11.As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less?If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain?Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it.Later, the second group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夾).Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called"transactive memory (交互記憶)".
According to Sparrow,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is,people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

6.When someone says,"Well,I guess I'll have to go to face the music,"It doesn't mean he is planning to go to a concert.It is something far less pleasant,like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that,and why you did not do this or that.Sour (刺耳)music,indeed,but it has to be faced.
The phrase"to face the music"is familiar to every American,young and old.It is at least 100years old.Where did the expression come from?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper.He said-in 1851-that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage.After they got their clue(暗示)to go on,they often said,"It's time to go to face the music."And that is exactly what they did-face the orchestra which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly,especially if he forgot his lines.But he had to go out.
So,"to face the music"came to mean:having to go through something,no matter how unpleasant the experience might be,because you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army.Men had to face inspection(檢閱)by their leader.The soldiers worried about how well they looked.Was their equipment clean-shiny enough to pass inspection?Still,the men had to go out,and face the music of the band,as well as the inspection.What else could they do?

D.the audience might be mostly his friends
27."To face the music"is also used to mean that soldiers were not willingB.
A.to be examined about their equipment
B.to be inspected by their leader

2."Hey!"the voice called from behind me."Are you a girl or a duck?"I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the meangirl,Betsy  I ran to my class,causing my slight limp(跛行) to become even more apparent.Already,I could see that things would be different here.At my old school,I had a group of friends to protect me.However,in this new school,I was on my own.I took my place in the first row of desks and I was grateful for alphabetic seating.My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy's last name came at the end.As the weeks went on,though,I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class.Whenever Betsy made one of her remarks, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.
Still,I hated that I didn't walk like everyone else.I didn't like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn't like getting picked last for teams in gym class.Mostly,though,I really hated it when people like Betsy made negative remarks about how I walked.
One day, our teacher asked us to change seats."Class,"our teacher addressed us one morning,"you've been in the same seats for a full semester and you've become friendly with the students around you. Now it's time to change seats and make some new friends."The class let out a collective moan(抱怨).As she assigned the new seating,F(xiàn)ran,Lisa,and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called.We didn't want to be separated.And we especially didn't want to sit anywhere near Betsy.Finally,Betsy sat directly behind me.
I knew this wasn't going to be good and I soon discovered I was right.Betsy often leaned into my back:"Quack,quack!"When I ignored her,she kicked my seat.When that didn't work,she poked(戳)me.This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school.I told Mom what had happened at school.
