                                                  Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you're going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.      1
Here is the challenge:Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them
from the dangers in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses.
Sometimes conflicts can't be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful
relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry.
A good time to talk is when you're all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into
an argument, you'd better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation-for now.     2      Listen  to
what  your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you're listening.     3
Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about
each others' feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.
4   How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you're going to do. Some
t eens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget
that parents are more than rulemakers-they're interesting people who like to watch movies and go
shopping-just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be
rocky?    5   You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.
Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change
theirs.

A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if    you're not on the same page.
B. You can pick it up again when everyone's more relaxed.
C. And then you'll be able to accept what your parents say.
D. Faced with the challenge, children don't know what to do.
E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents
     believe  in you.
F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
G. You may consider seeking outside help

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is
an occasion(時候)which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and
children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose
helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their
parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected, he developed in his mind the
idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of
his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called "Sweetest
Day". Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group's religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a
reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the
opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive way.
1. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Sweetest Day is a day to make others happy.
B. Sweetest Day is just an occasion to care about disabled people.
C. Sweetest Day is an occasion for lovers to express love.
D. Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in October.
2. What is Cleveland?
A. An island. B. A country.
C. A village in England.
D. A city in America.
3. What do most people usually do to show their care to others according to the passage?
A. They give money.
B. They give gifts.
C. They send regards.
D. They offer help.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive
people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations.
Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive
defendants(被告).But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder,it is harmful
to a woman.
Handsome male executives were thought as having more integrity than plainer men;effort and
ability were thought to account for their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones their
success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable
than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes
was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of attractive overnight
successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is thought to be more feminine
and an attractive man more masculine(有男子氣概的)than the less attractive ones. Thus,an attractive
woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine
position appears to lack the"masculine"qualities required.
This is true even in politics."When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women
differently,"says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on
political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one
of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were
of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote
for them.
The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men,but the women who had
been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.
1.The underlined word "liability"(in Para.1)most probably means "________".
A.misfortune
B.instability
C.disadvantage
D.burden
2.In traditionally female jobs,attractiveness________.
A.reinforces(加強)the feminine qualities required
B.makes women look more honest and capable
C.is of primary importance to women
D.often enables women to succeed quickly
3.Bowman's experiment reveals that when it comes to politics,attractiveness________.
A.turns out to be an obstacle to men
B.a(chǎn)ffects men and women alike
C.has as little effect on men as on women
D.is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women
4.It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often________.
A.practical
B.prejudiced
C.oldfashioned
D.pessimistic
5.The author writes this passage to________.
A.demand equal rights for women
B.emphasize the importance of appearance
C.discuss the negative aspects of being attractive
D.give advice to jobseekers who are attractive

Are you tired of the same old schedule on Mother's Day? Well, here are some new ideas to help you enjoy
that special day with your mother.
While it seems almost a tradition to take your mother out for dinner on Mother's Day, perhaps this year
you could try something else. You could invite her to a restaurant before or after the actual day. This way you
don't have to fight the crowds, and the prices will be lower.
Take your mother out for a picnic lunch if the weather is nice. You and she can enjoy the cool breeze under
the shade of a tree while having a nice meal that you have made for her. Be sure to pack some of her favorite
foods.
Another idea would be to invite your mother to go bowling (打保齡球). Even if she has never bowled in
her life, trying something new is always interesting.
You could treat her to a movie she is dying to see, and make sure you buy her all the popcorn and candies
she can eat. If you are a male, the chances are you won't like the movie she wants to see, so instead you could
go to the mall and get your picture taken with your mother, which she can proudly display in her house.
Take her to a spa on Mother's Day. She has been working so hard and needs a way to release her stress.
If she doesn't want to go to a spa, buy her special soaps and oils so she can relax herself in her own tub.
There are various types of soaps and oils with delicious flavors available. You could also buy her some
scented (芬芳的) candles that she could light by her tub to make the atmosphere peaceful.
No matter what you choose, make sure you do something special for the woman who took care of you
for so long.

Going on a date can be a nightmare for the best of us. But now a pair of 'social X-Ray' glasses
promises to tell you exactly what the other person is thinking-and when you should stop talking.
The glasses have a built-in camera which monitors the other person's facial expressions and matches
them up with 24 known features which convey emotions. It will then tell the individual via an earpiece and
lights on the glasses what their date is thinking. In a traffic light-style system, a red light means negative,
yellow means they are a bit interested and green means your date is happy. The glasses are under
development at present by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab.
They say that wearing them during a conversation with another person is like having an 'extra sense'
that they are bored or losing interest.
The eyewear was developed for people suffering from autism (孤獨癥) who have much difficulty
interacting with others, but now the team behind it has seen wider applications. It works thanks to a
camera the size of a grain of rice which is put into the glasses frame and connected via a wire to a small
computer which can be attached to the user's body. The camera monitors how long and how often 24
'feature points' appear on the subject's faces which are then analyzed by software developed by the MIT
team.
This data is then compared with a bank of expressions and the computer tells the wearer what is
going on via the earpiece and the traffic light system.
So far the glasses are still a job in progress and have been accurate just 64 per cent of the time, a
figure which is expected to improve with further tests.

A. going on a date can be a nightmare for the best of us
B. scientists are showing more and more concern to people suffering from autism
C. the glasses will be more and more popular

A. The glasses were initially intended for helping people going on a date.
B. The glasses are widely used and have achieved great success.
C. The built-in camera in the glasses is of great importance.

For thousands of years, people have been debating the meaning of happiness and how to find it. From
the ancient Greeks and Romans to current day writers and professors, the debate about happiness
continues. hat makes some happy? In what parts of the world are people the happiest? Why even study
happiness? The Greek philosopher Aristotle said that a person's highest happiness comes from the use of
his or her intelligence. Religious books such as the Koran and Bible discuss faith as a form of happiness.
The British scientist Charles Darwin believed that all species were formed in a way so as to enjoy
happiness. People throughout history may have had different ideas about happiness. But today, many
people are still searching for its meaning.
How do you study something like happiness? You could start with the World Database of Happiness at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This set of information includes how to define and
measure happiness. Some findings are not surprising. For example, the database suggests that married
people are happier than single people. Peoplewho like to be with other people are happier than unsocial
people. But other findings are less expected: People with children are equally happy as couples without
children. And wealthier people are only a little happier than poorer people.
Positive psychology is the new term for a method of scientific study that tries to examine the things that make life worth living instead of life's problems. Traditional psychology generally studies negative situations like mental suffering and sickness. But positive psychology aims to study the strengths that allow people
and communities to do well. Thereis also an increasing amount of medical research on the physical qualities of happiness. Doctors can now look at happiness at work in a person's brain using a method called
magnetic resonance imaging (核磁共振成像),or MRI. For example,an MRI can show how one area of a person's brain activates when he or she is shown happy pictures. A different area of the brain becomes
active when the person sees pictures of terrible subjects.
1. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. People are searching for the meaning of happiness.
B. Happiness is an everlasting topic for discussion.

D. People have begun to realize the importance of understanding happiness.
2. The Bible tells us happiness comes from ________.
A. the application of one's intelligence
B. the strong belief in religion
C. a certain degree of good faith
D. the trust in one's ability
3. The findings of the database imply that couples without children are ________.
A. as happy as people with children
B. less happy than people with children
C. happier than unsocial people
D. a little happier than wealthier people
4. As an approach of scientific study, positive psychology focuses on ________.
A. mental suffering

5. MRI is used in the study of happiness in order to ________.
A. find out the physical quantities of happiness
B. look at the images formed in people's brain

The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Aron Presley was born on 8 January 1935 in Tupelo. His talent in
singing did not come up as a surprise, as he had a good voice right from his childhood. When Elvis was
ten years old, he participated in a Talent Contest at Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show and won
a prize for the song he sang.
When Elvis was 13 years old, his family moved to Tennessee. To support himself and his father, Elvis
took on a job as a truck driver. A disc containing two ballads (民歌) that Elvis had recorded for his
mother as a birthday gift was first heard by Sun Studio's president Sam Phillips. After listening to Elvis,
Sam made Elvis an offer and that was the birth of a new singing sensation (鼓動的人物); a new
superstar was born. In 1954 his first record was released from Sun Studio.
In 1955, Elvis singed a $35,000 recording contract with RCA Victor (through Thomas Parker), who

once again started working with his old band and gave some more smashing (極好的) hits to the world.
In 1972, he released his last top-ten single Burning Love.
