When we see babies or pets, we can't help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.

A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes(基因) and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.

In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as the result of the touch, the mitochondria(線粒體) in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cell(細(xì)胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.

Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by 30 percent.” Although the touching does have a strong influence on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change. Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.

The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

根據(jù)“A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t like to be touched.”

根據(jù)“The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants.”

根據(jù)“The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant. In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants.”

根據(jù)“such as insects and bad weather.”

根據(jù)“Although the touching does have a strong influence on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change.”

Oct 31, 2013 wasn’t just another Halloween for me. While I was driving home, a vehicle struck my new car from behind, with a blow that sent me into the busy road. I fought hard to open my eyes for a second, but I lost consciousness (知覺(jué)).

After I was taken to hospital, the doctors told me I wasn’t going to be able to move anything from my neck down.

I had lost the use of almost every muscle and was very weak.

But at the rehab centre (康復(fù)中心), I saw a glimpse of hope and was inspired by other patients with injuries like mine.

The first year was slow and I didn’t see much progress. My head felt like a heavy ball and I couldn’t hold it up, and my blood pressure would drop all the time.

And while the idea of walking or even standing was out of the question, I sure did try.

Six months later, I was finally given the green light to return home.

However, that’s when the reality of the situation became clear to me.

I realized that my life was so different. I was unable to use a phone, and unable to feed or wash myself.

I couldn’t grip on to anything, a fork or spoon was too heavy to pick up.

I had to learn to be patient with myself, and to enjoy every moment going forward.

I was determined to walk again, so giving up was no longer a choice.

I fought hard on my recovery and still do to this day. I’m now moving my legs and arms on my own, doing things like working out, swimming, and yoga.

All of this is proving my doctors wrong, and is turning the page from the impossible to the possible.

My faith (信念), supportive family, friends, and team encourage me to continue to work harder.

I believe that this difficulty is an opportunity to grow, become stronger, and keep on fighting to hopefully inspire others not to give up.

I learned one lesson from my car accident: Never give up on faith, and never give up on hope.

1Why wasn’t the writer able to move anything from his neck down?

A.The road was busy on Halloween.

B.He had a fight with other people.

C.He was driving carelessly on his way home.

D.His car was stuck by a vehicle from behind.

B.He has recovered and runs well.

C.He can’t move his legs or arms.

D.He has almost given up all hope.

4Which word can best describe the writer?

A.Supportive.B.Faithful.C.Hard-working.D.Strong-minded.

5What is the best title for the passage?

A.Life is Not Easy.B.Never Give Up.

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?

Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. Not only students but also adults like talking with 1 by texting. However, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems 2 our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause RSI (Repetitive Stain Injury) in our thumbs(拇指) and wrists(手腕). We spoke to a doctor 3 Harriet Wilson, who treats many patients with RSI. She said if we 4 more than 10-15 minutes texting each time, we could have problems in the future. She also said that the 5 patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl. She had such bad RSI that she couldn’t hold a 6.

As mobile phones develop, people can do many interesting things on them. We are 7 closer with mobile phones. Texting with a smaller phone, is worse 8 using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using computers and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people found 9 with RSI. 10we don't do anything about this, too many young people would grow up in terrible pain.
