根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從下框的A~F選項(xiàng)中選出能概括每一段主題的最佳選項(xiàng),選項(xiàng)中有一項(xiàng)為多余項(xiàng)。
A.Suggestions on having interviews
B. Be yourself
C. Listen before talking
D. Use your eyes and smile
E. Focus your energy
F. Qualities of good communication
1.________
Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your
good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.
2. ________
Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change
character from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're having a conversation with their
close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their
whole being.
3. ________
Secondly, whether you're talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them.
Don't break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, and then look
directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The
best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not force.
4. ________
You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can't learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don't immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop
for a second. Absorb what's going on. What's the mood of the others-are they down, up, happy,
expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what's
happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.
5. ________
How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the
meeting-yours and the other's. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus
on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience
and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can't
question your belief.

Every kid wishes to be an adult. But now as grown-ups, some adults find they cannot leave childhood
behind. They become "kidults" (kid+adult). Being a kidult has become a lifestyle-choice among young people
across Asia. Some kidults collect toys they once played with. Hello Kitty, Garfield, and Snoopy have many
adult fans around the world. It is not unusual to see a 20-something woman with a big, Garfield-shaped
cushion on her sofa or a Hello Kitty mobile phone accessory.
Other kidults still enjoy children's stories and fairy tales. For example, Bloomsbury even published the
Harry Potter novels with an adult cover. That way, no one else on the subway will know that an adult is
actually reading a children's book!
"Kidults can be like vitamins to society. Adults who value their childhood and hold on to pure, child-like
emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society," said Lee Sojung, professor of Foreign Studies at
Hankuk University (韓國(guó)外國(guó)語大學(xué)). He added that kidult culture may fill the generation gap between adults
and kids. It could give children and their parents books, movies, and cartoon shows to enjoy together. He
may be right.
Tim Greenhalgh, a professor, explained that some kidults just refuse to grow up. They value childhood
because life in a busy and stressful city frightens them. Kidults would like to forget their age and openly
show their fear of society and adulthood.
1. We can infer from the article that _____.
A. Kidults like to have vitamins very much
B. Kidults miss their childhood so much that they can't give up their toys
C. Bloomsbury knows some kidults don't want people to know that they are kidults
D. Some toys are so interesting that even adults like them very much
2. According to the author, being a kidult is good in some way except that _____.
A. it can help kidults feel relaxed
B. it is helpful to solve some social problems
C. it can make people loyal to one's parents
D it can improve the relationship between parents and their kids
3. According to the writer, _____.
A. our society is very dull
B. kidults have mental problems
C. being a kidult is nothing wrong
D. some people can never grow up

Do you always forget where you placed your keys or your purse? What was the name of the movie
you saw last week? The major cause of your forgetfulness may be linked to what you store in your body,
not in your short-term memory bank.
Tests continue to show that people with enough Vitamin B-2 do well in memory exams. The "B"
could stand for "brain", if you're one of many with limited instant recall. And the number one source of
that vitamin is sunflower seeds.
Even when you're sleeping or relaxing, your brain is still at work. Although it makes up just two
percent of your total body weight, it uses up to 30 % of the calories you take in each day. For it to work
properly, it must be fed. Even if you're not a breakfast eater, that meal is the best way to prepare your
brain for the day. A quick and easy English muffin with peanut and butter in it, a glass of milk, and an
orange, might be what your brain may be asking you the first thing in the morning when you feel your
head is in a fog. Having sunflower seeds and fruit between meals adds more muscle to that hungry,
demanding organ. Vitamin B-1 also helps the memory, and that is found in eggs, meats and nuts. In
Chinese culture, walnuts (核桃) are known as the fruit for a long life because it is believed that they feed
both the kidneys and the brain. And according to Chinese culture, if you keep those two important organs
in good working order, you'll live longer.
However forgetful you are, just keep in mind the letter "B", which will help you to "bear in mind
almost everything" even on those days when life's challenges are sending you in a billion directions.

1. The underlined word "muffin" in the third paragraph probably means_________.

A. menu
B. dinner
C. calorie
D. cookie

2. In the passage, Chinese culture is mentioned to____________.

A. support the idea of long life
B. show the importance of vitamin B-1
C. warn the readers of two organs
D. remind us of walnuts and sunflower seeds

3. What can we conclude from the passage?

A. What we eat seems more important than what we learn in terms of memory.
B. Two percent of our brain is still active when we are sleeping or relaxing.
C. It doesn't make much difference to our brain whether we have breakfast or not.
D. Life's challenges have no effect on our memory, if dealt with in a proper way.

4. The best title for the passage could be_______________.

A. Human of Memory Loss
B. Vitamin B-2 and Memory
C. Forgetful? But not Brain
D. Chinese Culture of Long Life

computer and connected me the World Wide Web.
I've always felt like a master(主人) of the Internet world. AOL Instant Messaging, MSN, Gmail,
Facebook. Myspace-I've got it all under control. I thought there was nothing more to it besides checking my e-mail and wasting my time, until I was introduced to electronic commerce(e-commerce): business on
the Internet.

envelopes had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister; and we all know little sisters should never be getting more mail than their elders!
"Oh, it's the things I ordered online!" she answered. I watched speechlessly as she opened them. There was no way our parents were letting her spend that much money- online or off!
"How much did all of this coat?"
"Oh, only about $15 in all!" She said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It's way better than
going to the mall."
I felt as if there had been a store right in my backyard that I had never walked into! That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for my summer course online for 10 percent of the publishing price. A few

I travel a lot, and I find out different "styles" (風(fēng)格) of directions every time I ask "How can I get to the
post office?"
Foreign tourists are often confused (困惑) in Japan because most streets there don't have names; in Japan,
people use landmarks (地標(biāo)) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to
travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office
is across from the bus stop."
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains,
so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks,
people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, "Go north two
miles. Turn east, and then go another mile."
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not
miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here." You
say, "Yes, but how many miles away is it?" They don't know.
It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a
situation? A new Yorker might say, "Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't
know." People in Yucatan believe that "I don't know" is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong
one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
1. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually _____.
A. describe the place carefully
B. show him a map of the place
C. tell him the names of the streets
D. refer to recognizable buildings and places
2. What is the place where people measure distance in time?
A. New York.
B. Los Angeles.
C. Kansas.
D. Iowa.
3. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer _____ .
A. in order to save time
B. as a test
C. so as to be polite
D. for fun
4. Which sentence is true according to the text?
A. There is no street names in Japan.
B. There is no landmarks in the countryside of American.
C. People in Yucatan always give wrong answers when asked the way.
D. People in Los Angeles measure distance in time, not miles when asked the way.
5. What can we infer from the text?
A. It's important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
B. It's useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
C. People have similar understandings of politeness.
D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feeling of happiness. Some have put their heart and
efforts into their work.Too many turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for
it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic (異國(guó)的) vacation homes and other popular "toys". Most of
their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the
journey of finding it.I have heard many people say that, "I'll be happy when I get my new promotion."
or "I'll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds." It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a
"response" to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus (激勵(lì)) and response.Today, some people think that an expensive
car is a stimulus.Happiness is a response.A great paying job is a stimulus.Happiness is a response.This
belief leaves us thinking and feeling, "I'll be happy when..."
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus and
response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more
success in our work. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy
good health.Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make in daily life. For unknown reasons to me, many choose to
be upset and angry most of the time.Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want-we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy.

1. From the second paragraph, we know to many people ________.

A. they are not happy when they work hard
B. they are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C. they are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
D. they all desire exotic vacation homes

2. Generally speaking, most people feel happy because ________.

A. they think happiness is rooted in their deep hearts
B. they get what they want to have
C. they get a great paying job
D. they get an expensive car

3. In the author's opinion, which of the following is the most important if you want to be happy?

A. Losing weight.
B. An expensive car.
C. Success in work.
D. Feeling happy.

Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject: Slimming down classics?
Mr.Handsome  2012212 6:34 AM Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cutdown classics (經(jīng)典著作), is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L. Tolstoy, M. Mitchell and C. Bronte. Now, each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages percent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads "in half the time", will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.
Mr.Edwards
2012212
9:40 AM

Well, I'm the publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention, Mr.Handsome. I must say, the idea developed from a game of "shame" in my office. Each of us was required to confess (承認(rèn)) to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping (跳讀) Jane Eyre.We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.    As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it's not as if we're withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them.
Ms.Weir

I'm the director of the online book club www.lovereading.co.uk.
Mr.Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a_breath_of_fresh_air.I'm guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it's just so long.I'd much rather read two 300page books than one 600page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics

I'm from the London independent bookshop Corckatt & Powell.
In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I'm afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don't have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don't read a shortened version and kid yourself it's the real thing.

A. opposes the reading of original classics
B. is embarrassed for cutting down classics
C. thinks cutdown classics have a bright future
D. is cautious in its decision to cut down classics

2. In Mr.Edwards' opinion, Orion Group is shortening classics to ________.

A. make them easier to read
B. meet a large demand in the market
  C. increase the sales of literary books
D. compete with their original versions
