I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, “You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.

My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationery exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.

Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, “Character cannot be developed in ease. Only through experiences of suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”

One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity (逆境). From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our making but many are no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the adversity, we can choose our attitude towards it.

Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said, “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, you’ll never use crutches (拐杖) or a stick, and then have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible.”

The biographies (傳記) of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.

Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.

American government suggests that children and teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. But less than half of children and just 10% of teens meet these suggestions. What’s the deal?

It’s reported that about 44million US kids participate in organized sports(such as baseball, softball, soccer). But a new study says just one-quarter of kids get the government-recommended amount of exercise when they show up for team practices. The study, published online last month in a medical journal, says younger kids and boys do better than teens and girls.

The study looked at 200 kids aged 7 to 14 who played on soccer, baseball and softball teams. The kids wore sensors to measure their activity during practices.

During each practice, kids averaged 30 minutes of downtime(停工期). “It is not clear how much physical activity is provided by youth sports practices,” say the California-based authors of the study. “Much of the time may be inactive, such as receiving verbal instructions and waiting for turns.”

What’s a parent or coach—or kid—to do? The authors of the study suggest increasing the number of practices, extending the time of practices and changing it up(加快)during practices. For example, the coach could give each player a ball at the same time. Rather than focusing on one player’s skills, it’s best to get the whole team moving.

But, the study says, the bottom line is that team sports aren’t enough exercise. For a child to meet the US physical activity suggestions, the kid will have to do more than just join a team. Exercise is also necessary during breaks, during physical education class, after school and even on the way to school.

1.According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Only 10% of the teens can’t meet the suggestions about physical activity.

B. About 11 million US kids can get enough amount of exercise in team practices.

C. The new study was published on a famous magazine last month.

D. Teens do better than girls and younger kids in the new study.

2.The underlined word “extending” in Paragraph 5 means ..

C. class advisers and researchers

D. kids and headmasters

4.What’s the best title of the passage?

Subject: Hi!

Dear Mr. Mallory,

I am writing to tell you my deep disappointment for my experience at Lingua Nova English summer school in the first two weeks of July. I had been thoroughly looking forward to learning English and learning about culture in the UK, but I am afraid that my time at your summer school failed to live up to my expectations.

Your brochure states that the student accommodation is situated "in the heart of Edinburgh". This is misleading as my accommodation was, in fact, situated a good fifty minutes bus ride from the city center in what I can only describe as a less than picturesque part of the suburbs.

In addition, the activity programme did not reflect the fact that we were located in one of Europe's most interesting and historical cities: one evening activity consisted of a walk to a nearby park, another was a trip to a narrow street which was not usually used by cars. Finally, on our one trip into the city center our "guide" readily admitted that she was not from Edinburgh, and had in fact never visited the city before. I had been eagerly expecting a guided tour of Scotland's treasures. In fact, I was left in the city center with no map and told to "check things out" while your employee went shopping in Princes Street.

This was a long awaited trip and cost me over two years' hard work and saving. Although I do have positive memories of my trip (my English teachers were knowledgeable and inspiring), the accommodation and activity programme were wholly unsatisfactory.

I would like to get my money back for the accommodation and would really appreciate a reply within the next two weeks.

Yours sincerely,

Jovan Gagic

C. To bring him disappointment.

D. To get him into trouble.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年貴州遵義航天高級中學高二3月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Students from Florida International University in Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it, they wore aquatic(水上的) shoes they designed and created.

Alex Quinines was the first to make it to the other side of a 175-foot lake on campus in record time — just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boat-like shoes, also won last year and will receive $500. Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture, Professor Jaime Canaves’ Materials and Methods Construction Class. “It’s traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race. I thought our students were a little bit more special than that,” Canaves said. “We decided to do the walk on water event to take it to the next level.”

A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams. Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake. Others who fell got back up and made it to the end. The race is open to all students and anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9-year-old girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67-year-old female.

A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the races. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end.

“A part of this is for them to have more understanding and designing and make it work better,” he said. It is also a lesson in life for the student.

“Anything, including walking on water, is possible, if you do the research, test it and go through the design process seriously.”

1.For what purpose did the students take part in the race?

A. To go across the lake to school.

B. To pass Professor Jaime Canaves’ class.

C. To test their balance on the water.

D. To win the prize money of $500.

2.Which of the following statements is TURE according to the passage?

A. Most students finished the class assignment successfully.

B. The students who fell into the water were criticized seriously by Professor Jaime Canaves.

C. The students wore shoes distributed by Professor Jaime Canaves to walk across the lake.

D. The students took part in the race to challenge their physical abilities.

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Alex Quinines is a top student in the university.

B. It’s a custom for the people in the community to get involved in student activities.

C. The student who made it in to the end in the race would succeed in their professional career.

D. Professor Canaves attaches importance to hands-on learning experience.

4.The purpose of the passage is to .

A. show approval of the unique teaching style

B. inspire teachers to be more creative

C. report an interesting assignment

D. encourage more people to take part in the race
