　　“Keep an eye on this,”said my older brother, Paul, handing me his watch．

　　“What for?”I asked．

　　“I'm going to practice my diving．”

　　“Off the high dive?”I asked．

　　I couldn't believe how far away the water was．I felt as if I were on the edge of a cliff with a mile of air between me and a bottomless sea．I couldn't; I just couldn't．I had to get back down．But there were impatient kids on the steps behind me．Would they let me by, or would they tease me?And Paul－even in my terror I guessed what he would say．

　　Suddenly I heard Paul shouting far below．“Come down right now!My watch, you're wearing my watch．”

　　An unbelievably sweet relief flooded into me．I quickly turned and threaded my way through the waiting divers, murmuring,“Excuse me, sorry, I just forget about the watch…”

　　I didn't even bother to pretend with Paul．He said,“I could see that you were in trouble．You were scared to death, weren't you?I nodded．

　　“It happens,”said Paul．“I was scared, too, the first few times off the high board．I got over it, and so will you．But for now you're saved．”

　　In Europe, men do not usually wear skirts. But the Scottish national clothing for men is a kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish like to be different. 　　These kilts had colorful stripes (條紋) going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the color they liked best.
