It’s the Year of the Rat!
Millions of people crowded onto trains and buses across China on Wednesday. They were hurrying home to be with their families for the country’s most important holiday, the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival. Thursday marked the end of the Year of the Pig, and the beginning of the Year of the Rat. But for a while, it looked as if severe winter weather in some regions of China would put a deep freeze on the celebrations. Due to dangerous conditions, airlines, railways and highways across the country were forced to shut down for the past few weeks. Many travelers were worried that they would not make it home for the holidays. Luckily, the crisis started winding down just in time for some roads and railways to reopen on Lunar New Year’s Eve.
More than one billion people worldwide celebrate the Lunar New Year. In China, people from Beijing to Guangzhou enjoy a holiday. Businesses and government offices are closed. Many people go to temples to pray for good fortune for the future. The Lunar New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice(冬至).
On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings, and festivals. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with the lion dance. The lion is considered a holy animal. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions(or holding up elaborate paper lions in the air)perform to bring good luck to the people they visit at their homes or businesses. People often wear red, which symbolizes fire. Legend has it that fire can drive away bad luck. The 15-day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and families. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lamps are hung in parks around China.

Frankfurt: Renault SA Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said the future of electric cars depends on a rebound (反彈) in oil prices that may boost sales of the battery –powered vehicles he’s spending 4 billion euros ($ 5.9 billion) to develop.
“If oil is less than $ 70, we are going to have a problem,” Ghosn said in an interview at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Renault pledged to sell 100,000 electric cars by 2016 in Israel and Denmark, the first two countries to hire the Paris-based company’s US partner Better Place to roll out nationwide networks of battery-charging swapping stations.
Ghosn is pitting (絞盡腦汁)electric cars from Renault and Japanese affiliate Nissan Motor Co against a new generation of smaller, cheaper gasoline electric hybrids from rivals including Toyota Motor Corp. The French company’s Fluence sedan, on show for the first time in Frankfurt, will become the world’s first mass-market electric car if the agreement with Better Place pays off.
“The outlook for investors in electric cars is extremely dangerous, but if oil prices take off again, there may be a significant commercial opportunity and big rewards,” said Peter Schmidt, managing director of Warwick, England-based consulting firm Automotive Industry Data.
The price of oil, which stood at $70.75 a barrel(桶) by this morning in Europe, will rise to $75 tomorrow, based on the median(中間數(shù))of 35 estimates ranging from $40 to $110. It’s likely to fluctuate (波動)between $80 and $92 through 2013, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

One day, when we had been riding in the burning sun for five hours, we came to a narrow, shaky bridge where a railways crossed a stagnant pond (發(fā)臭的池塘)。 For 30 feet there was nothing but the widely-spaced wooden sleepers(枕木)under ore wheels, and nothing to stop us from falling into the steaming bog (沼澤) below if we overbalanced. Right under the bridge lay the bridge and rode straight over, without even slowing down. I stopped.
“What’s up?” he shouted, from the other side.
“I’m not riding over that thing. If I fall, I’ll be there with that cow!”
“There’s nothing to it. I just did it, didn’t I?”
“You’re stronger and taller. My feet can’t touch the ground. You do it for me!”
Mat said strength didn’t come into it and rode off, leaving me staring down into the sickly brown soup. He would be waiting for me around the next corner, but I knew he would give me at least an hour before coming to help. The sun burned my face; sweat ran off my forehead into my eyes and stuck my shirt to my body; mosquitoes flew into my mouth when I breathed. To stand still in this place was to kill myself; anyway, to sit around waiting for Mat to help was more than my feminist (女權(quán)主義) pride could take. The author stopped near the bridge because ______.
