My grandmother became a widow in 1970. Shortly after that, we went to the1shelter to pick out a dog to keep her2. Grandma decided on a little dog with a reddish-brown spot above each eye.3these spots, the dog was named Penny.
Grandma and Penny quickly became very4to each other, but that attachment grew much stronger about three years later5Grandma had a stroke(中風(fēng)). Grandma could no longer6, so when she came home from the hospital, she and Penny were7companions.
After her stroke, it became a real8for Grandma to let Penny in and out because9was at the bottom of a flight of stairs. So a mechanism(機械裝置)using a rope and pulley(滑輪)was 10from the door to a handle at the top of the stairs. Grandma just had to pull the handle to open and close the door. If the store was 11Penny’s favorite dog food, Grandma would make one of us12Penny browned beef with potatoes in it. I can remember 13my grandmother by saying that she loved that dog better than she loved her family.
As the years passed, it was not14for Grandma and Penny to separate each other. If Grandma went to take her nap(打盹), Penny stayed by her side until she15. As Penny aged, she could no longer jump up on the bed, so she 16on the rug (墊子)beside the bed. If Grandma went into the 17, Penny would walk along beside her, wait outside the door and accompany her 18to the bed or chair. Grandma never went anywhere without her 19companion by her side.
The time came when both my grandmother’s and Penny’s 20were failing fast. After fifteen years of loving companionship, Grandma and Penny passed away within a few hours of each other.

Roy died at an old age with many memories. His life was full of both good and bad memories, but he1to remember mostly the good. The bad memories that broke his heart and that he2with friends, involved the big war-World War II. So many things about his war experience he remembered3great detail.

Roy survived the attack on Normandy-he was part of the second wave that landed. He4with him the memories of water mixed with the blood of fallen soldiers. He experienced5, sweat, blood, fire and salt water just to get to the beach. In terror-filled moments that would forever change his life and the history of our world, his life was robbed of innocence(天真)6the realities of war engulfed(吞噬)him.
Not too many months later, he found himself cold and7. Close to being completely8from air supplies(供給)because of the weather, Roy and his fellows hung on to what little hope they could have. Then Christmas morning came, the weather cleared long enough for supplies to be9and word to spread that other troops would soon be there.
Many of the young men who began with Roy did not make it home10. They gave their lives to fighting against the Nazi. Those who did survive would never be the same. Many of them were the most patriotic(愛國的)people you would11meet, but most of them12war. They had experienced it. They knew its final realities-things got blown up while people were killed, and robbed of their beloved ones.
It is Memorial Day in the United States today. We all pray for an end for the world’s need for young men and young women to be placed in harm’s way. We also need to remember those who paid the huge13of wars-costs not counted in dollars, but in lost lives, broken hearts, forgotten innocence, broken families, and terrible memories. And as we remember to14those who paid this awful price, we also remember in hopes to see an end to war itself.
Please, in their honor, don’t forget their sacrifices(犧牲). Please, for our world’s sake, don’t forget to pray for15.
