“Croeso I Gymru!,” If you don't know what this means, read on to find out more.

When you cross over the border from England into Wales, you don't have to show your passport but you do notice a difference immediately. All the road markings and signs are shown in two languages — English and Welsh (威爾士語). Not all visitors to Britain know that other languages are spoken here. There's the Gaelic (蓋爾語) language in Scotland and a few people speak Cornish (康沃爾語)in the southwest of England, but the most widely spoken language in the UK besides English is Welsh.

Perhaps the first Welsh word you'll see on the road into Wales is ARAF. There's a helpful English translation next to it — SLOW. As you can see, Welsh looks quite different from English. It sounds very different, too. Welsh looks and sounds so different from English because it’s a Celtic language. Celtic cultures still exist around the edges of the UK — in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and also in parts of France. For hundreds of years, almost everyone in Wales spoke Welsh, but nowadays there are about 600 thousand Welsh speakers — around 20% of the population.

So is Welsh dying out? Not at all! Nowadays, all school children in Wales study Welsh and many choose to go to an all Welsh-speaking school. You can get public information in Welsh, speak Welsh in court or take a course at university in Welsh. People surf the Internet in Welsh, keep up with friends on Facebook and write blogs in Welsh.

By the way, “Croeso I Gymru!" means “Welcome to Wales!” 一 I hope you'll be able to visit it one day.

1.According to the passage, Welsh ________.

A. has developed from Cornish

B. is still widely used in the UK

C. sounds a little similar to English

D. is more widely spoken than before

2.How does the author feel about the future of Welsh?

A. Optimistic.B. Curious.C. Worried.D. Confused.

3.What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A. To explain a typical Welsh term.

B. To compare English with Welsh.

C. To give an introduction to Welsh.

D. To encourage people to visit Wales.

I love camping. It’s my favorite way to spent the summer vacation. Last year, my family and me went camping in the countryside. It was one of the most excited experiences I had never had. We slept in a tent and went for a long walk every day. We cooked over a fire and the food always tasted wonderfully. For a whole week, I appreciated lovely mountain views or breathed fresh air. At the night, I heard the gentle wind blowing in the tree, and I felt so peaceful. It doesn’t cost many to camp. I believe it’s the best way to get close nature and enjoy its beauty.

科目:高中英語 來源:2017屆河南開封高三上期定位考試10月英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

I wrote a business plan the other day. I gave it to my husband for suggestions. After reading it, he said, “I don’t think this is up to your usual standards.” I said, “I need more information. What doesn’t work?” He said he wasn’t sure. I then took the letter and reread it.

He asked, “How about if I look at it again and make notes between the space?” I agreed. A half hour later I looked at his notes and told him he didn’t understand the situation and what I really wanted to express. He shrugged (聳肩) and said OK. I took the letter and went back to my computer and again revised. As I was writing, I could see my letter improving based on his suggestions. When I finished, I proudly handed the letter back to my husband. He read it for the third time and said, “It’s still not right but I couldn’t exactly say.” I was a little annoyed and then told him I was the writer and I had seen some goofy letters he sent out. But I picked up my letter and went back to the computer.

After an hour of revisions, I went back to my husband apologetically with letter in hand. I told him I was sorry for what I’d said and asked if he would please read the letter again because I did value his contribution. Being a very patient and kind-hearted fellow, he once again read my letter and declared that it was fine.

This all leads me to the following: When you ask for advice on a project, be appreciative and grateful. Understand that the advice and suggestions you get may be negative. Understand that it may mean more work for you. And keep in mind that the final responsibility for the project is still yours. So be modest and thankful even if he or she has noted some problems.

1.Why did the author give her business plan to her husband at first?

A. To show off her excellent work.

B. To have him type it on the computer.

C. To ask him to make some changes from all details.

D. To ask him to give her some advice.

2.The author’s husband shrugged after hearing her words because he ________.

A. believed in his judgement but couldn’t find why

B. knew there was nothing wrong in the business plan

C. doubted about himself since he found no excuses

D. believed he himself was right and knew the roots

3.We can infer from the passage that the author’s husband was _________.

A. selfish, proud and determined

B. good at expressing himself

C. honest, kind and patient

D. humorous, active and careful

4.The author wants to tell us that if you ask for suggestions, ________.

A. do accept all suggestions from the givers

B. don’t get upset if some are negative

C. do keep silent before taking action

D. do be grateful and confident

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, so as not to appear rude, she went along.

As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."

They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, "Why salt with coffee?" He explained, "When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea. I could feel it salty, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there."

She was deeply moved. A man who can admit that he's homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible. She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.

They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. And to think she would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee! So they married and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.

After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:

My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar. It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that we would hit it off. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything. Sweetheart, I don't exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I've learnt to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

1.She accepted his invitation for coffee because ________.

A. she fell in love with him

B. she didn’t want to be impolite

C. no one paid attention to him

D. no one else was interested in her

2.Why the man asked for some salt was because ________.

A. salty coffee made him miss his parents.

B. he want to catch the attention of the lady

C. he was so nervous that he made a mistake

D. he was telling a lie on purpose

3.What might be the women’s feeling after she read the letter?

A. movedB. cheatedC. hurtD. angry

4.The best title for the passage might be ________.

A. A Life-long LieB. Salty Coffee

C. A Mistake for LoveD. A Homesick Man

科目:高中英語 來源:2017屆甘肅蘭州市高三上學(xué)期期中考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is America’s fifth largest city. Once a major American colonial city, it is the home of America’s first library, its first hospital, and its first zoo. Now it is also the first US city to be named a World Heritage City. On November 6, 2015, Philadelphia joined more than 260 other cities that have been recognized for their influence on the world. These cities include Paris, France, Florence, Italy, and Cairo, Egypt.

“Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia,” remarked Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter when the announcement was made. “As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world.

To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, the site is Independence Hall.

Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in US history—the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution—were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. The US Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American democratic system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.

Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger says the city’s selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city is home to dozens of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world.” Greenberger says.

1.We can learn from Paragraph 1 that Philadelphia ________.

A. is known for many America’s firsts

B. has been famous as a World Heritage City

C. has the best American hospital

D. has contributed a lot to the global economy

2.In Paragraph 2, Michael Nutter is talking about ________.

A. the World Heritage City

B. the significance of the city’s selection

C. the history of Philadelphia

D. the contributions of the city

3.What opinion does Alan Greenberger hold?

A. It’s easy for the city to win the honor.

B. The honor will bring the city a better future.

C. It won’t be long before the city takes off.

D. The city really deserves the honor.

4.What could be the best title for the text?

A. Philadelphia Makes a DifferenceB. Philadelphia Develops a Lot

C. Philadelphia Makes HistoryD. Philadelphia Wins Global Respect

Last Thursday, I was standing near a subway exit, try to call a taxi. But no luck. Then I thought of the taxi-booking app my friend has recommended and I booked a taxi through my cell phone. Soon it came and I got into the taxi, feeling pretty proudly of my high-tech way and satisfied with the convenience brought by the app. So later, I found that the driver was busy looking his cell phone to get the next order. It was just then when I began to worry about my safety. What’s bad, the driver’s informations might be false. How can we passengers’ legal rights be protecting if something bad happens? Therefore, be careful when you use the taxi-booking app the next time.
