10.Unlike chemists and physicists,who usually do their experiments using machines,biologists and medical researchers have to use living things like rats.But there are three Nobel prize-winning scientists who actually chose to experiment on themselves-all in the name of science,reported The Telegraph.
1.Werner Forssmann (Nobel prize winner in 1956)
Forssmann was a German scientist.He studied how to put a pipe inside the heart to measure the pressure inside and decide whether a patient needs surgery.
Experiments had been done on horses before,so he wanted to try with human patients.But it was not permitted because the experiment was considered too dangerous.
Not giving up,F(xiàn)orssmann decided to experiment on himself.He anaesthetized (麻醉) his own arm and made a cut,putting the pipe 30centimeters into his vein (靜脈).He then climbed two floors to the X-ray room before pushing the pipe all the way into his heart.
2.Barry Marshall (Nobel prize winner in 2005)
Most doctors in the mid-20th century believed that gastritis was down to stress,spicy food or an unusually large amount of stomach acid.But in 1979an Australian scientist named Robin Warren found that the disease might be related to a bacteria (細(xì)菌) called Helicobacter pylori.
So he teamed up with his colleague,Barry Marshall,to continue the study.When their request to experiment on patients was denied,Marshall bravely drank some of the bacteria.Five days later,he lost his appetite and soon was vomiting each morning-he indeed had gastritis.
3.Ralph Steinman (Nobel prize winner in 2011)
This Canadian scientist discovered a new type of immune system cell called the dendritic cell.He believed that it had the ability to fight against cancer.
Steinman knew he couldn't yet use his method to treat patients.So in 2007,when doctors told him that he had cancer and that it was unlikely for him to live longer than a year,he saw an opportunity.
With the help of his colleagues,he gave himself three different vaccines based on his research and a total of eight experimental therapies (療法).Even though Steinman eventually died from his cancer,he lived four and a half years,much longer than doctors had said he would.

D.three Nobel prize winners who did experiments on themselves
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?C
A.Forssmann's experiment ended in failure.
B.Forssmann managed to do his experiment on different kinds of animals.
C.Barry Marshall succeeded by drinking some Helicobacter pylori.
D.Barry Marshall's experiment on himself confirmed that most doctors'belief about gastritis was correct.
35.From the text,we can conclude that Ralph SteinmanB.
A.discovered a new type of cancer cell called the dendritic cell
B.tried different therapies containing the dendritic cell on himself

D.believed that he was better than doctors at treating cancer.

2.Graphs can be a very useful tool for conveying information,especially numbers,percentages,and other data.A graph gives the reader a picture to interpret.That can be a lot more efficient than pages and pages explaining the data.
Graphs can seem frightening,but reading a graph is a lot like reading a story.The graph has a title,a main idea,and supporting details.You can use your active reading skills to analyze and understand graphs just like any other text.
Most graphs have a few basic parts:a caption or introduction paragraph,a title,a legend or key,and labeled axes.An active reader looks at each part of the graph before trying to interpret the data.Captions will usually tell you where the data from(for example,a scientific study of 400African elephants from 1980to 2005).Captions usually summarize the author's main point as well.The title is very important.It tells you the main idea of the graph by stating what kind of information is being shown.A legend,also called a key,is a guide to the symbols and colors used in the graph.Many graphs,including bar graphs and line graphs,have two axes that form a corner.Usually these axes are the left side and the bottom of the graph.Each axis will always have a label tells you what each axis measures.
Bar Graphs
A bar graph has two axes and uses bars to show  amounts.In Graph 1,we see that the x-axis showsgrades students earned,and the y-axis shows how many students earned each grade.You can see that 6students  earned an A because the bar for A stretches up to 6on the vertical measurement.There is a lot of information we can get from a simple graph like this (See Graph 1)
Line Graphs
A line graph looks similar to a bar graph,but instead ofbars,it plots points and connects them with a line.It has thesame parts as a bar graph---two labeled axes---and can be read the same way.To read a line graph,it's important to focus on the points of intersection rather than the line segments between the points.This type of graph is most commonly used to show howsomething changes over time.Here is a graph that charts howfar a bird flies during the first five days of its spring migration
(See Graph 2).
The unit of measurement for the x-axis is days.The unit of measurement for the y-axis is kilometers.Thuswe can see that,on the first day,the pipit flew 20kilometers.The line segment goes up between Day 1and Day 2,which means that the bird flew farther on Day 2.If the line segment angled down,as between Day 4and Day 5,it would mean that the bird flew fewer kilometers than the day before.This line graph is a quick,visual way to tell the reader about the bird's migration.
Pie Graphs
A typical pie graph looks like a circular pie.The circle is divided intosections,and each section represents a fraction of the data.The graph iscommonly used to show percentages; the whole pie represents 100percent,so each piece is a fraction of the whole.
A pie graph might include a legend,or it might use icons or labels within each slice.This pie graph shows one month's expenses(See Graph 3).
Food 25Movies12
Clothing 36Savings20
Books $7

A.a(chǎn) guide to the symbols and colors
