When I was a baby, I entertained you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How could you?"---but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend.

Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words that swept over my mind.

Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (圍欄), I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream.

My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.

Regularly staying late at the office significantly increases the risk of having a stroke or heart attack, researchers have found, working just an hour extra each day pushes up stroke risk by 10 per cent, according to a huge review of working patterns. And people who work an extra three hours a day--or 55 hours a week--are 33 per cent more likely to have a stroke, the scientists found.

The research, published in the Lancet medical journal, is based on health records of more than 500, 000 people across Europe, the US and Australia.

Scientists led by University College London warned that people who work longer hours tend to do less exercise, sit at a computer for hours at a time and drink more than people with a better work-life balance. Repeated stress may also be to blame for greater health problems, the scientists think.

They looked at the combined result of 17 previous studies, in which 529, 000 people were tracked over an average of seven years.

Experts stressed that the study had only found a link between hours worked and heart problems---it had not proved what had actually caused each death. But they warned people to take note of the findings.

Dr Tim Chico, consultant cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said “For many people, reducing their working hours would be difficult or impossible, and this study does not show that it would reduce the risk of stroke." Most of us could reduce the amount of time we spend sitting down, increase our physical activity and improve our diet while working and this might be more important the more time we spend at work.

1.Which areas are involved in the research?

A. The US, Australia and Russia.

B. Japan, Britain and China.

C. China, Russia and Japan.

D. Europe, the US and Australia.

2.Which factor is NOT the cause of the higher risk of health problems?

A. Excessive drinking. B. A healthy diet.

C. Repeated stress. D. Lack of exercise

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. People who work longer are less likely to suffer a stroke.

B. All the deaths are caused by working long hours.

C. The research was based on the tracking of over 500, 000 people.

D. Reduced working hours will surely decrease the risk of stroke.

4.Where is this passage probably taken from?

A. A news report.

B. A science magazine.

C. A psychological journal.

D. A hospital introduction.

Finally, the long-awaited flying car is almost here.

AeroMobil, a Slovakian company, plans to start selling its creation, the AeroMobil3. 0, in 2017. The company claims on its site that the vehicle “transforms in seconds from an automobile to an airplane" by using “existing infrastructure created for automobiles and planes."The vehicle is petrol-powered and has wings that fold, which allows it to be parked like a car, though it is nearly 20 feet long.

The company's website features a video where the AeroMobil 3. 0 drives out of a hangar (飛 機(jī)棚 )and goes down a highway, sharing the road with ordinary cars until it arrives at an airstrip. The car then unfolds its wings and takes off from a stretch of grass, rather than a paved tarmac (柏油路面), and flies through the air like any other small airplane.

AeroMobil spokesman Stefan Vadocz said his company hasn't decided on an exact price because it's not ready yet."The prototype is a work in progress," he said in an email. But he said the price would be several hundreds of thousands of euros---somewhere in between a sports car and a light sports aircraft.

The vehicle seats two people---the pilot and a passenger---and its single propeller (螺旋槳) is located at the rear of the plane. The company said the car's top speed on the road is at least 99 mph and while flying it is at least 124 mph. It can fly for 435 miles before running out of fuel. It has a steel framework and carbon coating and is powered by a Rotax 912, a four-cylinder (氣缸) aircraft engine from BRP of Austria.

Flying cars aren't exactly new. The concept has been around since long before The Jetsons popularized the idea in the 1960s. It has been a regular topic in Popular Science ever since World War I ace, Eddie Rickenbacker, wrote about it in 1924.

But getting a practical, reliable flying car off the ground has been a serious challenge.

Glenn Curtiss discovered this in 1918 when he developed the Curtiss Autoplane. It turned out to be more of a hopper than a flyer, so it failed to become popular with the public.

1.What allows the AeroMobil3. 0 to be parked as a car?

A. Its steel framework and folding wings.

B. Its petrol-powered engine and folding wings.

C. Its 99mph top speed and petrol-powered engine.

D. Its ordinary car engine and folding wings.

2.What is the biggest difference between the AeroMobil 3. 0 and other airplanes?

A. It is powered by aircraft fuel.

B. It can fly as fast as airplanes.

C. It has a propeller.

D. It can take off from a stretch of grass.

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The AeroMobil3. 0's price will fall very soon.

B. The design work on the AeroMobil 3. 0 is still in progress.

C. The price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 will be higher than a light sports aircraft.

D. The price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 will be the same as a sports car.

4.What is the main purpose of the fifth paragraph?

A. To describe some of the features of the AeroMobil3. 0.

B. To explain why the AeroMobil3. 0 is better than an airplane.

C. To explain the difference between the AeroMobil3. 0 and other airplanes.

D. To explain why the price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 is high.

Norway — Ten Chinese college students arrived at the country’s Arctic(北極的) research base, the Yellow River Station, on Friday.

On Saturday, the students are expected to witness the end of four months of darkness in the area, as the sun makes a rare appearance.

During their four-day stay at the station, the students will meet and learn from some of China’s leading polar researchers. They were welcomed at the station yesterday by its director, He Jianfeng, who is an expert on marine micro-ecosystems.

The students will also visit the German and Norwegian stations and meet researchers there.
