The United Nations says forty million people or so around the world went hungry in 2008, mainly because of higher food prices. Early estimates from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show that 963 million people did not get enough to eat.

World food prices have dropped since early 2008. Prices of major crops have decreased by more than half from their height earlier last year. But they remain high compared to earlier years.

But FAO official Hafez Ghanem says lower prices have failed to end the food crisis (危機(jī)) in many poor countries. “For millions in developing countries,” he says, “getting enough food every day to live an active and healthy life is a distant dream. ”

The FAO says food shortage is a threat to people's health. Today, two-thirds of the world's undernourished people live in just a few countries. These are India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Ethiopia and so on.

A report on food insecurity warns that the current economic crisis could send even more people into hunger and poverty.

In sub-Saharan Africa, the percentage of the people who continually go hungry fell from 34% in 1997 to 30% in 2008. But the FAO says Ghana is the only country that has reached two sets of hunger reduction targets. These were set by the 1996 World Food Summit and the Millennium Development Goals. The main reason is the growth in agricultural production in Ghana.

The FAO says some countries in Southeast Asia like Thailand and Vietnam have made progress in hunger reduction goals. But South Asia and Central Asia haven't, and North Korea is still in hot water.

What FAO official Hafez Ghanem says implies(暗示)__________

A. it's easy but takes long to provide people with enough food

B. enough food can make people more active and healthier

C. there is difficulty solving the food shortage in a short time

D. people in developing countries will never get enough food

The underlined word "undernourished" in Para. 4 probably means ________.

A. hungry and unhappy                    B. unhealthy for lack of food

C. not fat because of poverty                  D. undeveloped and poor

What is the best title of this passage?

A. The food production of the world

B. The hunger reduction target of the FAO

C. The food shortage around the world

D. The solution to the global food shortage

Patients and doctors alike have long believed in the healing (治療) power of humor. It is claimed that humor not only affects patients’ moods, but can actually help them recover faster.

Several studies seem to support this. Patients in better spirits are known to have higher immune cell counts. Some have even claimed to have healed themselves of serious illnesses by reading comics and watching comedies.

Despite all this, many researchers are not convinced. They point out the fact that many sufferings have been known to disappear naturally, with or without a daily dose of laughter. They also say that while optimism in general does seem to be related to better health, it is hard to tell which comes first.

Humor in times of stress, however, clearly makes us feel better. On one level, it takes our minds off our troubles and relaxes us. On another, it releases powerful endorphins, a chemical produced by your body that reduces pain.

There are cases where the appreciation of a good joke is indeed directly related to a person’s health. It can show, for example, whether a person has suffered damage to one particular area of the brain: the right frontal lobe (額葉).

Scientists confirmed this by having people read jokes and asking them to choose the funniest endings from a list. Subjects with normal brains usually chose endings that were based on a relatively complex synthesis (綜合) of ideas. Subjects with specifically located brain damage, however, responded only to slapstick (鬧劇) endings, which did not depend on a particular context. When pressed, the brain-damaged subjects saw the logic in the correct endings. They simply did not find them funny.

Of course, humor is largely an individual matter. Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lamebrain. However, you might suggest that he lighten up—for the health of it.

58. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. all researchers have agreed on the healing power of humor

B. people seldom accuse their friends of not understanding jokes

C. the author holds a positive attitude to the healing power of humor

D. reading comics will surely become a popular way of treating diseases

59. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Many researchers are not convinced of the healing power of humor.

B. Patients in bad moods are known to have higher immune cell counts.

C. Optimism in general does seem to be related to better health.

D. People should try their best to cheer up for their good health.

60. Scientists had some people read jokes and asked them to choose the funniest endings from a list to confirm that ________.

A. the brain-damaged people are different from those with normal brains

B. a person with a normal brain usually responds to slapstick endings

C. a person suffering certain brain damage doesn’t appreciate a good joke

D. humor takes our minds off our troubles by releasing powerful endorphins

61. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Which comes first, humor or health?             B. Humor can cure different illnesses

C. People need humor in times of stress         D. Humor contributes to good health

Several interesting American museums tell about health subjects. One is the Doctor Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry. It is at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. That is where the first college in the world to train dentists began. The museum tells about the history of the medical treatment of teeth. Visitors can see some frightening devices that once were used to remove infected teeth. They also can see sets of teeth made of animal bone. They were made for a famous American —— the first President, George Washington.

Most people do not consider a visit to the dentist their idea of a good time. However, the director of the museum says he wants to make the museum a funny place to visit. He says he also wants to teach visitors about the importance of taking care of their teeth.

Another museum collects devices that help people hear. The Kenneth W. Berger Hearing Aid Museum is at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Losing a baby tooth can be fun for a kid. You can put it under your pillow and look forward to finding some money there in the morning. And then you can watch your new permanent(永恒的) tooth grow in its place.

But if a permanent tooth falls out, that’s a problem. There isn’t another one under the gum(齒齦)that can replace it. Unfortunately, this happens to some older people. And if permanent teeth fall out or need to be pulled, an older person might need dentures.

Dentures, known as false teeth, are a set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing. There are partial dentures, which take the place of only a few teeth and prevent the others from changing position. If all the teeth are gone, the person would need complete dentures, which replace every tooth in the mouth.

Dentures can cause pains at first and take little time to get adjusted to. They also need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked in denture solution when not in the mouth.

Dentures are important for older folks because, without teeth, it’s hard to smile, talk, and eat properly. But it can be a little weird if you see someone take out his or her dentures. It can also be strange to see someone, like a grandparent, without dentures in because he or she won’t have any teeth. Try not to make fun of the person because this could cause hurt feelings.

People usually lose their permanent teeth due to periodontal disease, or gum disease, which is caused by bacteria that attacks the gums. Diseased gums aren’t strong and healthy, so teeth can get loose and fall out. Older people often have many cavities(洞)that have been filled over the years, and these fillings can weaken over time, leading to more tooth decay.

67.If one of your baby teeth falls out, you      .

A.should have a false tooth fixed in its place

B.have to put it under your pillow at once

C.will gain a permanent tooth in future

D.can exchange it for some money

68.A person wearing dentures      .

A.should brush them with a special denture brush every few days

B.will take a very long time to adjust himself or herself to them

C.will experience unpleasant feelings at the beginning of fixing them

D.should use denture solution to soak them in his or her mouth

69.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Partial dentures can prevent the remaining teeth from changing position.

B.Old people will find it hard to smile, talk, and eat properly without teeth.

C.A person’s teeth will possibly get loose if diseases strike his gums.

D.It is hard for a person to wear dentures if all his teeth have fallen out.

70.What does the underlined word “weird” mean in the fifth paragraph?

A.inconvenient            B.excited          C.uncomfortable       D.impolite

Damage to Ozone layer Gets Worse

In the middle of winter, when snow is falling in many parts of the United States, scientists have sounded a warning to people who plan to spend many hours in the sun this summer. The warning is: The sun’s summertime rays are more dangerous than once thought.

A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone (臭氧層) in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation(紫外線輻射), will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach Earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.

Scientists first became concerned about the ozone layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctica during the winter. The hole was caused by chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.

Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data(數(shù)據(jù)) from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctica. Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.

Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban(禁止) of the chemicals.

59.   The scientists have observed the ozone layer_____.

A.  since 1980             B.  since last winter

C.  for about 20 years       D.  for about one year

60. The ozone layer in the atmosphere can _____.

A.  do a lot of good to human beings in many ways.

B.  protect humans from diseases caused by bad weather.

C.  do a lot of harm to human beings in the summer-time.

D.  protect humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation.

61. Scientists first found that there was a hole in the ozone layer_____.

A.  above Arctic during the winter in the mid-1980s

B.  above Antarctica during the winter in the mid-1980s

C.  over somewhere in the north of the equator in 1980

D.  over the U.S.A in the summertime in the mid-1980s

62.   The damage to the ozone layer was caused by_____.

A.  the changeable weather

B.  ozone-destroying chemicals

C.  chemicals from refrigerators

D.  chemicals from air conditioners
