In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were    . His chances of surviving were small.      when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much      than he was when he started, but alive.
His      of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he      to catch fish, how he evaporated (蒸發(fā)) sea water to       fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that        my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no       in continuing the struggle. He was starved and      worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people      these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in       desperate circumstances      in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on      difficulties.
“I tell myself I can      it,” wrote Callahan in his book. “Compared to what others have been through, I’m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over,      up courage…”
I wrote that down after I read it. It      me as something important. And I’ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed      off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I’ve said it, I have always come back to my      .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad      to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you       through the rough situations with a little more courage.

Davey wanted to play baseball. But fifty years ago, in his small town, he couldn’t find enough players for two full teams or an empty lot big enough for a field. And when he played ball in his back yard, he just broke windows and got into trouble. So Davey began playing with a plastic golf ball and a broom handle for a bat.
When his dad, David Mullaney, a former semi-pro baseball pitcher(投手), realized his son was hurting his arm trying to throw curves with the little plastic ball, he decided to find a better solution. Mullaney got a bunch of hollow plastic spheres from a local factory, sat down at his kitchen table and began cutting different size holes in the balls with a razor knife. He thought maybe the holes would alter the ball’s flight and help his son throw curves and sliders without hurting his arm.
All the balls failed—except the one with the eight oblong(長橢圓形的) holes cut into one of the hemispheres. This ball curved naturally and sharply without a violent snap of the wrist. In fact, Davey was now striking out so many batters; he called his new ball a “wiffle ball”. A year later, Mullaney borrowed $20,000 from family and friends and started producing Wiffle Balls in his little suburban town of Shelton, Connecticut.
“I didn’t want investors.” He said, “I wanted to control my own company.” This was the beginning of one of the hottest fads(時尚) of the fifties and a perennial(長久的) best seller well known all around the world. Since then millions of boys and girls have enjoyed countless hours of safe, wholesome fun playing with a Wiffle ball and bat. Esquire Magazine has even called the Wiffle Ball “a national treasure”. By producing a high quality product at an affordable price, three generations of Mullany’s have enjoyed the satisfaction and benefits of running a successful and profitable family business.
Over the years, they’ve had plenty of offers to buy them out, but they’re still working out of a small factory in Shelton, making a new Wiffle Ball every couple of seconds. Creativity and persistence are two of the important sources for wealth. If he gave up his attempts at trying new things, Mullany would not have invented the wiffle ball, nor would he have made such a big fortune.

Alexi s Vaughan,17,sat tiredly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car.The early Saturday morning run with her father,Michael, was part of the punishment. She stared sadly out of the window at the cornfields.
An experienced hunter,Alexis let her eyes lazily search for wildlife. She was shocked when a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them.Mule deer never appeared in plain sight ten days before hunting season. It was a buck—a male deer with sharp,three-pronged antlers(三齒鹿角).
Suddenly Alexis heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. She realized the buck was attacking a woman.Sue Panter had been Out for her morning run.The deer had appeared from the tall corn and begun following her.Having lived in the countryside of Idaho for years,Sue knew that most deer got frightened by humans. But this deer moved closer, even when she threw a handful of small stones at it.
“I knew I was in trouble,”she says.
The buck rushed forward, lifted her up with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel the antlers made small holes in her leg and blood ran down her leg.
When the Vaughans pulled up,the buck was throwing Sue like a rag doll. Before her father had stopped the car,Alexis rushed out of the car and down the slope(斜坡)toward the buck.“1 was kicking and hitting it hard with my fists to get its attention so that It will leave the woman,”she says. However, the animal was not frightened at all. Then Michael pushed the buck away from the woman by the antlers.
Alexis helped Sue up the slope and into the Vaughans’car. Then she tied a tourniquet(止血帶)to Sue's right leg.Her neck was cut. Then she heard her father shout loudly. Michael had been knocked to the ground, his right leg seriously cut by the buck. Alexis took a hammer from the car and ran to where Michael lay on his back in the dirt. She beat the buck’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t frighten it away.“I was losing faith,”she says.
“A couple more strikes,Alexis,”said Michael.“You can do it.”Alexis closed her eyes and hit with all her strength at the deer’s neck with the hammer. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away.
A1exis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the hospital in Franklin, hearing her dad’s breathing grow difficuIt and unsmooth as the blood from his wounded leg had flowed through the T—shirt he'd wrapped around it.In the backseat,Sue looked unconscious.
After doctors treated Sue and Michael,Sue tearfully thanked her rescuers.“ You expect aTeenage girl to get on the phone and call for help in such a situation, not to beat up a deershe says

Imagine someone has crossed the seas joining five continents by swimming. It is a major success for anyone. But it is an even greater success for Philippe Croizon, who has no arms, and no legs! His achievements show that we can all achieve great things—no matter who we are.
Philippe Croizon was 26 years old when he had an accident. The doctors had to remove both of his arms and legs. “When they cut off my last leg I wanted to die. I suffered great depression and my spirit was as low as you can get. But you have to choose—and I chose to live!” said Croizon.
While he was recovering in hospital, Croizon saw a television programme about a woman who had been swimming across the English Channel. After watching the programme Croizon decided to do it. He began to exercise every day to make him strong and it took him two years to prepare.
Finally in 2010, Croizon was ready. He entered the cold, grey sea of the English Channel. He was now 42 years old. It took him from early morning until night to swim the distance. He felt a lot of pain. But he had become the first person without arms and legs to swim between France and England. Croizon had achieved his dream, but he did not stop there. He looked for a new goal.
Early in 2012 he planned to swim across the seas that join five major continents. During the next few months he swam between the four continents of Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe and finally in the cold waters of the Bering Strait between the continents of Asia and the Americas.
“We want to show people something. If disabled people have courage and a lot of training they can do the same things as those who are not disabled,” said Croizon.
