13.From the health point of view we are living in an amazing age.We are free from  many of the most dangerous diseases.A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads.Man vs the motor-car.It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel(方向盤),his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel.They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-years-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles so gentlly on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior.Everything is done for his convenience.Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year,to be easily forgotten.
It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax(不嚴(yán)格) and even the strictest are not strict enough.A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardlized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year.Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person's driving ability.Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads.Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories,as has been done in the USA.All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all,the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.

4.The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment.Those findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.
David Tilman is a professor at the University of Minnesota.In the study,he examined information from 100nations to show what people ate and how diet affected health.Mr.Tilman noted a movement beginning in the 1960s.He found that as nations industrialized(工業(yè)化),population increased and earnings rose.More people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.The Western diet is high in sugar,fat,oil and meat.By eating these foods,people began to get fatter and sicker.
"The food,let us say,in the 15 richest nations of the world,right now contains about 400or 500extra calories(熱量) a day that are eaten beyond what people need,and that leads people to gain weight."
David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for diseases like diabetes,heart disease and some cancers.Diabetes is shooting to very high rates in the United States and across Europe.Heart disease is a major cause of death in the Western nations.Unfortunately when people become industrialized,if they adopt this Western diet,they are going to have these same health problems.
A diet bad for human beings,it seems,is also bad for the environment.As the world's population grows,experts say more forests and areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for raising cattle.These areas will be needed to meet the increasing demand for food.
Mr.Tilman calls the link between diet,the environment and human health,"a dilemma",a situation where it is very difficult to decide what to do.He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

53.Why did people get fatter in the 1960s?A.
A.They ate foods high in calories.
B.They adopted a western lifestyle.
C.They set aside little time for exercise.
D.They had a better life and became lazier.
54.According to the text,overweight people may suffer the following diseases EXCEPTB.
A.diabetes
B.skin disease
C.cancers
D.heart disease
55.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?B.
A.To tell people effective ways to keep healthy.
B.To call on people to give up the Western diet.
C.To show the problems industrialized nations are facing.
D.To draw people's attention to environmental protection.

2.New research has shown that you might not just be feeling blue, you may also be seeing it differently.A blue mood may be more than just a figure of speech.Your mood may also affect how you see the world around you, according to a new study.A team of researchers has demonstrated that sadness could have an effect on the way we see colors.
The team, led by psychology researcher Christopher Thorstenson of the University of Rochester, found that people in whom they had induced a sad mood were less accurate in identifying colors on the blue-yellow axis(軸線),compared to people who weren't feeling sad.
"We were already deeply familiar with how often people use color terms to describe common phenomena, like mood.even when these concepts seem unrelated,"Thorstenson said in a statement."We thought that maybe a reason these metaphors emerge was because there really was a connection between mood and identifying colors in a different way."
Thorstenson and his team are not the first to identify a link between a depressed mood and a difference in recognition. In 2010,Emanuel Bubl and his team at Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg in Germany first demonstrated a link between decreased contrast sensitivity and depression. This was supported by a 2013 paper by Johnson Faro et al of the University of Singapore.
The team conducted two studies. In the first,127 participants were chosen randomly to watch one of two video clips, which had been proved in previous studies to feel either sadness (a cartoon clip) or amusement (a stand-up comedy routine). They didn't do that in a specific order.
The entire group was then tasked with identifying the colors in 48 continued color swatches. The group that had been shown the cartoon clip was measurably worse at identifying colors along the blue-yellow axis, although no difference was found along the red-green axis.
For the second study,130 participants were randomly assigned to watch either a sad clip or a neutral one.The sadness group showed reduced ability to identify colors along the blue-yellow axis than the neutral group.Again, there was no difference along the red-green axis.
Because of this lack of difference along the red-green axis, the researchers say the difference in ability cannot be explained by lack of effort,or focus. If the subjects were badly focused, they would have performed equally badly along both color axes.
