October 15th is Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get
millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.
Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments.
These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-private Partnership for handwashing with soap. The
goal, they say, is to create a culture of handwashing with soap. The organizers say all soaps arc equally
effective at removing disease-causing germs (細(xì)茵). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands
with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails.
Then, wash well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth.
The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. Soap also
helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases
the chances that people will wash again.
It also says that washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than
any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths,
killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half.
1. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?
A. To keep healthy by washing hands.
B. To wash hands with soap.
C. To take action to wash hands.
D. To wash hands often.
2. Which of the following is the right way to wash hands?
    a. Washing hands well.
    b. Covering hands with soap.
    c. Drying hands.
    d. Rubbing hands with soap.
    e. Wetting hands.
A. a-c-b-e-d
B. e-d-a-b-c
C. a-c-b-d-e
D. c-b-d-a-c
3. Which fact can't explain why soap is important?
A. It gives people a longer handwashing lime.
B. It helps to remove a lot of germs from hands.
C. It attracts people to do more handwashing.
D. It gets all people into the habit of washing hands.
4. According to the last paragraph, diarrhea is a disease that ______?
A. kills half of the kids in the developing countries a year
B. causes the greatest number of child deaths
C. can be prevented to some degree by washing hands with soap
D. can't be cured without washing hands

Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized
countries. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more
than 10,000 years ago. 1_______
The scientists say that human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with
these changes in lifestyle and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. 2_______ They are called "diseases
of civilization". Many cancers and diseases of the blood system arc examples of such diseases.
The scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little
alcohol or tobacco, probably none. 3_______ However, a change in food is one of the main differences
between life in ancient times and that today.
Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic (馴養(yǎng)的)
ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products,
and they made very little use of grains. 4_______ We eat six times more salt than our ancestors and we
eat more sugar as well. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein (蛋白質(zhì)) and much
less vitamin C.
5_______ But the scientists say that we would be much healthier if we cat much the same way the
ancient people did, cutting the amount of fat, salty and sweet food.
A. Stone Age people lived a simple life without any meat.
B. But today, we enjoy eating a lot of these.
C. In that case, they would live a much healthier life.
D. Ancient people also got lots of physical exercise.
E. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.
F. People today probably don't want to live like our ancestors.
G. Modern people used to suffer from "diseases of civilization".

Like distance runners on a measured course, all of us will move through time in a roughly predictable
pattern.
In the first stage of our lives, we develop and grow, reaching toward the top of physical vitality (energy).
After we grow up, however, the body begins a process of gradually wearing out.
A new awareness of physical fitness may help lengthen our years of health and vitality, yet nothing we
do will work to stop the unavoidable force of aging.
Most of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body. The lungs become less able to take in
oxygen. Powerful muscles gradually lose their strength. The heart loses power and pumps less blood. Bones
grow easier to break.
Finally, we meet a stress, a stress that is greater than our physical resistance. Often, it is only a minor
accident or chance infection (a disease caused by virus), but this time, it brings life to an end.
In 1932, a classic experiment nearly doubled the lifetime of rats, simply by cutting back the calories (unit
for measuring the energy value of food) in their diet. The reason for the effect was then unknown.
Today, at the university of California at Berkley, Dr. Paul Seagle has also greatly lengthened the normal
lifetime of rats. The result was achieved through a special protein (蛋白質(zhì)) limited diet, which had a great
effect on the chemistry of the brain. Seagle showed that within the brain, specific chemicals control many
of the signals that influence aging. By changing that chemical balance, the clock of aging can be reset.
For the first time, the mystery (something that is difficult to understand or to explain) of why we age is
being seriously challenged. Scientists in many fields are now making striking and far-reaching discoveries.
An average lifetime lasts 75 years, yet in each of us lies a potential for a longer life. If we could keep the
vitality and resistance to disease that we have at age twenty, we would live for 800 years.

1. What does the underlined word "it" refer to?
A. Physical vitality.
B. Stress.
C. Aging.
D. Physical resistance.
2. The author believes the following EXCEPT that _____.
A. human's life pattern is predictable
B. physical fitness can't stop the force of aging
C. human's lifetime will last longer than 75 years
D. all of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body
3. How did Dr. Paul Seagle lengthen the lifetime of rats in his experiment?
A. By limiting the protein in their diet
B. By cutting the calories in their diet
C. By resetting their clock of aging
D. By keeping their physical fitness
4. What is probably the best title for the article?
A. Two Great Experiments
B. The Mystery of Human Life
C. Ways to lengthen Human Life
D. The Breakthrough in the Study of Aging

What's black and orange and growing for the first time in decades? India's tiger population! On Monday,
officials announced the results of the latest tiger count. The census (統(tǒng)計(jì)) totaled 1,706 tigers in forests
across the Asian country-about 300 more than four years ago. "These numbers give us hope for the future
of tigers in the world," said Jim Leape, international director of the World Wildlife Fund.
A century ago, about 100,000 tigers lived in India's forests. But by 2002, a count showed that there were
only 3,600 left. The number dropped to 1,411 in 2007. What caused India's tiger population to shrink so
dramatically?
More than anything else, experts say, development has taken a toll. People have moved into tiger territory
and destroyed much of the animal's habitat. Today, tigers live on a just small part of the land they occupied
100 years ago.
Illegal hunting has also contributed to the decline. Poachers (盜獵者) can demand high fees for tiger parts,
which are a key ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. The parts from one tiger can sell for tens of
thousands of dollars.
India's news is a step in the right direction. But while the number of tigers has increased there in the last
four years, the animals' habitat has shrunk. Roads and construction projects have blocked off many tiger
corridors-routes used by the big cats to go from one forest to another. "Securing these corridors should be
taken up as a priority," says Rajesh Gopal, of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
Last November, leaders from the 13 countries that are home to wild tigers met in St. Petersburg, Russia,
to develop a plan to help the endangered cats. They set a goal to double the world's tiger population by the
year 2022. Will we reach that goal? With India's tiger population on the rise and conservationists around the
world focused on helping the big cats, it seems it just might happen.
1. The underlined word "shrink" in Paragraph 2 most probably means _____.
A. develop
B. reduce
C. disappear
D. remove
2. Which is one of the reasons why India's tiger population declines?
A. Some living areas of India's tigers are destroyed by humans.
B. Roads and construction projects have bridged tiger corridors.
C. Some India's tigers have been hunted for to attract visitors.
D. Too many tigers are used in making traditional Chinese medicine.
3. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. 1,411 India's tigers were killed between 2002 and 2007
B. Rajesh Gopal is in charge of the World Wildlife Fund
C. the world's tiger population will surely be doubled by 2022
D. international efforts are being made to protect India's tigers
4. What is the author's attitude towards the future of India's tigers?
A. Critical
B. Objective
C. Optimistic
D. Concerned

Vans, Keds, Dollies-they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you'll know they're
actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the short
term and storing up years of foot, knee and back pain in the future.
Here, the experts identify the problems caused by teenagers' shoe choice.
KEDS/VANS
Slip-on shoes with elastic (彈性的) sides are particularly popular among teenage boys-
with Keds and Vans the most sought-after brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat-so flat that the heel, which strikes the
ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.
BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their
flatness, as with Keds and Vans. However ballet pumps, which have no string or heel, have
other specific problems.
"As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on the toes to keep the shoe on, causing an
awkward gait (步法), this leads to short- and long-term problems such as calluses (繭子),
heel and knee pain."
WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait. They may look good, but the heels on
these are so high they can force the wearer's body weight forward, making them very
unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of
women with constant back pain.
SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists (足科醫(yī)生) have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear?
Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that
does not press the toes, such as Clark's, Marks & Spencer or Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing 'bad' shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics (矯形器) in the shoes. These
support and correct the movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrist, can often transform their walk
and halt the damage.
1. Of all the shoes mentioned in the passage, which can cause the worst problems?
A. Marks & Spencer.
B. Wedges & Stilettos.
C. Keds and Vans.
D. Ballet Pumps.
2. Which pair of shoes may not be found on the podiatrists' wish list?
A.  B.  C.  D.
3. The underlined word "halt" in the last paragraph probably means _____.
A. increase
B. worsen
C. stop
D. cure
4. From this passage we can infer _____.
A. trendy shoes may ruin teenagers' health
B. fashionable shoes all have orthotics in them
C. experts are strongly against wearing popular shoes
D. podiatrists are expert at producing branded shoes
5. In which column of Mail Online can you find this passage?
A. Sports.
B. Science.
C. Health.
D. Shopping.

Britain's seed bank, the only one in the world aiming to collect all of the planet's wild plant species, has
reached its goal of banking 10 percent by 2010.
The Millennium Seed Bank Project, run by Kew Gardens-one of the oldest botanical gardens-will officially
deposit the 24,200th species on Thursday, a pink, wild banana from China.
More than 50 countries are now on board with Kew's giant task but vast places of the globe, including
India and Brazil, still need to join in and donate seeds, director Paul Smith said.
The seed bank is one of the largest and most diverse in the world with more than 1.5 billion seeds. Its
goal is to help protect the planet's bio-diversity during a time of climate change.
The wild banana seed is under threat of extinction (滅絕) in southwest China from agricultural development.
It is a vital food source for Asian elephants and important for growing bananas for human consumption.
Stored at minus-20 degrees centigrade, so they can last for thousands of years, the seeds await the day
that scientists hope never comes-when the species no longer exist in the wild.
It is a race against time, Smith said, because in the last decade alone, 20 plants held in the bank have already
been wiped out in the wild. He estimates that between a third and a quarter will become extinct this century.
"It is urgent and it is happening now. An area, the size of England, is cleared of primary vegetation (植被)
every year." Smith said.
Because most of the world's food and medicines come from nature, protecting wild plant species is quite
important, scientists say. There are already many other seed banks safeguarding food crops, which only
account for 0.6 percent of plant diversity.
For Kew's next goal-to collect a quarter of wild varieties by 2020-the botanists need 10 million pounds a
year, or a further 100 million pounds on top of the 40 million they have already been granted.
1. What's the final purpose of the Britain's seed bank?
A. To collect enough money for the project.
B. To safeguard food crops.
C. To protect wild plants from extinction.
D. To help scientists study wild plants.
2. The wild banana seed in China is in danger because of _____.
A. the expanding of farming work
B. the climate change in this area
C. the large number of Asian elephants
D. human's large consumption
3. We can learn from the passage that _____.
A. the seeds in the bank can be used now and then all over the world
B. India and Brazil haven't joined in the Seed Bank Project at present
C. there is only one seed bank in the world at present
D. the wild plants in places like India and China will never die out
4. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 7 refer to?
A. The extinction of plant species.
B. Kew Gardens' next goal.
C. Britain's seed bank.
D. The Millennium Seed Bank Project.
5. Which of the following information isn't mentioned in the passage?
A. The global partnership of collecting wild plant species.
B. The temperature condition of the conservative wild plant species.
C. The government's financial support for the seed bank project.
D. Scientists' concern on the extinct wild plant species.

A shocking number of children are overweight and obese, and doctors are seeing increasingly high levels
of cholesterol (膽固醇) in children, even those with no family history of high cholesterol. To help your kids
maintain a healthy diet and healthy cholesterol levels, you need to do the following.
     Pack their lunches
That way you can at least try to ensure they get something healthy instead of the fried and starchy (富含

As one of nature's top predators (捕食性動(dòng)物), the tiger is not an animal, that we would ordinarily think
of as being a chicken.
However, one tiger, which lives in an English zoo, turned out to be more cowardly than his keepers could
ever have imagined.
Tanvir, a two-year-old Bengal tiger, got stuck at the top of a new 5m-high activity tower in his enclosure,
after climbing it for the first time.
The branching tower had been designed to provide mental stimulation for Tanvir by testing his ingenuity,
but after scaling the exercise structure in just a few seconds, he lost his nerve when it came to coming back
down.
Tanvir went on to spend nearly two days at the top of the tower trying to pluck up the courage to attempt
a descent.
A spokesperson for the zoo said chat Tanvir had taken half an hour to come down from a smaller structure
only l.5m high previously, and that the taller tower had clearly been too much for him.
"Every time he gets to the edge, he looks out, puts a paw over, and thinks, 'no, I'm not doing it!'" said
Samantha Cordrey.
In the end Tanvir's hunger got the better of his fear, and after almost 48 hours he made his way down in
order to eat.
It appears that Tanvir is none the worse for his experience, but it is not known if he will find the guts (勇
氣) to go back up his exercise tower again.
The whole episode only serves to underline the difficulties faced by zoo staff in creating environments that
will stimulate the animals living in enclosed spaces.
"It was made to challenge him but he's a bit of a wimp," said Tanvir's keeper.
1. From the first paragraph we can learn that ____.
A. tigers are often compared with chickens
B. tigers have nothing to do with chickens
C. tigers sometimes feed on chickens
D. tigers are generally not so cowardly
2. Which of the following is true?
A. It took Tranvir an hour and a half to come down from the tower.
B. The first tower did not have any effect in training the tiger.
C. It is uncertain whether Tanvir will go back up the tower once more.
D. Tanvir enjoyed his stay on the tower so much that he refused to come down.
3. What's the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us how timid a tiger became in an English zoo.
B. To call on us to protect tigers that are being kept in enclosed spaces.
C. To emphasize the difficulties of creating suitable environments for enclosed animals.
D. To tell readers how to train wild animals, such as tigers.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. In fact the tower structure was not difficult for Tanvir.
B. Zoo keepers knew the structure was a bit difficult for Tanvir.
C. Tanvir was the only tiger that was trained by the zoo keepers.
D. All tigers needed training before they were set free from the zoo.
