[1] Imagine walking up to a world where China is the
world's leading superpower, astronauts are busy walking on
Mars and a brand new political party is ruling the UK? Well,
this could be the reality in 13 years if some of the predictions of
100,000 Britons are correct.
[2] The survey asked the people of the UK how they
pictured the world in 2025.
[3] Nearly half believe Prince William will be crowned
King of England instead of Prince Charles although one in six
think the monarchy ( 君主制度) will have been abolished. A
quarter of those surveyed believe a new party will form the
government in 2025, although the same number of people think
that labour will be back in power.
[4] On the world stage 60 per cent think China is set to
become the world's leading superpower, while a third think
Great Britain will be made up of four self-governed countries.
[5] Meanwhile technology will have come on in leaps and

                             Stop  Spam
When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I
received communications only from family, friends, and
colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I
have an endless series of advertisements and other
correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mail
to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make
spamming(發(fā)送垃圾郵件)a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam,
the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs
allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost
instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell
their products,  individual(個人的) e-mail boxes are often
flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e-mail
if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as
well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can
shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on
e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.
Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications
networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate
effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and
requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These
computer problems raise production costs of companies, which
are, in the end, passes on to the consumer.
For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to
legislate(立法) against spam. Spammers should be fined,  and
perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail
is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate
conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

A. Companies rely on e-mail for communications.
B. More people in the world communicate by e-mail.

[1]Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early
in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact,
you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However,
believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows
fear of water,  a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,
to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can
sometimes be very dangerous.
[2]To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should
learn ____: butterfly,  backstroke,  breaststroke,  and crawl. I
feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the
others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally,
without any training.
[3]In swimming, there are certain rules every swimmer should
follow :
      (1) Never swim alone!  No matter how good you are in the
water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by
yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into

If you haven't heard or seen anything about Road Rage in the last few months, you've probably been
avoiding the media. There have been countless stories about this new and scary phenomenon, considered
a type of aggressive driving. You have most likely encountered aggressive driving or
Road Rage recently if you drive at all.
While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as
disturbing. For instance, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, 41,907
people died on the highway last year. Of those deaths, the agency estimates that  about two-thirds were
caused at least in part by aggressive driving behavior.
Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now, and why is it something that seemed
almost nonexistent a few short years ago? Experts have several theories, and all are probably
partially correct. One suggestion is sheer overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on
theroads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35
percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars
in the same amount of space; and the problem is magnified in urban areas. Also, people have less time
and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities into the day,
stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors,
when combined in certain situations, can spell Road Rage.
You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be
surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a slower driver, sounded the horn long
and hard at another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any
of these situations, watch out!
Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you,  there are
things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are susceptible(easily influenced) to Road Rage, the
key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the  target of another driver's rage, do
everything possible to get away from the other driver safely,  including avoiding eye contact and getting
out of their way.
1. The first sentence in Para. 1 implies that ______.
A. one may be angered by media reports and wants to avoid them
B. the media coined the term "Road Rage" only a few months ago
C. Road Rage has received much media coverage in the last few months
D. people not interested in the media know little about recent
happenings
2. The underlined word "spell" in Para. 3 means ________.
A. relieve
B. cause
C. spread
D. prevent
3. Which of the following characterizes aggressive driving?
A. Talking while driving.
B. Driving at high speed.
C. Sounding the horn when passing.
D. Shouting at another driver.
4. The last paragraph is intended to _________.
A. tell people how to deal with Road Rage
B. inform people how aggressive drivers could be
C. show people how to control themselves when angry
D. warn people against eye contact with another driver

It is true that shyness can be a disadvantage socially for those who suffer from it seriously. I mean real
shyness, not somebody who is simply quiet. Quiet people could be shy, but on the other hand, they may just
be observing because they are unsure of you or others in your company. They may be capable of being
extrovert (性格外向的) and sociable, but on some particular occasions, they are quiet.
I have learnt from my experience that those who observe and listen more and talk less can gain a position
of strength. This means that even a very shy person, the type who is reluctant to talk in company (在交際場
合), especially new company, can become a strong person in just about anything they choose. Remember,
knowledge is power, and a shy introvert (性格內(nèi)向的人) is in a better position to gain knowledge than an
extrovert. Introverted people can give great attention to learning, and as good listeners they can take in an
enormous amount from others. Over time, people can come to respect them far more than the extrovert who
speaks a lot. Usually about themselves.
What does it take, then for a very shy person to be that successful person they have always wanted to be?
They may only need one more thing to push themselves on their way. They need to dare themselves to take
the leap; and when they do, they will probably find all the knowledge they have gained over the years will help
them on their way to the top in their chosen field.
1. What does the first paragraph mainly want to tell us?
A. A person who is quiet may not be shy.
B. A shy person may not be a calm one.
C. Quiet people are usually doubtful.
D. Shyness is sometimes a bad feature.

[1]Sending text messages from your mobile phone while driving is more dangerous than driving after
drinking, which is found by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
[2]The reaction time of people who sent text messages as they drove slowed by 35%, while the reaction
time of those who had drunk alcohol slowed by 12%."This research shows how dangerous it is to text while
driving," researcher Nick Reed said in a statement. He said drivers who texted were distracted by trying to read
small texts on the phone and by thinking about how to write their messages. And using the phone requires them
to put their hands off the wheel. The combination of factors caused the slowness of reaction and the impairment (減弱) of vehicle control.
[3]One conclusion researchers made about why texting while driving is so dangerous is the length of time it
takes to write a message. The TRL said that writing a text message behind the wheel took 63 seconds, in which a car travels nearly a mile within town centre speed limits and over a mile within motorway speed limits.
[4]Nearly half of the 18-to 24-year-olds admitted texting as they drove, another survey discovered.

A. Control of respiration
B. Basic tips for preserving cut flowers C. Role of respiration
D. Most important aspect of flower care E. Need for clean water
F. Ways of stopping respiration
1. (     )
While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as
long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut
flower for a week or more without preservatives ( which contain biocides (殺蟲劑) that kill bacterial and
fungus) is to keep the water fresh and the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw up water.
2. (     )
An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example,
studies have shown that cut carnations retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when
kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowered at the right temperatures is probably the most important
aspect of flower care.
3. (     )
The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸),
supplies the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends
on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this
respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration
also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the
flower dies.
4. (     )
How, then, to control the speed at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration
controlled? By controlling temperature, we know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse (反面) is
also true. Thus by keeping low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.
5. (     )
Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers
find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean,
it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these
unwanted substances, chlorine bleach (含氯漂白劑) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that
15 drops of chlorine bleach be added to each liter of water. The water and solution (溶液) should also be
replaced each day.

Motivation is defined as the intention of achieving a goal, leading to goal-directed behavior. It drives
us towards achieving our goals, and gives us a reason to do the things that are required to reach our goals. There are two kinds of motivation: outside and self-motivation.
Outside motivation is motivation from an inspiring book, a story about courage, nature or even a child. You could be motivated after hearing a speech from an inspirational speaker or you might want to do
something for the community when you heard a heartwarming story. Sometimes, it is through outside
motivation that we think about our life and our achievements. Outside motivation gives you hope and
reminds you that it is possible to be successful and happy.
There is no stronger motivation than self-motivation. People can tell you all kinds of inspiring stories,
advice and encouragement but if we have no desire to change, it can't motivate us. Self-motivation
requires us to look within ourselves to find the reason to drive us towards our goal. We accept and
acknowledge what is lacked in our life and make it our goal to change ourselves. Self-motivation requires
a lot of perseverance and belief. In self-motivation, we tell ourselves what we want to do; nobody and
nothing can otherwise inspire us to take action. We are in charge of our actions and emotions.
Outside motivation could be the first step in helping us identify our goals. It gives us hope and
sometimes provides us with the guidelines towards achieving our goals. However, as this is other
people's experience, we might get side tracked or find it difficult to follow. Of course, we can be
de-motivated (消極的) too by our own self-motivation. However, as it comes from within us and we
master the process, self-motivation is a stronger and more secure way to help us achieve our goals.
1. Which of the following statements is NOT about outside motivation?
A. Other people can encourage us to reach our goals.
B. It's easy to follow other people's experiences to make progress.
C. Outside motivation gives us hope to achieve success.
D. A speech from a famous speaker may motivate us.
2. From the third paragraph, we learn that self-motivation ______ .
A. is more important than outside motivation.
B. comes into effect through outside motivation.
C. may make us easily doubt others' advice.
D. requires us to find the reason to succeed from outside.
3. The author showed his opinion by the following means EXCEPT ______ .
A. giving examples
B. listing numbers
C. making comparisons
D. using definitions
4. What would be the best title for the text?

Today, there's hardly an aspect of our life that isn't being upended (顛覆) by the tons of information
available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in
constant touch with each other via electronic mail. "If the automobile and aerospace technology had
exploded at the same pace as computer and information technology," says Microsoft, "a new car would
cost about $ 2 and go 600 miles on a small quantity of gas. And you could buy a Boeing 747 for the cost
of a pizza."
Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in
producing goods and serving for the needs of their customers. Nothing like it has been seen since the
beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when power-driven machines began producing more in a day than
men could turn out in nearly a year. "We view the growth of the Internet and e-commerce as a global
trend," says Merrill Lynch, "along the lines of printing press, the telephone, the computer, and electricity."
You would be hard pressed to name something that isn't available on the Internet. Consider: books,
health care, movie tickets, construction materials, baby clothes, stocks, cattle feed, music, electronics,
antiques, tools, real estate, toys, autographs of famous people, wine and airline tickets. And even after
you've moved on to your final resting place, there's no reason those you love can't keep in touch. A
company called FinalThoughts.com offers a place for you to store "afterlife e-mails" you can send to
Heaven with the help of a "guardian angel".
Kids today are so computer literate that it in fact ensures the United States will remain the
unchallenged leader in cyberspace for the foreseeable (能預(yù)測的) future. Nearly all children in families
with incomes of more than $75,000 a year have home computers, according to a study by the David and
Lucile Packard Foundation. Youngsters from ages 2 to 17 at all income levels have computers, with 52% of those connected to the Internet. Most kids use computers to play games (some for 30 hours or more
a week), and many teenage girls think nothing of rushing home from school to have e-mail chats with
friends they have just left.
What's clear is that, whether we like it or not, the Internet is an ever growing part of our lives and
there is no turning back. "The Internet is just 20% invented," says cyber pioneer Jake Winebaum. "The
last 80% is happening now."
1. What can we learn from the Microsoft's remark?
A. Today's cars and airplanes are extremely overpriced.
B. Information technology is developing at an amazing speed.

A. there are some genius ideas on the Internet
B. almost anything is available on the Internet
C. people can find good bargains on the Internet
D. some websites provide novel services to increase hits
3. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A. There is a link between income and computer ownership.
B. Many American children don't put computers to good use.
C. Studies show that boys are more computer literate than girls.
D. The U.S. will stay ahead in the information technology in years.
