication."
Yellow works on the mind, she said.Red,on the other hand, should never be considered because it could increase aggression(攻擊).Mrs.Collins praised the designers for using colors in the cells.Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with color to calm down or make prisoners co-operate.In the 1990s,Strathclyde Police used pink in the cells after they studied the result of the research carried out by American scientists.
