Inside the Rain Room

The Rain Room has arrived and local art lovers are taking notice. Is it worth the wait? Yes, I assure you it is. Once inside, visitors find a long, dark room with a high ceiling. A single bright light shines through heavy rain falling around visitors. The mist. The damp air. The noise. It feels like a mighty storm is pouring down. But the storm is inside. And visitors aren’t getting wet. Instead, visitors wander in awe, admiring the rain and the artists who created it.

The Rain Room was created to highlight the connection between humans, nature and technology. With a tracking system that senses movement and stops the rain wherever visitors move, it does just that. Light and sound produce an experience that feels both natural and foreign. The exhibit is moving on to Atlanta next month. I urge you to visit before then. It’s time to experience the Rain Room for yourself!

Welcome to the Rain Room

• The Rain Room features falling water. Please be aware you may get slightly wet. However, visitors wearing raincoats will be turned away.

• This exhibit features advanced technology. To ensure its effectiveness, please avoid wearing dark or reflective clothing.

• Visitors are welcome to take photographs of the exhibit.

• Children must be accompanied by an adult.

• For the convenience of all guests, visits are limited to 10 minutes.

1.What’s the purpose of the text?

A. To attract visitors to a new art exhibit.

B. To explain how an exhibit has been created.

C. To describe the technology used in the exhibit.

D. To promote the artists taking part in an exhibit.

2.What’s the function of the exhibit’s tracking system?

A. To keep visitors from getting wet.

B. To protect the exhibit from water damage.

C. To time how long visitors are in the room.

D. To count the number of visitors in the room.

3.What must you do when visiting the Rain Room?

A. Wear a raincoat.

B. Wear dark clothing.

C. Leave your camera outside.

D. Pass through within 10 minutes.

Nowadays many people drive instead of taking a bus or walking to work. It causes more traffic jam: and accidents. As the student, what can we do to guarantee our safe? First of all, the traffic rules must be strict obeyed. When we cross streets, wait until the traffic light turn green. Next, don't forget walk on the pavement. Finally, I think it very dangerously to wear headphones while walking or cycling. Since we can't pay enough attention on the traffic around us, so accidents may happen. Lindha was a student at Kansas State University. She is here to tell us about her time in Kansas in the city of Manhattan.

What were the best things about it?

Manhattan has a great university feel to it. I loved going to the football games. We would spend the whole day tailgating (開車尾派對) outside the stadium, drinking beer and having a big barbecue.

What do you think of the people there?

People from Kansas are so friendly. However, I'd say that many Kansans are very sheltered and don't pay much attention to life outside the US. But as the grandma of my Kansan friend might say, “We're still sweet as pie.”

What were the worst things about being there?

It's very difficult to get around Kansas without a car. Everything's so spread out and there isn't really a public transportation system.

What was the funniest thing that happened while you were there?

I remember one trip I took with my friend to her grandparents' house. They had horses and asked me if I wanted to go for a ride. I had never ridden a horse before but I decided to have a try. I hopped (跳上) on and everything was fine for a minute. But then the horse went crazy. It started bucking (猛然彎背躍起) and making these crazy noises. I thought I was going to die. My friend eventually calmed the horse down but not before I had destroyed an entire section of the fence. I thought they would be mad but they were just in shock — they couldn't believe I had stayed on the horse for that long.

Did you have any other problems?

I'm Swedish, but my English is pretty good because my dad's English. But it took a little while to get used to the accent. The people from the cities don't have a strong accent, but the people from the country are hard to understand sometimes. You also have to be careful with the weather. In the winter it was absolutely freezing, and during the summer it was so hot I thought I might die. Of course, they have heating and air conditioning everywhere.

1.What's Lindha's impression about people in Kansas?

A. They are kind but unhappy.

B. They are nice but isolated.

C. They are patient and amusing.

D. They are honest and generous.

2.What do we know about Lindha's horse riding experience?

A. She fell off the horse's back.

B. She finally got the horse under control.

C. She was brave but destroyed part of a fence.

D. She had a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

3.We learn from the text that Lindha _____.

A. doesn't like the weather in Kansas

B. speaks English with a Swedish accent

C. speaks highly of the transportation system in Kansas

D. doesn't like the school life in Kansas State University
