12.Canadian scientists have found a method to help aging people get less forgetful by improving their cognitive(認(rèn)知)abilities through well-designed training.Everyone experiences some degree of memory loss and cognitive decline as they get older. The decline usually becomes noticeable after 50,when people may find it slightly more difficult to focus on tasks, organize everyday jobs and remember how to do things in the right order.
A team of psychologists in Toronto created a strategy of cognitive training to help people preserve these abilities."Our primary emphasis was on improving the use of general strategic abilities because they are particularly weak to the aging process,"Dr.Donald Stuss, director of the study, said in a press release. The team examined 49 healthy older adults with normal cognitive decline. All of the participants were between the ages of 71 and 87.Over the course of 12 weeks, psychologists taught them methods to improve their strategic abilities.Afterwards, researchers saw a 15 to 40 percent improvement in the memories of all participants."Over a period of six months their improvement not only maintained, but increased,"said Dr.Gordon Winocur, coordinator of the study. The 12-week course was broken up into three four-week sections, focusing on a different skill involved in strategic abilities:memory, goal management and psychosocial function.
The memory training emphasized how to preserve and recover information, while goal management focused on methods to lower the chance of memory slips.Psychosocial training was aimed at increasing the participants'confidence in their mental abilities.
"We wanted to develop a cognitive training program that would produce improvement over a relatively short period of time,so participants could benefit more on that while they're still functional and slow down the rate of decline,"said Winocur."If we can work with people in the early stages of cognitive decline, then we can slow down the rate of this decline and help them maintain a higher level of function for a longer period of time."

7.Eight-year-old Owen Howkins suffers from growth delays(遲緩) and poor eyesight.This means that Owen needs a wheelchair to get around.Not surprisingly,he felt people were staring (盯著看) at him,and that made him very uncomfortable,so he became lonely and even stopped going outside of his house.That,however,was all before Haatchi came into his life!
Haatchi had a very unlucky start to life too.Tied to a railway track when he was just five months old,the dog was hit by a train.The hit unjured his tail and a leg so badly that both had to be cut off.Taken to a rescue shelter(救助站),the dog would have probably been killed if his story posted on Facebook had not been seen by Owen's dad Will.He fell in love with Haatchi and decided to keep him,thinking that they were helping him.It turns out that it was Haatchi who helped them.By always staying at young Owen's side,he became the boy's best friend.Slowly Owen liked to go outside.Wherever he goes,the dog follows and protects him.Owen now proudly walks around the neighborhood,showing off his dog and telling anyone willing to listen,Haatchi's story.

17.A.A careful analysis biologically
B.What's globle warming?
C.Solution to the terrifying result
D.Greater danger of extinction
E.Many shocking things found  F.A shocking report

76.B
The earth is getting warmer.People burn coal,oil and gas and this produces carbon dioxide,methane and nitrous oxide.These gases,called"greenhouse gases",prevent the heat of the sun from leaving the earth's upper atmosphere and this makes the earth warmer.
77.F
A few weeks ago a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world.They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals.According to what they found,the scientists say that during the next 50years about 25% of land animals and plants will become extinct.More than a million plant and animal species will be extinct by 2050.
78.C
More than 10% of all plants and animals will become extinct.It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere.But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now,we could save many more plants and animals from extinction.
79.A
The scientists studied some regions of the world with a very rich biology. These regions were Europe,Australia,Central and South America, and South Africa.Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill,to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move a very long distance to get cooler,so they are in greater danger of extinction.
80.E
The scientists found that half of the 24 species of butterflies they studied in Australia would soon become extinct.60% of the species in the Kruger National Park in South Africa would also die out,and more than 100% of the 300 South Africa plant species they studied would also become extinct.One of the plants in danger of extinction is the national flower of South Africa,the King Protea.They studied 163 tree species in the Cerrado region of Brazil and found that 70 would become extinct.Many of the plants and trees that live in this region live nowhere else in the world.In Mexico,they studied 1,870 species and found that more than 30% of these were in danger of extinction.

Why does a woman have the last (and longest) laugh? The answer is that women enjoy a joke more once they get it.If you tell a woman a joke and get a blank look,don't(41)Cdespair.She's just taking her time to understand it.But if the punchline(妙語(yǔ))does eventually make her laugh it will be(42)Ethe wait.
Scientists have found that while women are slower than men at getting jokes, they enjoy them more when they truly understand.Research shows that women use their brain more than men to process witty(43)Fand have less expectation that they will be funny.
When a joke does hit the right(44)J,however,women derive more pleasure from it.Scientists asked ten men and ten women to look at dozens of black and white cartoons and rate them on a"funniness scale".During the process they underwent sophisticated scans that mapped which parts of their brain were lighting up and timed how long it took them to(45)I to a joke. The women tended to use(46)D parts of their brain.Professor Allan Reiss said:"We found greater activity in the parts of their brain in women, showing women are processing stimuli that(47)Alanguage areas of the brain."
