【題目】 Suppose that we lined up our roughly 14 million United States businesses in order of size, starting with the smallest, along an imaginary road from San Francisco to New York. There will be 4,500 businesses to the mile, or a little less than one per foot. Suppose further that we planted a flag each business. The height of the flag pole represents the yearly volume of sales (銷量) , each $ 10, 000 in sales in shown by one foot of pole.
The line of flagpoles is a very interesting sight. From San Francisco to about Reno, it is almost unnoticeable, a row of poles about a foot high. From Reno eastward the poles increase in height until, near Columbus, Ohio - about four - fifths of the way across the nation - flags fly about 10 feet in the air.
But as we approach the eastern terminus (終點) , the poles suddenly begin to mount (升高) . There are about 300, 000 firms in the country with sales over $ 500, 000. These firms take up the last 75 miles of the 3,000 - mile road. There are 200, 000 firms with sales over $ 1 million. They take up the last 50 miles. Then there are 1, 000 firms with sales of $ 50, 000, 000 or more. They take up the last quarter of a mile before the city limits, flags flying at cloud height, 5 , 000 feet up .
At the very gate of New York, on the last 100 feet of the last mile , we find the 100 largest industrial firms . They have sales of at least $ 1.5 billion, so that their flags are already miles high. Along the last 10 feet of road , there are 10 largest companies . Their sales are roughly $ 10 billion and up : their flags fly 190 miles in the air , almost in the stratosphere (平流層) .
【1】What is the author’s main purpose in this passage?
A.To tell the reason why the largest firms are in New York.

這是一篇說明文。文章通過想象了一條從西向東的路,在路上插旗子來表示美國公司的銷售規(guī)模,結果顯示,從西向東規(guī)模越來越大。
【1】推理判斷題。第一段Suppose that we lined up our roughly 14 million United States businesses in order of size, starting with the smallest, along an imaginary road from San Francisco to New York.(假設我們將大約1400萬家美國企業(yè)按照規(guī)模排序,從最小的開始,沿著一條想象中的從舊金山到紐約的道路排列。)是全文的主題句,結合全文內容,可知作者寫這篇文章的主要目的是是提供美國商業(yè)規(guī)模的大致概念。故選 C。
【2】細節(jié)理解題:From San Francisco to about Reno, it is almost unnoticeable, a row of poles about a foot high. From Reno eastward the poles increase in height until, near Columbus, Ohio - about four - fifths of the way across the nation - flags fly about 10 feet in the air.可知從東向西排列順序是C. New York, Columbus, Reno, San Francisco。故選C
【3】細節(jié)理解題:從第三段的句子:These firms take up the last 75 miles of the 3,000 - mile road.可知最后的75英里的公司銷售額最大。故選A
【4】細節(jié)理解題:從第二段的內容可知San Francisco是一英尺,從Reno到Columbus上升至10 英尺,第三段可知New York是5,000英尺。故選B

Dear Ms. J. K. Rowling,
It is great pleasure to write to you. I like reading all of your Harry Potter book. A few days before, I listened to a radio programme about you. Now I know that you teach English at home and in others countries before you started writing books. I also know that you could only write the first book while your baby daughter was asleep, so you worked on them for five years. That was a very much difficult job. Your son David and your daughter Jessica must be proud for you. I hope I can become as successfully as you when I grow up. Thank you for spending time read my letter.
Yours sincerely,
Michele

【題目】 I am the proud owner of three pet dogs. Over the years, I have watched their behaviours carefully that help me when I travel around the world.
One important lesson that my dog, Cody, taught me is how to deal with little problems in life. From his calm behavior when someone knocked unexpectedly at the door to the indifferent way he has dealt with his recent serious illness, he has always had the same easy-going attitude. This attitude is an important lesson to me in how I can face difficult situations when travelling, I've learned to try to handle bad situations calmly, such as when we miss a train, lose luggage, and so on.
Another dog of mine, Preston, loves to walk around the yard, spending hours smelling every place and finding out what it means to him. Taking it slowly is another lesson that’s been very hard for me to learn. As an active traveller, I am actually experiencing less by speeding through everything, rather than slowly getting to know a place. Even if it means that you won’t see as many things, going slowly when you travel is the only way to really get to know a new place. Rushing around a foreign city isn’t fun at all.
My dog, Moya, came from a truly bad situation. I am not sure what happened to her before; I just know it wasn’t good. Although she has become more relaxed over the years, she is still slightly on edge. She is very cautious when faced with any new situation. But once she’s accustomed to her new surroundings, she is fine. She doesn’t let fear influence her experience. The same can be applied to our travel experience. No matter where we go, we need to manage new situations with caution——while at the same time not letting that caution turn into fear.
Many thanks to my pets. Truly speaking, pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pies. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. After all, pets are people, too, with the help of whom I am able to gain a lot and live differently.
【1】One of the three dogs, Cody, .
A.once suffered from a serious illnessB.is excited when under pressure
C.enjoys walking around the yardD.is unable to deal with new situations
【2】From Preston, the author learned that one should .
A.pay attention to the details in lifeB.see as many things as possible when travelling
C.stay indifferent to strangersD.travel around slowly and have fun
【3】The underlined phrase “on edge” in the fourth paragraph probably means _____.
A.hungryB.nervousC.calmD.happy
【4】Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.

【題目】Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be only used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Sept 27 is World Tourism Day. Of course, travel isn’t a new discovery. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese 【1】, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how 【2】 must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the 【3】 of the Silk Road.
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Nowadays, more people are traveling than ever before. By train, plane and car, people all around the globe are 【4】 to places that people didn’t even know 【5】 a few centuries ago, or only knew from books.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on the TV, and the White House, and all the other famous 【6】 But none of that would compare to the 【7】 of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into 【8】.
Although travel is often just for fun, it’s also 【9】. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is 【10】 a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. The British politician Benjamin Disraeli summed this up well when he said, “Travel teaches toleration.”

Today, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train, I have never had the courage to do it, though.

Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have
asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn(號) and started
to practice.
Angie O’Edema ·42 minutes ago
I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologised to me. When his phone rang again later, heleft his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.
