Can you remember a world before the Internet? If you answer is “no,” then you are probably a millennial. Millennials are the new generation of young Americans. They were born between 1982 and 1992. There are 33 million of them, and they are just starting to enter the workforce(勞動(dòng)力). Many experts believe that millennials are different from young Americans of past generations. They also believe that millenials will change the workforce in important ways.
How are millennials different? They are the first generation born in the computer age. The internet has always been a part of their lives. They spend about 16 hours a week on the Internet, and this doesn’t include e-mail. And they spend 72 hours a week using other electronic media(媒體), including mobile phones and video games. They are “nation speakers” of the language of the computer age. People who were born earlier will never be native speakers of that language. Why not? They did not grow up “speaking” it.
How will millennials change the workforce? To answer that question, it is important to understand how millennials use the Internet. They use the Internet to communicate. They visit website such as FaceBook and MySpace every day. They share(分享)ideas, music, information, games, and friendships with people all over the world. When they start working, they will want to share their work and ideas with others.
It is also important to understand the way millennials grew up. Thair parents and teachers gave them a lot of attention. They taught them that their opinions were valuable(有價(jià)值的). As a result, amny millennials are very cinfident. At work, they will expect their co-workers and bosses to listen to their opinions.
Millennials also grew up with a lot of structure in their lives. Many of them went to school from the age of two or three and played on sports teams. At work, they will expect the rules to be clear. They will also expect a strong but fair boss, like a coach on a sports team. They will follow the person in charge (主管) if he or she is fair. But they will not follow an unfair boss. They will also expect their work to be fun and creative, similar to their experience on a sports team.
These are a few of the changes that experts believe millennials will bring to the American workforce. But the world is changing very fast. There will probably be more changes that are difficult to imagine today.

The television has been an important part of many families’ life. Many children like to sit in front of the television instead of doing something else. When many experts (專(zhuān)家) say that television is bad for children, some believe that television can really have a good effect on a child’s life, if it is used properly.
There are many television programmes that both provide fun and education. Spending some time on these types of programmes is good for your child’s development. The television can be more efficient at teaching a child certain (某種) tasks.
Parents can also use the television to help children read. After watching an educational programme, your child may become more interested in a topic. Use that interest to drive your child toward reading.
The television can also help to make a family closer. After a programme ends, you can start a decision about it. This can help encourage a healthy family.
The television can introduce your child to new cultures. This can help your child learn a lot from them.
The television can also help build a bridge for difficult communication between parents and children. Fashions in child-care (兒童保育), as all parents know, come and go. Bottle-feeding or mother's milk? Full-time parental care or a child-minder(兒童保育員)? These problems always trouble the parents a lot. And now, there is a book called Childsplay dealing with the problem of child-care.
The author of Childsplay, Lucy Jackson, believes most school children do some sports at school. And many adults take regular exercise in their free time.
Babies, though, spend most of the time in front of the television or sitting in a push-chair (折疊式嬰兒車(chē)) or high chair. If the world were a safer place, every child would run around freely, but that is simply not possible. As a result, they become lazy, overweight and unfit.
Ms. Jackson is worried that if small children take no regular exercise, bad habits will continue into adulthood (成人期 ). She suggests that parents should begin exercising with very small babies, moving their legs and arms gently in time to music. As children grow, they should follow and exercise program using soft balls, household furniture and play equipment.
Many experts in child development do not agree. They feel that children will learn to run and jump as they play naturally; they do not need planned exercise. They would not be overweight if they ate healthier food. An increasing number of parents, though, are taking their children to exercise classes. The kids jump around with their mothers to disco music. They seem to enjoy themselves, but it is not at all clear if the classes have any effect on their future development.
1.According to the passage, the parents do not worry about how to care about their children.
2.Childsplay is a book about how to take care of the children.
3.Ms. Jackson doesn't believe babies take enough exercise.
4.Ms. Jackson encourages parents to take exercise with their babies.
5.Though we don’t know if the exercise will have any effect on children future development, some mothers have already taken their children to exercise.

Children can spend hours a day looking at computer screens and other digital devices(數(shù)碼設(shè)備). Some eye doctors say this leads to an increase in “computer vision syndrome(電腦視力綜合癥).”
Nathan Bonilla-Warford is an optometrist(驗(yàn)光師)in Tampa, Florida. He has seen an increase in problems in children. “A lot more children come into the office either because their parents have noticed that they have headaches or red or watery eyes or discomfort, or because their nearsightedness appears to be increasing and they’re worried,” he says.
Dr. Bonilla-Warford says part of the problem is that children may be more likely to pay no attention to early warning signs than adults. “Even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, they’re less likely to tell their parents, because they don’t want to have the game or the computer or whatever taken away,” he explains.
He says another part of the problem is that people blink(眨眼)less often when they use digital devices. He says, “A person who uses an electronic device blinks about one third as much as we normally do in everyday life. And so that can result in the front part of the eye drying and not staying protected like normal.”
Eye doctors offer suggestions like following which is known as the 20/20/20 rule. That means every twenty minutes look away twenty feet or more for at least twenty seconds from whatever device you’re using.
Other suggestions include putting more distance between you and the device and using good lighting. Of course, another way is to spend less time looking at screens. Many experts say children should spend no more than two hours a day using digital devices—with no screen time for children under two.
But not all eye doctors have noticed an increase in problems in children. Dr. David Hunter, from Children’s Hospital Boston, has not seen an increase in his practice. “While it is possible to develop fatigue looking at screens for a long period of time, there’s certainly no proof that it actually causes any damage(傷害)to the eyes.” he says.
1.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Dr. Bonilla-Warford thinks using computers causes nearsightedness. |
B.People keep their eyes protected against drying by blinking normally. |
C.Children under two can watch TV for less than two hours a day. |
D.Dr. David Hunter says headache causes an increase in eye problems. |
2.What does the underlined word “fatigue” mean?
A.Interest. |
B.Ability. |
C.Tiredness. |
D.Difficulty. |
3.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Looking at Screen: Two Hours or More |
B.How Can Children Use Their Eyes Properly |
C.Using Digital Devices: Advantages and Disadvantages |
D.How Much Screen Time Is Too Much for Children |
