Over-dried Earth

The south-west of the United States, together with some parts of Mexico across the Rio Grande, is one of the driest parts of the North American continent. But, over the past two decades, even that expected dryness 1 (take) to the limit. According to Park Williams, who works at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the current lack of rainfall in the area constitutes a megadrought of a severity 2(see) on only four other occasions in the past 1,200 years.

Dr Williams studies the annual growth rings of 1,586 ancient trees, in order to reconstruct soil-moisture patterns going back to 800 A.D. During warm, wet years trees grow fast, producing wide rings. During cold, dry 3 they grow more slowly, producing narrow rings. During a drought, a tree 4 not grow much at all.

5they describe in this week’s Science, the team identified dozens of droughts over the centuries in question. But four stood out. They then took the average soil-moisture value for the current drought and compared it with sequential(連續(xù)的) 19-year averages with the previous four, one of them 6(last) nearly a century. This showed that the region is already drier than it was during the first three of the previous megadroughts, and is equivalent to the event of 1575-1603.

In a world 7 human actions are driving temperatures up, Dr Parker and his colleagues wondered how much people are 8(blame) for this state of affairs. To estimate that, they turned to climate modelling.

Climate models are able to re-run the past with and 9 the warming effects of human activity, offering a way to compare what actually happened with what might have done. In their simulated world in which anthropogenic(人類起源的) emissions had not increased the greenhouse-gas effect, the team found that a drought did indeed still influence the western reaches of North America during the first two decades of the 21st century. But this imaginary dry spell was considerably 10(severe) than the real one-ranking 11th rather than 2nd in the period under study (see chart).

故填has been taken。

megadrought of a severity承受動詞see的動作,使用過去分詞作后置定語。

故填might/may。

故填As

故填where。

be to blame for:為…… 故填to blame。

由下文的“anthropogenic emissions had not increased the greenhouse-gas effect(人為排放并沒有增加溫室氣體的影響)”可知,此處應填入介詞with的反義詞without,即without the warming effects of human activity(沒有人類活動導致的變暖影響),這兩部分是同義表達。故填without。

現(xiàn)在完成時主動語態(tài):have/has + done;現(xiàn)在完成時的被動語態(tài):have/hasbeen done;現(xiàn)在完成時常用的標志性時間狀語:already,ever,never,yetjust,before,still,lately,since,for a long timeup to now,untilso far,in the last few years/weeks/months,till now,recently等。 故填has been taken

You are walking alone down the street. Suddenly, you hear footsteps. Is someone following you? How do you know the footsteps are someone else’s and not your own?

You can tell because your brain has the ability to ignore certain sounds, according to a study from New York University. Because of this, we often ignore our own footsteps. But we may easily hear others’ footsteps.

Scientists tested this on mice. They found that when mice became familiar with the sound of their own footsteps, they developed a “sensory filter (感覺過濾器)”, according to David Schneider, one of the lead authors of the study. This allowed the mice to ignore the sounds of their own footsteps. They could more easily notice the sounds of their environment.

“For mice, this is really important,” Schneider told Science Daily. “They need to listen for a cat getting close to them, even when they’re walking and making noise.”

Our brains don’t just ignore our footsteps. We also ignore some other sounds that we make ourselves, including the sound of eating, breathing heavily and typing on a keyboard. Being able to ignore these unimportant noises lets us focus on more important and dangerous ones. For example, we are quick to notice the sound of a baby crying. So we can rush to make sure they are okay and keep them alive. The same idea applies to humans screaming. When we hear this sound, we can quickly go to help the screaming person.

1What help(s) mice ignore the sounds of their own footsteps?

A. The environment.B. Their sensory filters.

C. Cats’ footsteps.D. A study from New York.

2What do human brains normally fail to notice?

A. Others’ footsteps.B. Human’s screaming.

3How does ignoring some sounds benefit humans?

A. More important things can be focused on.

B. People can stay calm in face of danger.

C. It’s easy to stay healthy and strong.

D. People tend to do dangerous things.

4What can we learn from the text?

A. More studies on human brains are needed.

B. Mice are very helpful in human brain studies.

C. Ignoring certain sounds helps mice survive.

D. Screaming and crying are unimportant noises.

What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You?

Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter? Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here's how it works.

Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two of the same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate description of your personality.

●Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker

If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you're likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You're more likely to take risks, and you're good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.

●Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One

If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted(內(nèi)向的),but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you're trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you're always wishing for more.

●Index and ring finger are of the same length: The Peacemaker

If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you're pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.

How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in my case, but I'm not going to tell you which one it was!

1Which of the following hand could be an engineer's hand?

A. B.

C. D.

2What does the passage intend to tell us?

A. How accurate the description of the test is.

B. The length of fingers can reveal personality.

C. Why your fingers are not of the same length.

D. Personality is determined by your finger length.

3Where can you probably find the text?

A. An official report.

B. A biology textbook.

C. A popular magazine.

D. A public advertisement.
