9、This report presents facts of home computer used by a group of young people. It is a common belief that teenagers today know about 1 and are familiar 2 using them in all their lives. We decided to try to 3 if this was true.
We questioned thirty people between 14 and 18. All the teenagers we 4 said they had computers at home. We asked them how much time they spent on their computers in an average week, 5 we were most interested in 6 they used their computers 7 .
The average time 8 on a computer in a week was about 12 hours, with the highest user average 32 hours and the lowest user 9 5 hours. There was 10 important different between boys and girls.
All of the people questioned said they regularly used the computer to 11 games. Fourteen told us they did some word-progressing at home, but not very much. Only two said that computers 12 them with their studies, 13 eight people told us they kept address and telephone numbers on their computers 14 used them writing diaries. Only three people said they were learning to program computers. But 15 of the people used their computers for 16 purpose.
The results make it known that average computer use is quite high 17 teenagers. They also show quite clearly that computers are seen by most young people 18 little more than game machine. 8、Albert Einstein was probably the most famous scientist of the twentieth century. He changed scientific thinking in the modern world. He is generally considered as the greatest physicist who ever lived. What’s more, he devoted a lot of his time and energy to working for human rights and progress.
In 1933, while Einstein was visiting England and the United States, the Nazi government of Germany took all his things away, including his position and his citizenship. Einstein then settled down in the United States. In 1939, Einstein, who loved peace—afraid of a world in which only Hitler would had an atomic bomb(原子彈)—tried hard to persuade President Franklin D.Roosevelt in a famous letter to have the United States start uranium research. That Germany, after all, had no bomb, and that the first bomb would fall on Japan, could not have been expected. After the war, Einstein never stopped working for peace and reducing the number of soldiers in the world.
Although he wasn’t connected with any accepted religion(宗教), Einstein felt that trust in a personal God was too special an idea to be suitable to the God at work in this universe, but he never believed that the universe was one of chance or disorder. The universe to him was one of pure law and order. He once said, “God may know everything, but he is not hateful.”

7、The United States covers a large part of the North American continent. Its neighbors are Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. Although the United States is a big country, it is not the largest in the world. In 1964, its population was over 185 000 000.
When this land first became a nation, after winning its independence(獨立)from England, it had thirteen states. Each of the states was represented(代表)on the American flag by a star. All these states were in the eastern part of the continent. As the nation grew toward the west, new states were added and new stars appeared on the flag. For a long time, there were 48 stars. In 1959, however, two more stars were added to the flag, representing the new states of Alaska and Hawaii.
Indians were the first people of the land which is now the United States. There are still many thousands of Indians now living in all parts of the country. Sometimes it is said that the Indians are “the only real Americans”. Most Americans come from all over the world. Those who came first in greatest numbers to make their homes on the eastern coast of North America were mostly from England. It is for that reason that the language of the United States is English and that its culture and customs are more like those of England than those of any other country in the world.

6、Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span. "I think we are knocking at the door of immortality (永生),' said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. "I think by 2075 we will see it and that's a conservative estimate (保守的估計)."
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (納米技術(shù)) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. "There is a great push so that people can live from I20 to 180 years," he said. "Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years."
However, many scientists who specialize in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. "It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?" said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. "At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all."

5、Jacksonville, Florida, Nov.10 —A 14-year-old boy was arrested today after the rotten body of an 8-year-old girl who was his neighbor was found hidden in his bedroom. She had been stabbed(用刀刺) and beaten.
The boy, Joshua Earl Patrick Philips, admitted and was charged with murder in the death of the girl,Maddie Clifton, who disappeared on Nov.3,Sheriff Nat Glover said.
Joshua, who has no criminal record, would not be eligible(夠條件的) for the death punishment because of his age. Detectives recovered a knife and a baseball bat believed to be the weapons used to kill the girl, the Sheriff said.
The girl had been stabbed at least nine times and was struck in the head, Sheriff Glover said at a news conference. The authorities did not say whether she had been attacked sexually, or did they give motive for the attack.
The boy’s mother, Melissa Philips, grew suspicious after the police searched her home on Monday and detected an odor (smell), the Sheriff said. This morning she pulled aside the frame of the bed, saw a child’s feet and called an officer, he said.
Maddie’s body was found under a sheet of wood supporting the frame of the water bed, which was filled, Sheriff Glover said, adding,” He put her under the bed and taped her up in it."
Investigators believe the third-grader was killed in the boy’s house shortly after she disappeared last Tuesday, touching off a widespread search.
On Friday, Maddie’s parents, Steve and Sheila Clifton, made an earnest request for her return.
The boy’s house, like others in the neighborhood, had been searched three times. During the third search on Monday, he mother had at first said she thought the odor came from family pets.
Hundreds of volunteers had distributed thousands of leaflets with Maddie’s picture since she disappeared that evening, about 30 minutes after she went out to play with friends.
The girl’s house is one of the well-kept, single-family homes in the older working class of Jacksonville. Yellow ribbons(絲帶) still hung from the trees this morning.

4、Thirty- two people watched Kitty Genovese being killed right below their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this in gunman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellowman?
“Not so,”say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to research into the reasons why people didn’t act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency(緊急情況). Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the side - walk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma(昏迷) from a headache? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk? Is the smoke coming into the room from a leak(漏洞)in the air conditioning? Is it “steam pipes”? Or is it really smoke from a fire? It’s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency. Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible(負(fù)責(zé)任的). He must feel that he must help, or the person won’t get the help he needs.
The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be “tested.”Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. The researchers started them off on the “tests.”Then they went into the next room. A curtain divided the “testing room”and the room into which they went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of bookshelves falling and a cry for help. All of this had been prerecorded on a tape recorder.
Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped.Of the students in groups, none helped.
In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn’t. They do not feel any direct responsibility.
Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were shocked, they sweated, and they had trembling hands. They felt the other person’s trouble. But they did not act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.
1.The purpose of this passage is ________.
A.to explain why people fail to act in emergencies
B.to explain when people will act in emergencies
C.to explain what people will do in emergencies
D.to explain how people feel in emergencies
2.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.When a person tries to help others, he must be clear that there is a real emergency.
B.When a person tries to help others, he should know whether they are worth his help.
C.A person must take the full responsibility for the safety of those in emergencies if he wants to help.
D.A person with a heart attack needs the most.
3.The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that ________.
A.they are afraid of emergencies
B.they are not willing to get themselves involved
C.others will act if they themselves hesitate
D.they do not have any direct responsibility for those who need help
4.The author suggests that ________.
A.we shouldn’t blame a person if he fails to act in emergencies
B.a(chǎn) person must feel guilty if he fails to help
C.people should be responsible for themselves in emergencies
D.when you are in trouble, people will help you anyway

3、Men have traveled ever since they first appeared on the earth.
Long ago, they did not travel for pleasure but to find new places where their cattle could feed, or to_____________________ from their enemies, or to find more favorable climates.
They traveled on foot. Their journeys were long, tiring and often dangerous. They protected themselves with simple weapons, such as wooden sticks or stone clubs, and by lighting fires at night and, above all, keeping together.
Very soon they discovered easier ways of traveling. They rode on the backs of their tamed animals. They made boats out of tree trunks so as to travel across water.
Later they traveled, not for necessity, but for the joy and excitement of seeing and experiencing new things. This is still the main reason why we travel today.
Traveling, of course, has now become a highly-organized business. There are cars and splendid roads, express trains, huge ships and jet planes, all of which make traveling comfortable and safe.
