1. This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money. “Putting money away for a rainy day.” is another way to talk about saving for the future.

People who hate to spend money are known as “tightwads”, while those who like to get the most value for their money are called “thrifty”. 2. A spendthrift is someone who spends wastefully. People like that are often said to spend money “l(fā)ike a drunken sailor” or “l(fā)ike there is no tomorrow”.

In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. 3. Credit unions are cooperatives for people who have some kind of connection. For example, the members might work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are nonprofit organizations.

Credit unions, banks and other financial institutions pay interest on savings accounts. But the rates are low. Certificates of deposit (定期存款) pay higher returns. With Certificates of deposit, people agree not to withdraw the money for a certain period of time. This term could be anywhere from a few months to several years. 4. People can withdraw the money early but they have to pay a penalty.(罰金)

In many countries, people have been saving less over the years. It is reported that in 2000, Americans had a household savings rate of 7%. 5. Many European countries have higher rates, but Americans save more than families in Japan.

A.People are willing to save money for the future.

B.Before gold, even kings take off their hats.

C.A penny saved is a penny earned.

D.Longer terms, and large amounts, pay higher interest.

E.This year the rate is expected to be a little more than four percent.

1. penny saved is a penny earned. 由第一段第二句“This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money.”

2. thrifty person is different from a spendthrift. 聯(lián)系上下文,上一句“while those who like to get the most value for their money are called “thrifty””把錢花在最有價(jià)值的地方的人叫做節(jié)儉,這里解釋了什么是“thrifty”,下一句“A spendthrift is someone who spends wastefully.”

3. include banks and credit unions. 由前一句“In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. ”在美國,想存錢的人關(guān)于把錢存在哪兒有不同的選擇,可知下一句應(yīng)是介紹有哪幾種選擇。而且后文注重介紹了credit union可知,此處應(yīng)填與credit union相關(guān)的句子,故選F。

4. terms, and large amounts, pay higher interest.

5. year the rate is expected to be a little more than four percent.

A. Who does freelancing?

B. The advantages and disadvantages of freelance

C. The definition of freelance

D. Key to freelance success

E. What is freelancing really like?

F. The best way to develop a career

1.______________________

Freelance is a word that goes back to medieval times when it was used to describe soldiers who sold their skills to those prepared to pay their market rate. Today it’s an increasingly common way of working for people in a range of occupations and appeals to many who feel constrained by corporate culture.

2.______________________

What you gain is freedom of movement, what you can lose is a sense of belonging. You can end up feeling isolated from normal support networks, because suddenly you are responsible for your own welfare, training, safety, career development, equipment, professional updating and a thousand other things. It is easy to remain unaware of these things in the relatively cosseted existence of full-time employment. So before you leap up into this exciting and potentially rewarding way of working, stand back and take a look at the risks.

3._____________________

Freelancing has always been a common way of working for writers, artists and performers, but the range of occupations with a substantial number of freelancers is growing steadily. Anyone with a marketable skill can choose to go it alone. Websites offer a free directory listing for those with skills to sell. Their categories include accountants, healthcare consultants, landscape architects and computer trainers. Areas of work that have problems recruiting staff are always keen to employ freelancers.

4.______________________

Being a freelance is different from other forms of self-employment—you still work for an employer or several employers but have to develop a completely different set of relationships with them. Employers are now your customers, you are their supplier. You have to become indispensable to them, providing solutions to their problems, some of which they may not even realize they have. In many ways you have to behave like their dream employee, being more willing and available than you may have got used to while in a “proper job”.

5.______________________

You also have to be aware of, and sensitive to ,the fact that you can be seen as a threat by your customer’s conventional employees, who may regard you as taking work they can do. Successful freelancing relies on the co-operation of everyone you come into contact with. Work that brings you into conflict with an existing workforce can be more trouble than it’s worth.

“It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That’s an old proverb(諺語) that is being quoted more and more often these days. And I’m pleased about that.

Today, more and more schools are reaching out to involve parents, community members and businesses to help shape a child’s future.

Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers---they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together. It’s important to stay in touch with your child’s education all through his or her school career.

Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. Help with homework, read to a child, coach a children’s team, or provide emotional support. Help solve problems and build self-esteem. Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.

Businesses can also help shape our children’s future. Invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how to use a computer; how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, teacher, nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.

It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility---and the joy---of bringing a child to his or her full potential.

1.The implied advice in the proverb “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” is that ______.

A. All the people in a village should give food to a child.

B.Schools, parents, and other organizations should share the responsibility of shaping a child’s future.

C. Children’s should be brought up in the village where they were born.

D. Schools should be set up in the village where a child was raised.

2.The text was written mainly for _______________.

A. parents and members in organizations

B. teachers and students

C. newspaper reporters and developing electricians

D. education experts and government officials

3.Students can get developed in practical working skill through ______.

A. parental involvement B. community activities

C. business training D. school teaching

4.Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Parents play an important part in children’s education.

B. Communities have not a bit effect on the way to new and high ideal.

C. Educating a child well demands of the work not only from school but from other organizations.

D. Businesses may arrange some training courses for students.

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities (設(shè)備) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia (白血病) because of her work with radioactivity(輻射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

1.Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal?

A. Because she received a degree in mathematics.

B. Because she contributed to saving the wounded.

C. Because she won the Nobel Prize with Frederic.

2.Where did Irene Curie meet her husband Frederic Joliot?

A. At the Curie Institute.

B. At the University of Paris.

C. At a military hospital.

D. At the College of Sévigné.

3.When was the second child of Irene Curie and Frederic Joliot born?

A. In 1932. B. In 1927.

C. In 1897. D. In 1926.

4.In which of the following aspects was Irene Curie different from her mother?

A. Irene worked with radioactivity.
