【題目】What it does

The self-cleaning door handle is combining with advanced photocatalytic ( ) and blacklight technology. A light source activates the door’s handle coating, telling it to start cleaning. It can minimize the risk of infection by contact and improve the cleanliness of a space.

How it works

The working principle of the product is that a thin advanced photocatalytic coating can effectively decompose bacteria ( 細(xì) ) on the surface of a substance. A consistent UV light source—inside a transparent glass door handle—is required to activate the door’s handle coating on the outer surface for disinfection, so a generator is used to provide electricity to light up a UV LED lamp by the motion of an opening and closing door. Then, the door handle can clean by itself.

Design process

We made the first version by using stainless steel. However, it caused the door handle to be heavier. Then, we tried aluminum, which made it light and easy to fix. We also improved the generator output which effectively turned energy from door movement into a light source.

How it is different

Our innovative design is simple, effective, and attractive. It has an elegant smooth shape, and its minimalist appearance stands out in today’s world of inventions. Nowadays, people use chemical cleaning materials to clean up public areas but it harms the human body. Our design can be used for a long time and is effective. It can self-clean after each use. In the door lock and door handle market, it is a unique design because there are no similar products.

Future plans

In the future, we will commercialize the product and hope that it can compete on the market with similar products. We are going to connect with public properties, for example, shopping malls, hotels, hospitals and public restrooms, where the risk of spreading infection is higher.

Awards

In addition to winning the James Dyson Award, it has also received the Gold Award, and in 2016, it was featured in the 44th International Geneva Inventions Exhibition.

1How does the self-cleaning door handle function?

A.It controls the door movement automatically.

B.It minimizes the risk of infection by less contact.

C.Chemical cleaning materials are used to clean it up.

D.The light source tells the door handle coating to clean itself.

2Compared with the first version of the product, the present one is ______.

A.safer and cheaperB.cleaner and easier

C.less heavy and more effectiveD.more attractive and expensive

3What do we know about the new invention according to the passage?

A.It has been widely used in public areas.

B.It has received recognition for its innovation.

C.It is quite competitive among similar products.

D.It will replace traditional chemical cleaning materials.

【題目】閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。續(xù)寫的詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右。

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.

An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

“Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warming. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅)the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

Steve and Zach hadn`t gone far when there was a familiar bark.

Brady pulled again, in spite of the boy's disbelief, urgently.

Two years ago, my class went on a five-day school trip in Paris! There was thirty of us and four teachers. We both went in one big and comfort coach. We watched a video and listened some CDs on the journey. It takes us only three hours to reach Paris. The hotel was very old, and the rooms were nice and the beds were great! When we went shopping, I tried to practise the French. We visited art galleries and I took lots of photo. The river trip was which I enjoyed most. Leave Paris made me sad as I had a lovely time there.

【題目】 Mercury(水星) is the closest planet to the sun. It is a planet slightly larger than the Earth’s moon. It is covered in craters. Some craters have ice in them, even though the planet is hot. Sunlight never touches some parts because of the planet’s special position. Without air, there are great temperature differences between the coldest and hottest parts. Mercury days are so long that there are big differences between temperatures on the daylight side and the night side.

Mercury was created billions of years ago, when big rocks ran into each other. After these accidents, the planet was frequently visited by meteorites (流星) for several hundred million years. There were also many volcanic eruptions. As the planet cooled, the thin, rocky outside shell reduced in diameter(直徑) by about 3 kilometers.

The Caloris Basin is one of the largest craters on Mercury. This big crater is 1, 300 kilometers wide and was formed when a large rock, about 100 kilometers across, knocked into the surface. Beethoven, another large crater, is 643 kilometers across.

The cliffs on Mercury are up to 2 kilometers high and hundreds of kilometers long. The cliffs were formed when the thin surface fell apart, as volcanic activity slowed down and Mercury became cooler.

One Mercury day lasts about 59 Earth days. Mercury takes about 88 Earth days to have a complete year, instead of the 365 days that we have on the Earth. Mercury speeds around the sun so that there are three Mercury days every two Mercury years! Mercury has a strange relationship with the Earth. Every 117 days, when Mercury is closest to the Earth, it always has the same side facing us.

Mariner 10 is the only spacecraft to visit Mercury. It made three visits to Mercury in, the 1970s, taking photos of many cliffs and craters. Although the first three visits answered many questions, they have raised others.

1What is the surface of Mercury like?

A.It’s generally flat.B.It’s hot everywhere.

C.It’s bright everywhere.D.It’s cold in some parts.

2Why did Mercury’s diameter get smaller?

A.A drop in temperature changed its size.

B.A great many meteorites ran into it.

C.It got out of shape as time passed.

D.Lots of surface rocks fell off.

3What do we know about Mercury?

A.One Mercury day lasts about 88 Earth days.

B.It turns around the sun faster than the Earth.

C.Six Mercury days are two Mercury years.

D.It has more cliffs than large craters.

4What happened after Mariner 10’s three visits to Mercury?

A.Another spacecraft visited Mercury.

B.New cliffs and craters were formed.

C.New signs of volcanic activity appeared.

D.Lots of new puzzles needed to be solved.
