6.We Chinese are not big huggers.A handshake or a pat on the shoulder is enough to convey our friendship or affection to one another.So when our newly-acquainted Western friends reach out to give us a hug,some of us feel awkward.Many questions go through our head.Where should I put my arms?What distance should I maintain?Should our chests touch?
But it isn't just people from cultures that are conservative in expressing physical contact who find hugging confusing.Hugs can cause discomfort or even distress in people who value their personal space.
In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal,US psychologist Peggy Drexler said that although the US remains a"medium touch"culture,Americans do seem to be hugging more. From politicians to celebrities, hugs are given to friends, strangers and enemies alike, whether they are willing or not;and the public has been quick to pick up the practice.
Public figures know that nothing expresses fellowship or affection like a good hug.US First Lady Michelle Obama has put her arms around icy foreign leaders like Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Queen of England.Pop superstar Lady Gaga is also a hug enthusiast,telling her fans that"I will always,always,try my very best to wrap my arms around you when I meet you."
But not all are grateful to be hugged,even by the most influential and famous.To them,any hug is offensive if it's not sincere.Amanda Hess,writing for US magazine Slate,says public figures should stop imposing hugs on everyone they meet.For them,a hug is rarely a gesture of sincere fellowship,or affection.It's all part of a show.

28.Chinese people don't enjoy hugs becauseA.
A.they are conservative in physical touch
B.they don't know how to hug correctly
C.they think a handshake is the best way to convey friendship

A.People are grateful to hugs of any kind    B.A hug is a gesture of friendship.
C.A famous person's hug is usually sincere  D.An insincere hug is a part of show.

17.In our culture,the sources of what we call a sense of"mastery"-feeling important and worthwhile-and the sources of what we call a sense of"pleasure"-finding life enjoyable-are not always the same.Women often are told"You can't have it all."Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is:"You choose a career,so you can't expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life."or"You have a wonderful husband and children-what's all this about wanting a career?"But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being,if they are to feel good about themselves.
Our study shows that,for women,well-being(康樂) has two aspects.One is mastery,which includes self-respect,a sense of control over your life,and low levels of anxiety and depression.Mastery is closely related to the"doing"side of life,to work and activity.Pleasure is the other aspect,and it is made up of happiness,satisfaction and optimism.It is tied more closely to the"feeling"side of life.The two are independent of each other.A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure,and vice versa (反之亦然).For example,a woman who has a good job,but whose mother has just died,might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life,but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.
The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women,and correct past mistakes.In the past,women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being.But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important.And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work.In our study,all the groups of employed women are valued significantly higher in mastery than women who are not employed.
A woman's well-being is developed when she takes on multiple (多項的) roles.At least?by middle adulthood,the women who are involved in a combination of roles-marriages,motherhood,and employment-are the highest in well-being,in spite of warnings about stress and strain.

64.It can be inferred from the first paragraph thatD.
A.for women,a sense of"mastery"is more important than a sense of"pleasure"
B.for women,a sense of"pleasure"is more important than a sense of"mastery"
C.women can't have a sense of"mastery"and a sense of"pleasure"at the same time
D.a(chǎn) sense of"mastery"and a sense of"pleasure"are both necessary to women
65.The author's attitude towards women having a career is_B.
A.negative       B.positive        C.neutral (中立)  D.realistic
66.One can conclude from the passage that if a woman takes on several social roles,_A.
A.her life will be richer and more meaningful
B.she will be more successful in her career
C.her chances of getting promoted will be greater
D.it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strain
67.The most appropriate title for the passage would be _C.
A.The Well-Being of Career Women
B.Sources of Mastery and Pleasure
C.Two Aspects of Women's Well-Being

14.Sometimes people call each other"scared cat",but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood-stream.If the danger continues, this animal will do one of the two things. It will defend itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared,or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger and regretted later?Have you ever shouted at a teacher or told somebody you were lonely and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut?It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's always smarter to hide our feelings? No!If you keep feelings like anger hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illnesses can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside.Itcan actually be bad for your health.Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you'd see little fruit flies hovering(盤旋) all over them. They'd be rotten. You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

16.Young American adults own smartphones at a higher rate than any other age group.Researchers from Duke University wanted to see if using the smartphone with a low-cost weight-loss App might help young adults in the US who are overweight.
If you're rooting for smartphones to solve all our health problems,you're not going to like what the researchers found.The smartphone App doesn't help young adults lose any weight.
The study looked at 365young adults aged 18to 35.A third of the young adults used an Android App created for the study,which not only tracked their calories,weight and exercise but also offered interactive features like goal setting,games and social support.Another third of the young adults received six weekly personal coaching courses,followed by monthly phone follow-ups.Plus,this personal coaching group was also encouraged to track their weight,calories and exercise by smartphones.The last third of young adults were put into a control group and given three necessities on healthy eating and exercise-nothing else.
Researchers tracked the young adults'progress after six months,one year and two years.The personal coaching group lost more weight than the other two groups at the six-month mark,but that lead(領(lǐng)先) disappeared at the one-and two-year follow-up.As for the group using the smartphone App,their average weight loss was never more than the other two groups.
Lead author Laura Svetkey says that she and her colleagues were both surprised and disappointed at the results."Given the power of cell phone apps and the popularity of these health and fitness apps,we thought this might be good to provide an effective solution at a low cost,"says Svetkey.
But Svetkey says it's difficult to get the same level of intensity(強(qiáng)度)in an App that you might get through personal coaching.Plus,she says,people tend to stop using weight-loss apps after a while.
There are good reasons to help young adults control their weight.Weight gain during the young adult years is associated with a variety of health problems later in life,including metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
Since I am a young American adult who uses a popular weight-loss App on my iPhone,I wonder if there is any real harm in using one of these apps,even if they aren't proven effective in research studies.So I turn to Svetkey.She says,"These study results aren't the reason to give up hope about the potential for weight-loss apps,but instead are the reason to strengthen research efforts.More work is needed to understand how to use the technology and show its strengths in a way that will lead people to change their eating and exercise behaviors."

62.The underlined part"rooting for"in Paragraph 2is closest in meaning to"A".
A.supporting.disliking   C.quitting    D.doubting
63.From the passage we know that in the studyD.
A.the group using the smartphone App lost the most weight

C.a(chǎn)ll participants surveyed gains weight two years later
D.the personal coaching group was more successful at the six-month mark
64.Which of the following does Laura Svetkey agree with?B
A.Weight-loss apps in smartphones are an effective solution to over-weight people.
B.Compared with weight-loss apps,personal coaching is more effective.
C.Being overweight will cause serious diseases to people.
D.People should have confidence in weight-loss apps all the time.
65.From the last paragraph,we can infer thatC.
A.people are advised to give up using weight-loss apps
B.people should eat less and exercise more
C.there is a long way to go to help people lose weight with technology
