第三部分閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
A
As a child growing up, I have very few memories of the times when we gathered as a family to sit down and eat dinner together. I grew up in a home where both of my parents worked. My mother taught in the school, and my father worked during the night at a local chemical plant. There was not much time available for us to sit down to eat dinner together due to my parents’ conflicting(沖突的)work schedules and the afterschool activities in which my sister and I participated.
It wasn’t until I got married and had two children of my own that I began to realize the important of eating dinner together. In my family there are elements that take us away from each other, day in and day out, but as a mother I feel it is my duty to bring us all back together again at the end of the day. In my house, dinner time is a time of thanks. I give thanks for us to share our day, but I am more thankful for the family I share it with. Dinner time is a time for us to share our day, and reflect on our thoughts. Above all it is a time when my family are able to connect with the ones they love.
As I look at the bread basket which sits on my kitchen table, I am reminded of how the basket’s tight weave resembles the tightly woven strands(股)of my family. I believe that through our family dinners, we will not only pass around the meat and potatoes, but we will also pass along virtues that will shape us so that we can forever embrace one another just as the basket embraces the bread.

D
I shall never forget the night, a few years ago, when Marion J. Douglas was a student in one of my adult-education classes. He told us how tragedy had struck at his home, not once, but twice. The first time he had lost his five-year-old daughter. He and his wife thought they couldn’t bear that first loss; but, as he said, “Ten months later, God gave us another little girl and she died in five days.”
This double bereavement was almost too much to bear. “I couldn’t take it,” this father told us. “I couldn’t sleep, eat, rest or relax. My nerves were entirely shaken and my confidence gone.” At last he went to the doctors; one recommended sleeping pills and another recommended a trip, but neither helped. He said, “My body felt as if it was surrounded in a vice(大鉗子), and the jaws of the vice were being drawn tighter and tighter.” The tension of grief(悲傷) — if you have ever been paralyzed(使癱瘓) by sorrow, you know what the meant.
“But thank God, I had one child left — a four-year-old son. He gave me the solution to the problem. One afternoon as I sat around feeling sorry for myself, he asked, ‘Daddy, will you build a boat for me?’ I was in no mood to build a boat; in fact, I was in no mood to do anything. But my son is a persistent fellow! I had to gave in. Building that toy boat took me about three hours. By the time it was finished, I realized that those three hours spent building that boat were first hours of mental relaxation and peace that I had had in months! I realized that it is difficult to worry while you are busy doing something that requires planning and thinking. In my case, building the boat had knocked worry out of the ring. So I determined to keep busy.”
“The following night, I made a list of jobs that ought to be done. Scores of items needed to be repaired. Amazingly, I had made a list of 242 items that needed attention. During the last two years I have completed most of them. I am busy now that I have no time for worry.”
No time for worry! That is exactly what Winston Churchill said when he was working eighteen hours a day at the height of the war. When he was asked if he worried about his huge responsibilities, he said, “I am too busy. I have no time for worry.”

A. he hadn’t been able to spare time to mend them
B. he wanted to kill his free time by repairing them
C. the items had actually been broken and needed attention

Our first winter in Canada was the happiest we have ever experienced. We were living in the countryside then and had just arrived from Hong Kong that autumn. One evening in mid December snow began to fall. When we looked out of the window and saw that it was snowing, we all cheered. It was the first snow we had ever seen and we were excited. We could hardly wait  for the snow to stop so that we could go out lo play. Next morning when we woke up,it was still snowing. We switched on the radio and learned that more than ten inches of snow had fallen during the night and that since the roads were blocked, there would he no school that day. We jumped up and down for joy and beg mother to let us go outside to play in the snow, She said we could go out after breakfast if we dressed warmly and promised to come back as soon as we felt cold. When we went out, the snow had almost stopped. The roads, paths, gardens, and playgrounds were all hidden under a white blanket of soft snow. It was the most beautiful sight we had ever seen. Just then we saw some neighbours, children coming out to play. We ran over to join them. Together we built a snowman and a snow house. The Spring Festival in China
Every year there is a Spring Festival in China. Usually it is held in January or February. Of all our festivals, the Spring Festival is the most important. So before it comes, everyone has to decorate them. The old folk says that everything must be new and clean for the Spring Festival celebrations so that the new year will bring happiness and good luck. We also buy pork, beef, chicken, fruit and many other things. Parents buy new clothes for their children and children may also buy presents for their parents.
The celebration begins on the eve of the lunar new year, and we put up some New year pictures. On the Festival eve, all the family members come back to their hometown. No matter how far away from home a person is, he will always try to get home in time for this big dinner. We often make a special kind of food called “dumplings”. It means “come together”. When we’re enjoying the meal, we give each other the best wishes for the coming year. We sing, dance and play cards.
On the first day of the holiday, we usually stay at home. We get up fairly early and, first thing, exchange New Year greetings. This is a happy moment for the children; they can get some pocket money. And then we shot off firecrackers and fireworks. We enjoy ourselves very much.
On the second and the third days, we go visiting relatives and friends. We sit around chatting and eating sweets and New Year Cakes and all kinds of delicacies. Each family prepares something special. Sometimes we would see some lion and dragon dancing.
The celebration lasts about 15 days. The 15th night of the first moon in called the Lantern Festival. This is the day when we young people go out to enjoy ourselves, and sometimes we dance folk dances far into the night.
