  Native Americans from the southeastern pert of what is now the USA believe that the universe in which they live was made up of three separate, but related worlds: the Upper World, the Lower World, and This World. In the last there lived humans, most animals and all plant .

  This World, a round island resting on the surface of water, was supported(支撐)by four cords(弦)tied to the island at the four points. Lines drawn to connect the opposite points of the compass, from north to south and from east to west, got This World to divide it into wedge shaped segments. Thus, a symbolic representing of the human world was a cross within a circle, the cross representing the linking line(區(qū)域)and the circle the shape of This World.

  East segment of This World wag marked by its own color. According to the belief, the east was associated with the color of red because it was the direction of the Sun. Red was also the color of fire, believed directly connected with the Sun, with blood, and therefore with life. Finally, red was the color of success.
