18.Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺騙)?When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included,he can give you a false picture.
For example, some might say,"I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票).It was great.I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"
This guy is a winner, right?Maybe, maybe not.We then discover that he bought  $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth.Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick.Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says,"During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!"That's true. However,an honest statement would have been,"During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths.It's against the law to make false statements,so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say,"Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache."It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life:Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
29.We may infer that the author believes people shouldD
A.buy lottery tickets if possible
B.make use of half-truths
C.be careful about what they are told
D.not trust the Yucky Company
30.How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?C
A.one             B.Two              C.Three             D.Four
31.Which of the following is true according to the passage?D
A.Using half truths is against the law.
B.Technically, half truths are in fact lies.
C.Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.
D.Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

15.Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten,according to a 20-year study recently published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25and found a significant correlation(相關(guān)性) between their social skills as kindergartners and their success as adults two decades later.
In 1991,teachers assessed how the kindergartners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without prompting(激勵),if they're helpful to others,whether they're good at understanding feelings,and if they can solve problems on their own.
Researchers then kept track of whether the students went on to graduate high school on time,get a college degree,and find and keep a full-time job by 25.They also monitored the participants'involvement with crime,drug abuse,public assistance,and mental health issues.
The results showed that socially competent children were far more likely to earn a college degree and have a full-time job by 25than those with limited social skills.Those with limited social skills also had a higher chance of getting arrested,binge(放縱) drinking,and applying for public housing.
"This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future,"said Kristin Schubert,program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,which funded the research,in a release."From an early age,these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison,and whether they end up employed or addicted."The good news,according to Damon Jones,lead author of the study,is that intervention(干預(yù)) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills."This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social competence can lead to better outcomes later on,"he said."But when combined with other research,it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school,work,and life."
8.What has the 20-year study found?D
A.Most kindergartners can solve problems alone.
B.Helpful children understand others feeling better.
C.Outgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.
D.Social skills play a key role in children's development.
9.Paragraph 3and 4are mainly about?C
A.when the researchers began their study
B.how long it took to complete the study
C.how the researchers conducted the study
D.what factors were studied by the experts
10.What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?A
A.Teach them how to cooperate with others.
B.Teach them some basic living skills.
C.Tell them to keep off alcohol.

2.FOR most people,life without plants is unimaginable.They feed us,clean up our air and brighten up our gardens.But what if someone told you that even our smartphones can benefit from plants?
Meet the scientists from the Freiburg University of Mining and Technology in Germany.According to reports from Reuters,they have come up with a way to take the important element germanium (鍺) from plants.
The element was first discovered in Germany (hence the name) and was used to develop the first transistor (晶體管) because it can transport electricity very quickly.Nowadays,silicon-germanium alloy (硅鍺合金) plays an important role in making computers,smartphones and fiber-optic cables (光纖電纜).
Although germanium can be found in soil around the world,it is difficult to extract (提。甀n the traditional process,people take the material after zinc (鋅) mining or burning coal.But the Freiburg scientists decided to fall back on the natural world.
Biology professor Hermann Heilmeier is one of the scientists who are using common plants for this uncommon process."Different energy crops are being planted,for example,sunflowers,corn…we want to use them for phytomining.In German we call it‘mining with plants'."
Others have used this method in the past with metals like gold and copper (銅).But in their study,the Freiburg scientists brought germanium from the soil into the roots and shoots of the plants,harvested them and then took the element from the plants.The process did not cost too much because germanium can be taken after plants are processed for use as biogas (沼氣).So many of the costs are already covered in existing biogas plants.
However,there is still a lot of work to do before we can all experience the benefits.At the moment germanium can only be harvested in very small amounts,just a few milligrams per liter.Now scientists are working on different plants to improve this.
"As is so often the case,industry is still waiting because they want to see everything already working.Then they say,‘We'll have it.'But of course we have to complete the step in between first,"said Professor Martin Bertau,head of industrial chemistry at Freiburg University.

67.We can learn from the article that germaniumB.
A.is mostly produced in Germany
B.can effectively transfer electricity
C.exists mostly in soil and water
D.is very easy to get from nature
68.What can we conclude from the article?D
A.Germanium can be easily produced during the process of mining zinc or burning coal.
B.Sunflowers and corn are currently the most efficient plants to use when extracting germanium.
C.The process of harvesting germanium from plants isn't costly because after harvesting,the plants can be used for biogas.
D.The new method for extracting germanium that the Freiburg scientists are trying is greener and cheaper than the traditional one.
69.According to the article,phytominingC.
A.is a completely new method for extracting metals
B.has been widely used in extracting all kinds of rare metals
C.has different productivity depending on the type of energy crop
D.is now being tested on types of plants that it has never been tried on
70.Which of the following statements would Professor Martin Bertau agree with?D
A.Many businesses have already started contributing money to this research.
B.Industry and science have stronger and closer connections than is generally expected.
C.People from related industries showed no interest in extracting germanium from plants.
D.Germanium has to be extracted from plants in large quantities before this type of extraction becomes industrialized.

19.Christmas is long gone,and Valentine's Day is a distant memory.That means it's a slow time for jewelers,and a good time for you to make a purchase.Whether you're out shopping for gold,or silver,here fife a few things you need to know:
What determines price?
The purity of the metal is one of the elements that determines the price.Gold purity is indicated with a stamp of 10K,14K,18K,or 24K.And different countries have their own standards.For example,for a piece to be considered gold in the US,it must be at least 10K.In Britain and Canada:9K.In Italy and France:l8K.Anything over l8K is really too soft for everyday wear.That's why jewelry stores in the US sell mostly 14K.
How much can you expect to pay?
That depends on the weight of the metal and the gemstone(寶石).So keep that in mind,especially when buying online.To keep yourself from getting ripped off, ask yourself the following:
●How long has the company been around?
●What is its return policy?
●Is the jewelry featured on the website visible from all directions?
●Is the company transparent with the gram weights and the size of the gemstones?
Yellow gold?White?Rose?
Yes,it's confusing,and while this is largely a personal decision,there are a few things to keep in mind.For starters,white or rose gold costs about l 0% more than yellow gold.If you want the"look for less",consider gold plated jewelry."Gold plated"and"gold overlay"mean the same thing and guarantee a thicker layer of finish than"vermeil"which is a flash finish that is thinner and less consistent,but more affordable.Buy vermeil finished pieces you want for a season or two just to follow the fashion.For pieces you want to wear for a lifetime,solid gold is best.
What about sterling silver(標準純銀)?
Sterling silver has been an alternative for white gold during the difficult economy,and while it used to be more popular with just the younger these days it has much more mass appeal.So much so that retailers are now offering fine gemstones with silver--something you used to see only with gold.
Keep in mind that in the US.the sterling silver standard is 92.5% real silver.Don't buy it if there isn't a"925"stamp on it.And keep in mind that the lower price you're paying for silver means more maintenance.To keep silver jewelry from becoming less shiny,consider keeping a piece of chalk in your jewelry box.

60.According to the passage,the underlined phrase"getting ripped off"in Paragraph 3probably means"C".

D.A gemstone necklace.
62.We can infer from the last paragraph that silver jewelry should be keptA
A.in a dry place      B.in a cold place
C.in a wet place      D.in a hot place
