Twenty years ago, Mark Thatcher, the son of Mrs. Thatcher, was reported missing in the Sahara Desert while competing in the Grand Prix Motor race from Paris to Daker. She said that all the countries concerned had    to do their best to help her find her son. With that she    down completely and sobbed silently for quite a while. People began to talk about the Iron Woman’s     love, a    that is common to all human race.
Later Mark returned    to his mother’s side, good-humored and all smiles as usual   nothing unusual had ever happened. The Iron Woman,      , broke down again and was     sobbing for a second time.

Some years ago when I was in my first year in college, I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome’s       filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so       that I decided to write an article about her.
I       Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career .She       and told me to come to her Studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of mind. I       I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn’t even written a grocery list.
I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there      , taking notes and asking questions that all began with, “Can you tell me…?” I soon realized that       Salome Bey was one thing, but writing a story for a national magazine was just impossible. The       was almost unbearable. I struggled for days       draft(草稿)after draft. Finally I put my manuscript(手稿)into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.
It didn’t take long. My manuscript      . How stupid of me! I thought. How could I
in a world of professional writers? Knowing I couldn’t       the rejection letter, I threw the unopened envelope into a drawer.
Five years later, I was moving to California. While       my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor’s letter in      :
Ms Profit,
Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some       materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to       your story soon.
Shocked, it took me a long time to      . Fear of rejection cost me greatly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and the chance of having my article appear in a major magazine. More importantly, I lost years of       writing. Today, I have become a full-time writer. Looking back on this      , I learned a very important lesson: You can’t       to doubt yourself.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were    . His chances of surviving were small.      when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much      than he was when he started, but alive.
His      of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he      to catch fish, how he evaporated (蒸發(fā)) sea water to       fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that        my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no       in continuing the struggle. He was starved and      worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people      these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in       desperate circumstances      in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on      difficulties.
“I tell myself I can      it,” wrote Callahan in his book. “Compared to what others have been through, I’m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over,      up courage…”
I wrote that down after I read it. It      me as something important. And I’ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed      off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I’ve said it, I have always come back to my      .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad      to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you       through the rough situations with a little more courage.

This was our time, our senior year. My best friend Beth and I had big dreams…But in my world of “big dreams” this one small       freshman did not appear on my radar(關(guān)注范圍). My best friend Beth was the first to       her.
“Kristi, did you see the girl standing by us in the lunch line --- she looks so      ,so out of place.” We had heard of a family that had just       to our town from the country of Cambodia. We knew there was supposed to be a       girl at our school from that family, but we had yet to meet her until now.
Leourn was a small dark-haired beauty. She       with the little English she knew and that made it very       for her to get to know people in our small town.Every day Leourn kept her eyes fixed on the       and we never, ever saw her      .
What could we do to help Leourn? With       and faith,we decided to let her know that there were people who      . We sought out Leourn in the halls and said “ Hi ” and tried to continue to engage her in      . Leourn responded to us with smiles and small talk.
When Valentine’s Day(情人節(jié)) came,I       thought of Leourn and decided I would send her a      for the holiday. Thinking that she was       learning our language and customs,I simply wrote, “Happy Valentine’s Day,Leourn. Your friend Kristi.”
I will       forget that Valentine’s Day.
For the       time,Leourn was the one who       me out. She found me in the hall with the carnation(康乃馨)in her hands. Then she did something       .She actually took her eyes off the floor, looked up at me with beautiful eyes and in a       whisper said two words: “Thank You.”
It was a life-changing moment for me.

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss,or an insensitive employee      your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed       the airport. We were driving in the    lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his      ,slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and     the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started       at us.
My taxi driver just      and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really      . So I asked,"Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of      , full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage       up,they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on     .Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be      .Don’t take their garbage and      it to other people at work,at home,or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with     .The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s     in your life. Roy Baumeister,a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you      bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you      them more frequently.
So…Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you       it!
When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by     go of the bad. Have a Garbage-Free Day!Have a marvelous,garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today       the harvest you reap tomorrow.
