We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor.Because of this, most people think that craft(手藝)no longer exists.

One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(持久性).No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.

Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Not can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway.Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.

One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools.Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts(精確切割)on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.

The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, ________.

Sooner or later everyone has to write something-a thank-you note, a report at a meeting, a complaint or an apology. If you hate writing assignments in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you’re facing a tiger. How to write it?There’s no mystery.Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.

  Thinking on paper

Sit down with pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start outlining what you want to say, why it’s important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader.Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.

  Writing first sentence

Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because ________, the reader isn’t going to read on.Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and that answers the reader’s question “What’s in it for me?” If you can’t do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.

  Remembering the reader

Short, simple words are better than long words.Short sentences are better than long sentences.Remember that the goal is to communicate, not express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it.Too much information makes you lose readers before they get to the meat(某物之主要或重要的)of what you want to say.

  Reading and rewriting

Read what you have written out loud, and listening for any awkward sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite.Back off a little bit from what you’re writing. It’s an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day late.

1.What is the best title for the passage?(Please answer within 10 words.)

2.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

閱讀下面短文,然后根據(jù)文章后的題目要求回答問題。

You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read.In fact, too much emphasis on separate words both ________ and reduces your comprehension.

First, any habit which you slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud, is inefficient. If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the words with your lips, you read poorly.Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency(效率).One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat; another is “hearing” each word as you read.

These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago.The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together.Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning.

It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for expressing the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought, and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness.

An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud. He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time.If he “says” or “hears” words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.

1.What is the best title of the passage?(Please answer within 10 words.)

____________________________

2.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

These habits are formed when readers are young and they should have got rid of them as they grow up.

____________________________

3.Please fill in the blank in the first paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.(Please answer within 10 words.)

____________________________

4.What do you think is your bad reading habit? Why?(Please answer within 30 words.)
