【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Most people don’t need science to appreciate the importance of a mother’s love.

But to understand how early maltreatment can derail a child’s development requires careful study. In a famous research, Harry Harlow had demonstrated that proper psychological and physical development of infants requires nurturing and attention from a parent. 1 In that research, socially isolated monkey babies that were removed from their mothers were found to be clinging to a cloth-covered surrogate(替代的) mother for comfort.

Such experimentations sound cruel. They, however, have been critical in helping change policies in human orphanages( 孤兒院 ) in the U.S. For centuries some orphanages treated infants equally inhumanely. Despite early evidence that orphanage infants were far more likely to die than others, supporters argued that it didn’t matter whether children had “parents” specially devoted to them at the orphanage. 2 Orphans were supposed to be in positive mental and physical health until adoptive parents were found. Babies, they said, couldn’t remember anyway.

The harrowing consequences of these theories were most vividly brought to light in Romania in the 1980s and ‘90s. A ban on abortion(流產(chǎn) ) led to a surge in orphanage babies. Simply being fed and changed without individualized affection, some babies present serious problems. Many developed violent behaviors, repetitively rocking or banging their heads. Some were cold and withdrawn or indiscriminately affectionate. 3 Their head sizes were especially small.

They even had problems with attention and comprehension. The longer these children were left alone, the more damage was seen.

The lack of a secure attachment relationship in the early years has destructive consequences for both physical and mental health later in life, with long-lasting effects. The persistence of these effects emphasizes the need to intervene early in life. The Nobel-prize-winning economist James Heckman, has long argued that investing in early childhood education provides a greater return for society than virtually any other type of spending. It is obviously reflected in increased educational success and productivity,. The reduced crime, addiction, distress and disorder point to the same theory. Early life conditions critically affect adult life. 4 Remove it and the harm is great.

A. The appropriate feeding and caring styles were greatly rewarded in all aspects.

B. It was claimed that simply feeding and changing them would be adequate.

C. Some, however, demonstrate little influence with roughly ordinary behavior pattern.

D. Maternal attachment plays a fundamental role in shaping who we are.

E. Necessities are not just the availability of food and water.

F. And they simply didn’t grow like normal infants.

【題目】Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think aboutthemselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑).They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accepttheir weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.

1The first paragraph is mainly about______.

A. the cause of shyness B. the effect of shyness on people

C. the feelings of shy people D. the questions in the minds of shy people

2According to the writer, self-awareness is______.

A. harmful to people B. a weak point of shy people

C. the cause of unhappiness D. a good characteristic

3What is the shy people's reaction to praise?

A. They are pleased by it. B. They feel it is not true.

C. They are very sensitive to it. D. They feel they are worthy of it.

4We can learn from the passage that shyness can ______.

A. block our chances for a successful life

B. help us to live up to our full development

C. enable us to understand ourselves better

D. have nothing to do with lack of self respect

【題目】 The novel coronavirus outbreak has greatly affected the lives of people across the world. It has challenged and changed people' lifestyles. It has also helped us think about our relationships with others.

Changing our lives

①COVID-19 has made people think harder about their relationship with nature. It has also raised questions about urban lifestyles. The sharing economy, working in open offices, living in crowded apartments and the food industry's use of reusable products have made the perfect storm for a pandemic.

②Although the sharing economy might be good it's cheaper to rent than to own sharing spaces and objects are great ways to spread the virus. How does one do “social distancing" when they are expected to share cars, bikes, apartments and even the same offices?

③The trend of using open offices, which can save space, is working against us. In this type of office, workers don't have their own desk - everything is shared. Sometimes, computers and chairs are also shared, which is not hygienic (衛(wèi)生的). Fortunately, more workers are working from home during the pandemic, but that won't last forever.

④Reusability is a common practice in the restaurant industry. Reusable cups and chopsticks are often used. Unfortunately, reusable products increase the chance of spreading disease. For example, Starbucks recently stopped refilling customers' reusable cups in order to stop the spread of the virus.

⑤People like to be social. But the virus has made this more dangerous. We have to be careful about how we interact with others for now. Perhaps we need to rethink about our lifestyles to reduce the spread of future pandemics.

4The author probably agrees that________.
