One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods from door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to     36    for a meal at the next house.

There were a lot of people with swimming     , yet there were only two people with private (私人的)tennis court; his friend in Chicago was one of them. I told him that I knew several   like that, including my brother, who was doctor in California. He       that maybe there were more private courts in the country than he     but he did not know of any others. Then he asked me    my brother lived in California. When I said Sacramento, he said that was a coincidence (巧合)    _ his Chicago friend also spent the summer in Sacramento last year and he lived next door to a      who had a tennis court in his backyard. I said I felt that really was a coincidence because my next-door neighbour had gone to Sacramento last summer and had     __ the house next to my brother’s house. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.
“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He      and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my       to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought   11 . My complaints, even self-justified(自有道理)  12 , were always landing on   13  ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end up with their   14  into tears. I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to   15  my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time tidying their rooms. On their desks, in plain  16 , I left the cards: “Dear Bill(the other card was   17  to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.”  18  arriving back, the children were   19  excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy   20
for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and   21  asking them to play a certain violin  22 . Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas   23
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little   24 : “If you can finish your homework and go over your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in   25  of well-done jobs the day   26 .
27  I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its (貼條). The bathroom mirror became the   28  centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be   29 .
We all benefited from and  30  the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

It was 20 years ago. I was driving home with my 4-year-old son. Traffic was light. I was singing quietly along   36  the song playing on the radio. I   37   at the intersection(交叉路口) and looked both ways. The road was   38 . I slowly started to make a right turn when suddenly a car rounded the curve at high speed and came straight at me. I stomped (猛踩) on the brakes of my car  39 the engine in the process. The speeder zoomed (疾馳) past my dead car  40  me by inches without even slowing down.
41  I knew it, a stream of rude words was flying from my lips,   42  after the car and its driver. I then saw my son who was staring up at me   43 . With a red face and a(an)   44  smile I started the car, pulled back onto the road, and headed home.
Later that evening I was reading a book when I heard certain  45 words coming from my son’s bedroom. He was replaying the   46  over and over in his mind. Too   47  I realized the   48  of those words that had   49  from my lips in that moment of anger. It took a lot of talks about good language and bad language with my son to undo (消除)the   50  of that incident.
That  51  , however, did teach me just how strong words  52  be. It helped me to decide to stop swearing (咒罵) in my own life and to start using words uplifting and   53   instead. I slowly realized that language is a gift from God and should be used to make our world better but not worse. I learned   54  that a few loving words can help a hurting heart, strengthen a   55  spirit, and lighten a heavy load. I pray then that all of your words today are full of love, joy, happiness, and light.
