Who are these people rushing by you in the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “Americans” is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business, and sports—but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This “side-by-side” living style has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.
67. More than 215 million people call America “home” because _______.
A. they buy their houses there
B. they settle there now
C. they get married there
D. they were born there

A. They always stick to their own customs and habits.
B. “Side-by-side” living style is not suitable.
C. They face the society they are not familiar with and make changes in their customs.

70. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Advantages and Disadvantages
B. Different Customs and Habits
C. Home for the People
D. “Side-by-side” Living Style in America

BBC: The Chinese culture is fascinating. During China’s Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, paper-cutting is one of China’s most popular and characteristic folk arts. The tradition goes back to the 6th century. After hundreds of years of development, it has now become a very popular way to decorate the house among country folk, especially women. During the Spring Festival, people paste(粘貼)some paper-cuttings on the entrance gates. They are supposed to bring good luck for the family.
The main cutting tools are simple: paper and scissors or an engraving(雕刻)knife. Clever craftspeople are very good at cutting out a theme about daily life. When you look at works made in this method carefully, you will be amazed by the details in the faces of the people as well as the plants and animals. Although other art forms, like painting, can also show similar scenes paper-cutting still stands out for its charm. Though simple, the color appears charmingly bright.
While it is easy to learn how to cut a piece of paper, mastering it is another thing. One must hold the knife in an upright fashion and press evenly on the paper with a little strength. Flexibility is required but the whole image will be damaged if you make one mistake. Engravers attempt to carve a circle like the moon, a straight line like a stem of wheat, a square like a brick, and many other forms, but not all of them can do them.
People find hope and comfort in expressing wishes with paper-cuttings. For a wedding ceremony, red paper-cuttings are traditional and required decorations for the furniture. Patterns of plump children holding fish signify that they will be wealthy next year.
63. Where does the writer of this passage probably come from?
A. The USA. B. Japan.
C. The UK. D. France.

A. hold the knife or scissors as tight as you can
B. avoid any unnecessary change
C. bear all the set rules in your mind

New archaeological discovers suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began in some form many centuries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a widening range of scientific and historical research, could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.
The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about 1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps a million years to the migration of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission(使命) across the western desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to the Parthians of old Persia in exchange for acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets of Rome.
But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West long before the Han emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of world trade and provide insights into the mystery of just how and when Europe and the Mediterranean lands first became aware of the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.
59. The word “coupled” in the first paragraph could best be replaced by_______ .
A. produced B. continued
C. doubled D. combined
60. The silk thread found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy suggests that_______.
A. Egyptians had probably travelled to China to buy silk
B. trade along the Silk Road began earlier than once thought
C. historical research often achieves fascinating results
D. new light can now be thrown on ancient trading practices
61.Historians have always considered Zhang Qian’s mission important because they believe_______.
A. he brought back knowledge of Rome to the emperor
B. he discovered the Silk Road
C. he helped establish East-West trade
D. he travelled as far as Afghanistan
62. When did the official origin of East-West commerce along the Silk Road get to Persia?
A. About 1000 BC.
B. In the late 2nd century BC.
C. A million years ago.
D. In the 2nd century.

The total continent of Antarctica, from its mountains to the seas full of blue whales, emperor penguins and leopard seals, is, by means of international agreement, classified as a nature preserve. The Antarctic Treaty took effect in 1998, and doesn’t allow mining and oil drilling for at least fifty years anywhere within the boundaries of Antarctica. The treaty places a strong emphasis on the protection of the natural environment but not development. All wildlife threats including dogs and chemicals used for killing pests are also banned.
The agreement has been set by some countries to keep Antarctica free of commercialism and industrial development. This agreement was signed in 1991 by the 26 leading nations with scientific interest in the land. Some of the nations in the agreement are the United States, Russia, China, India, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, and most of the primary European nations.
The rules made by this treaty ended over 15 years of lobbying(游說)by environmental groups and put a stop to diplomatic(外交的)talks. In addition to preventing all oil drilling and mining, the 35 scientific outposts(前哨站) on Antarctica are required to remove all rubbish and clean up all places where unwanted waste is left. It keeps scientific stations from discharging untreated waste water into the surrounding waters.
Sled dogs were what explorers like Norway’s Roald Amundsen used to reach the South Pole in 1911. Dogs, however, were banned because they are a recent danger to the penguins and other native birds.
With laws enforced(實施)in 26 nations, each nation will be responsible for enforcing the rules individually. There are many people who see this treaty as an environmental success story.

Just a little walk in the city of New York or Chicago, for example, would make any foreigner realize the presence of people of various races walking down the street: probably blacks, African Americans, Spanish, Asians, and so on. Or for another example, on school campuses in America, both the teachers and the students usually consist of people from a number of countries rather than only one.
Indeed, the variety of ethnicities (種族淵源) in America is often claimed to be the best mix in the world. That’s why the famous term “melting pot” arises. Its basic idea presents the whole nation as one large pot. Anyone who enters the United States is automatically thrown into this “pot”. All the cultural aspects that one brings into are mixed together, or melted, to form a new culture.
In comparison with the “melting pot” theory, there is a “salad bowl” theory. This idea shows a completely separate view that newcomers bring different cultures, where each of these cultures is kept as an essential part to make up the whole. Every distinctive culture or belief is considered to be one of the tastes or ingredients (成分) that contribute to forming the whole. Therefore, its original shape and characteristics are maintained.
The ideas of the “melting pot” and the “salad bowl” in America both show an ideal to many people and are often admired. Having a close look at the reality of the country, such as the existing ethnic segregation (分離), the fact of the white population fleeing from the minority, and the trend of the minority group forming their own group, one can see that the “melting pot” theory is merely a myth. Despite its long fame, it is more suitable to label America as a “salad bowl”.
51. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. America: “melting pot” or “salad bowl”?
B. Why many people come to America?
C. The development of American culture
D. The ways to adapt to American life
52. The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell us the fact that________.
A. a foreigner is likely to experience culture shock in America
B. America is a country of a wide variety of ethnic minorities
C. people of various races live in big cities in America
D. it’s easy for a foreigner to stand out in America
53. According to the “melting pot” theory, people who enter the United States______.
A. are eager to change the new culture
B. can adapt to the new culture more easily
C. try to prove the importance of their culture
D. lose their own identities to form a new culture
54. We can learn from the last paragraph that different ethnic minorities in America_______.
A. are completely equal in society
B. tend to live segregated
C. strictly keep their own cultures
D. have mixed together
