Whether it's a carol(圣誕頌歌) service or an evening of karaoke down the pub, many people will
enjoy a good old singsong this Christmas. Singing aloud will not just lift the spirits-it's good for your
physical health as well. Filling the lungs with air, increasing the heart rate and getting blood pumping
round the body faster can all help our physical health.
For the past few years Heart Research UK has been running a Christmas campaign aimed at getting
people singing, simply for the benefit it can bring. The organizer of the campaign says singing is a safe,
simple and social activity that everyone can enjoy. "Singing is linked to long life, stress reduction, and
general health protection. It also brings a great amount of happiness. It is impossible to sing well with a
long face because it affects your pitch (音高). "
Professor Graham Welch, who leads the International Music Education Research Centre at the
University of London, has spent more than 30 years studying the effects of singing. He says that singing
is a form of exercise. It means we're also having a strong aerobic activity (有氧運動) when we're
singing, which results in increasing the feeling of pleasure while decreasing that of stress.
"And communal singinglike in a singing group, a church service or even a singsong in the pubhelps
improve our sense of selfrespect. It increases our sense of satisfaction with ourselves, a greater sense
of feeling included. "
Helen Astrid, a singing teacher, also sees the great effects that singing brings. "It lifts us up on a
spiritual level, it helps our selfrespect, and it's great for all ages from small kids to grannies-you can
have a good sing and let_your_hair_down. "
But she warns people not to have too many beers or glasses of wine, though a glass may help them
gather courage before taking to the stage during the holidays.

Creativity is the ability to create inventions, solve problems or create a work of art using
an unusual or innovative(革新的)approach.Creativity is also a skill in high demand in business
and in many other forms of employment. All progress is the result of some sort of creative
act. Thus someone who can produce such acts on a consistent basis is a valuable addition
to any undertaking.
Research has shown that too much passive media consumption at a young age prevents
the development of creativity. You might think that creativity is a result of high intelligence,
but that is not the case.Sure,it does not hurt to be smart, but you can be a smart robot
without being able to imagine new ways of doing things. On the other hand it's common
knowledge that traveling increases your ability to think"outside the box",because you
experience a lot of new things and different ways of doing things when you witness how
people from other cultures live.
So what is the difference between surfing the web and watching TV and traveling?
Watching TV is very passive and your brain simply discards most of it.And it is as if it
has become cluttered(凌亂的)with useless information that it cannot really process.
When you are doing things actively,by being there,by having a heightened sense of
alert,very positive things happen.For example,remember your last trip.Let's say you've
been to Tokyo. For most nonJapanese the experience of being in the city is very impressive.
Everything is huge. There are lots of people and technology is everywhere.Because the city
is new for you, your brain switches in"possibly dangerous"mode. You notice much more,
even tiny details.
Now that your mind is open it also stores the information better, because of your aroused
state. All your input is stored with stronger emotions and is thus easier to recall later. That's
why you should travel or simply go to new places in your town.Actively observe how you
feel and then try to reproduce the feeling at a familiar place. This way you will learn to see
things with the eyes of a traveler.
1.What do we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Creativity is an important characteristic for business people.
B.Creativity is used just to create inventions or solve problems.
C.A creative personality is only useful in art.
D.Creativity isn't necessarily important for all people.
2.What can be inferred about creativity from the passage?
A.It belongs to people with great intelligence.
B.Experiencing new things is helpful for you to develop it.
C.It means people know about others who live in different cultures.
D.It is like a clever robot that can do many things.
3.Which of the following words in the passage has the opposite meaning to the underlined word "discards" in Paragraph 3?
A.Prevents
B.Increases.
C.Switches.
D.Stores.
4.An example of a trip to Tokyo is given in Paragraph 4 to show that________.
A.the Japanese are one of the intelligent peoples
B.traveling is positive but sometimes dangerous
C.positive things happen while people are traveling abroad
D.most nonJapanese are curious about Tokyo
5.Which of the following statements does the author agree with?
A.Traveling abroad is the only way to enrich people's knowledge.
B.Traveling is likely to arouse people's creativity.
C.Surfing the web is good for developing creativity.
D.Watching TV is an active way of gaining information.

means calling time out for family dinners can be difficult for the Yowler family of Burlington.
They try to squeeze them in two to three times a week.
"Today, everybody lives such busy lives, and dinner time is just a good time to catch up
with what everybody's doing," says the boys' father,David Yowler.
"It's really important," his wife,Suzanne, says,"We always did it when I was a kid.You
never know what kids might tell us.They are not very ready to give information at this age,
so it's nice to get little interesting things once in a while."
Indeed, the family dinner might be more important than many people realize."Surveys
have found that the more often children have dinners with their parents, the less likely they
are to smoke, drink or use drugs, and that parental engagement fostered around the dinner
table is one of the most powerful tools to help parents raise healthy, drugfree children," says
a report.
Austin Yowler,an eighthgrader, says,"it's nice to just sit down with everybody once in a
while." But he adds that in the evenings he doesn't have football,"I just like to go and hang
out with my friends.Having to come home in the middle of that is just kind of..." His facial
expression finishes the thought.

Who's in control of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us, it's other
people-society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating
when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and
feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other
people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone
else's opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation."
So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling
like a drug. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives,
failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep
getting their fix (一劑毒品). We worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.
But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom to be
ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda,
and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you.
Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone
has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to
please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way-make a conscious decision to stop
caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values-not values
imposed (強加) from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven
by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more
authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.
1. What Oscar Wilde says implies that________.
A. we have thoughts similar to those of others
B. most people have a variety of thoughts
C. most people's thoughts are controlled by others
D. other people's thoughts are more important
2. What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph?
A. We may lose ourselves to please others.
B. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.
C. We need to pay for what we want to get.
D. The price of taking drugs is freedom.
3. In order to live a happy, effective and purposeful life, we should________.
A. care about others' opinions and change opinions all the time
B. guide ourselves by means of values from the outside
C. persuade others to accept our opinions
D. stick to our own values
4. It can be concluded from the passage that________.
A. we shouldn't care about what others think
B. it's better to do what we like
C. we shouldn't change our own opinions
D. it's important to accept others' opinions

"BANG!" the door caused a reverberation (回聲). It was just standing there, with father standing on
one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger. "Never set foot in this house again!" stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather
sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.
But now … I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We
differ in our ways of thinking. He always put his opinions and codes of behavior on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels
like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived ,I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: "Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?" In fact, it was nothing.
Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never
had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can't stand his outrageous(蠻橫的)words: "I
can't throw you away, let alone these old papers?"
All the lights were off except father's. Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking(用……蓋住) me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do
has become his second nature.
The light was still on. "Am I wrong?" I whispered, maybe…ith the key in hand, I was as nervous as I
had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my
cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love-it's
second to none.

Millions of people around the world cook their food over a smoky fire every day.It is often difficult to
find wood for the fire.People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun.
Solar cookers, or ovens, have been used for centuries.A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in
1767.Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world.People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms.
There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that
shines or reflects sunlight into the box.Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker.A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food.
The second kind of solar oven is a panel cooker. It includes several flat walls, or panels, that directly
reflect the sun's light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy.People can build panel cookers with very few supplies quickly. They do not cost much.In Kenya,
for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars.
The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic (拋物線的) cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight
directly into the bottom of the oven.Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are
hard to make. They must be reaimed often to follow the sun.Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and
eye injuries if they are not used correctly.
You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy paper. They will not catch fire.Paper burns at two
hundred thirtytwo degrees Celsius.A solar cooker never gets that hot.Solar ovens cook food at low
temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other
things.

There are 70,000 pubs in England and Wales have several thousand more in Scotland.
Every country has its drinking shop, but none has an institution quite like the British pub.
The most important feature of a good pub (which modern buildings hardly ever achieve) is
a feeling of something private. It must have nooks and crannies, corners and snugs, where
conversations and assignations can take place without the whole world listening in.
Most pubs have at least two separate bars. The "public bar" which is for ordinary and
women is the basic drinking shop. The "lounge bar" (or saloon bar) which is for traveling
salesmen and "ladies" probably has a carpet on the floor and rather more comfortable
decoration. There may be a difference of a few pence in the drink prices, although all pubs
are required by law to put their price lists easily seen on display.
Pubs have been changing over the past few decades. More and more of them sell good,
inexpensive food and are competing strongly with restaurants. Tea and coffee are often on
offer and children are being made more welcome. The law says that no one under 14 may
enter a pub, and between 14 and 18 they must be accompanied by an adult and may not
buy or consume alcoholic drink. In reality some pubs, especially in country districts, welcome
whole families. Some set aside special rooms for children and where there are gardens they
are almost always welcome.
The most basic change, however, came about in the 1938 licensing laws which allowed
pubs in England and Wales to open not just at lunch time and in the evening, but all day, from
11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Scottish laws already permitted all day opening.)
1. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Pubs' history
B. Pubs in Britain
C. Changes of pubs
D. Features of a good pub
2. According to the British people, what kind of pub is a good one?
A. The one with all day opening time.
B. The one with good and inexpensive food.
C. The one with all kinds of people enjoying themselves.
D. The one with different parts where people can have a private conversation.

3. In paragraph 4, we can learn that .

A. pubs allow people above 14 to enter alone
B. pubs never allow people under 18 to enter
C. pubs don't sell more expensive food than restaurants
D. pubs often sell alcoholic drinks as well as tea and coffee
4. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. The law requires all the pubs have slightly different prices of drinks.
B. Ordinary people and women are often having fun in the "public pub".
C. In some country pubs, children accompanied by their parents are always welcome.
D. Scottish laws allow pubs to open not just at lunch time and in the evening, but all day.

閱讀理解。

Pets provide an unconditional love that requires very little on the part of the human.
Animals are so special to those of us who love them. We miss them when they are no
longer with us. We grieve (哀悼) for them in ways which are just the same as grieving for
a human loved one.
Whether the end comes through old age, illness, or sudden death, the death of a pet can
cause enormous feelings of sorrow, guilt, and loneliness for children and adults alike, as the
animal was considered a family member, a child's favoured playmate, or an older person's
loyal and faithful companion.
Some people don't want a pet because they do die! It's understandable to be unwilling
to expose yourself to death but, at the same time, we become immeasurably more human
because our animals die
. When we live with animals we're more in step with the rhythms
of the planet from day to night and from season to season because our companions make
us more aware of the changes around us. Our companion animals teach us about the simple
gifts of a beautiful day, a good meal and a gentle touch.
The death of a pet can make us struggle with our belief structure-a natural part of the
grieving period. Whether grieving an animal or human, we question our beliefs and many
people find their belief structure becomes stronger when they ask themselves hard questions.
Others find a new way of acceptance.
And we learn from our animals. Animals aren't afraid to die; they show us that the end
of life can be faced without fear. They can teach us to accept death as an opening for love
and wonder.
Allow yourself to grieve in whatever way is appropriate for you. The loss of a pet is real
grief and causes us to travel through the stages of grief-denial, anger, depression, guilt, and
acceptance. These stages must be lived through for the mourning to allow full healing.

1. According to the passage, the reason why some people don't want a pet may be that .
A. animals may change our belief structure
B. animals are so special for those who love them
C. pets can never escape from death which makes people sad
D. pets only provide people with love but never ask for return
2. The underlined sentence in paragraph 4 probably means .
A. the animals' death is unacceptable for their owners
B. the animals' death may arouse their true feelings inside
C. the animals' death may expose people to the changes in life
D. the animals' death is more understandable than human's death
3. According to the passage, we can infer that .
