Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.

The shoes-named Square Eyes-contain an electronic pressure sensor arid a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day.A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day's efforts.

The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK.“We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,”she says.“And I wanted to tackle that with my design.”

Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off.And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.

Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both.Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.

Existing pedometers(計(jì)步器)normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement.Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat.“It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,”she says.“That was one of my main design considerations.”

  Ben

When I left school five years ago, I said to myself, “that's that! No more learning for me. Now I can enjoy myself in the evening.” But about a year ago the boss said, “We're going to get a computer in the near future.” What does he mean? I simply don't know. Anyway, I decided to go to evening classes. I'm quite an expert on computers now and, you know, I actually enjoy studying.

  Evn

I haven't much interest in studying. To be honest, I don't like reading very much, except for magazines and that sort of thing. Just light reading, that is, to pass the time. But I do enjoy TV. Not that I watch everything. In fact, I choose my programmes very carefully. I'm particularly interested in current affairs. In some ways I think I learn more this way than I did at school.

  Ted

I'm a very sort of person - I simply love doing things. That's why I enjoy sports so much. I mean, actually playing. I hardly ever watch it on TV, but I do read quite a bit about it. I'm even interested in the history of sports. I don't have much time for anything else, except that I quite like dancing. Some people say I'm not very good at it, though.

  Joan

I should say I have great interest in studying. I'd rather do this than anything e1se. Since I left school, I've taken courses in all sorts of things. I go to the city library once a week, but I much prefer evening classes because it's more fun that way. My latest “craze(狂熱)” - if you can call it that - is foreign languages. I'm learning two, not one!

Some people believe that international sport brings about good will between the nations and that if country play games together they will learn to live together.Others say that the opposite is true:that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the terrible incident with the number of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by those incidents caused mainly by minor national contests.

One country received its second-place medal with great anger after the hockey(曲棍球)final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the loser objecting to the final decision. They were certain that one of their goals should not have been dismissed and that the opposite side’s victory was unfair.Their manager was angry when he said, “This wasn’t hockey.Hockey and the International Hockey Society are finished.” The president of the society said later that such words could result in the pause of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not give away first place to Russia, after a fighting end to their contest. The game had ended in quarrel. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play.A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another beat it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. The judges discusses the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then decided not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played for honor or money rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that sportsmen should compete as individual(個(gè)人),or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for.But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages dangerous nationalism.
