【題目】Americans, especially the millennials(千禧一代), are always glued(固著于)to their phones. A common day of the average university student in America starts off like this: an alarm clock wakes you up, which is quickly followed by checking social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Once in classes, you are again attracted by your buzzing phone and access to the Internet rather than pay attention to the lecturing professor. Then you have lunch with some friends, only to look up from your screen to realize that no one has said a word in five minutes and instead all are looking at their phones. Once the day ends, you can’t help checking all forms of social media again before finally being able to shut your eyes only to repeat this vicious cycle the next day.

Cyberbullying(網(wǎng)絡(luò)霸凌), a concept unknown before, is now in fashion. Many of the millennials are using the Internet to make jokes about others to points of extremes. The Internet gives cowards bravery; people feel like their actions and words have no bad results because they cannot see the ache it causes another.

Millennials also think that whatever information shows up on their screens must be taken as truth, whether the material is reliable(可靠的)or not.

Social media is not all bad, however. People are still able to use social media to connect with friends and family who live a great distance away. With a few clicks of a button, someone could make another person smile, or give words of hope and encouragement to a friend in need, or even help repair a broken relationship. Cyberspace is a vortex(漩渦)that is easy to get caught up in, but we must find a balance to keep both feet in reality while traveling across the online world.

1What does the underlined part in Paragraph l mean?

A. You can’t break away from your phone.

B. You decide to get rid of this bad behaviour later.

C. You return to going cycling the following day.

D. You are caught in the busy life.

2What can be learned about the milennials?

A. They often mistake facts for personal opinions.

B. They prefer to communicate face to face.

C. They are often made fun of in the cyberspace.

D. They don’t make their own judgement.

3What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A. To state the ill effect of social media.

B. To prove the benefit of cyberspace.

C. To suggest using the social media wisely.

D. To introduce the function of phones.

4Which way of using social media is advised by the writer?

A. Being glued to the phones all the time.

C. Losing themselves in the cyberspace.

D. Fighting against others.

【題目】The minute Joe Serna walked into the Veterans Treatment Court, he could feel his shoulders tense up. He had come to turn himself in (自首).

Six months earlier, Serna had been arrested for driving after drinking and was required to report to Judge Lou Olivera’s court every two weeks to take a test and prove he hadn’t been drinking. Serna had passed every biweekly screening—until the week before. Positive. He decided to try to bluff his way out of trouble. “I never had a drink, Judge,” he told the court.

^Both Joe Serna and Judge Olivera were old soldiers, and Olivera had come to know and admire Serna as he participated in the court’s program to help old soldiers with drinking and addiction problems. And that was what had brought Serna back to Olivera’s court a week after his lie. “This guy is a fellow soldier,” he told himself. “I need to make this right.” So Serna stood before Olivera and admitted, “I lied, Judge. I was drinking.”

After countless combats and the memories of many “best buddies” losing their lives, 39-year-old Joe Serna left the army in 2013 with 18 years of service. But in truth, the terrible memories had never left him and would reappear in nightmares. And that’s the reason for his drinking. To this day, being stuck in a closed space can cause flashbacks (突然重現(xiàn)) for Serna.

On the day when Serna admitted he had lied about drinking, the judge was moved and decided on the punishment: one night in jail.

The next night, Joe Serna was in a small cell and felt he would soon be flashing back to a terrible war. Then the door opened, and Judge Olivera came in. Serna was confused. But a few minutes later, he understood the judge had decided to spend the night with him. The two talked for hours about their service, their families, and their hopes for the future. At around one in the morning, Serna fell asleep. “He will be OK now,” the judge said to himself as he rolled up his shirt into a makeshift pillow.

1Which can best replace the underlined words in the second paragraph?

A. explain without being disturbed B. get away with his wrong-doing

C. give the court a little trouble D. give up drinking in future

2What made Serna decide to turn himself in?

A. His sickness in his shoulders. B. His admiration for Olivera.

C. Olivera’ s help and identity. D. The advice of Serna’s family.

3What can we know about Joe Sema?

A. He didn’t admit his fault and thus got punished.

B. He lost his life direction and got himself drunk often.

C. He had planned to talk more with Olivera in the cell.

D. He joined the army when he was 21 years old.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A. An Army of Two B. A Considerate Judge

C. Two Soldiers’ War Experience D. Honesty Is the Best Policy
