“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can   41  on, one day something good will happen. And you’ll   42  that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college. I had designed myself for a 43  announcer(播音員). So I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got   44  every time.
In one station, a kind lady told me that   45  stations wouldn’t risk employing a person without   46  since I had just graduated. “Go out in the town and find a small station that might give you a chance,” she said.
I returned to Dixon,   47  I had finished my high school education and had   48  in the school football team. My father said that our town had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to   49  its sports department(部門(mén)). The job sounded just   50  for me but I wasn’t hired.
My   51  had shown as if by design. “Everything happens for the best,” Mum   52  me. Dad offered me his car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport. The program director told me they had already hired a/an   53 .   54  I left his office, my frustration boiled over(發(fā)怒).I asked aloud, “  55  can a fellow get to be a sports announcer   56  he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
Suddenly, I heard the director   57 .“What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to   58  an imaginary game.
It was easy, and I did it without difficulty. The director was   59  and told me I would be broadcasting a game on the   60  Saturday.

本文主要圍繞著母親的教導(dǎo)“Everything happens for the best.”
carry on 在這里的意思是“繼續(xù),不放棄” 相當(dāng)于not give up。
結(jié)合下文can a fellow get to be a sports announcer sports announcer可知答案。
從后文那位lady 說(shuō)的話“Go out in the town and find a small station that might give you a chance.”
從空后的since I had just graduated 得知,“我沒(méi)有工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)。”
as 當(dāng)……
the coming Saturday 即the next Saturday。

Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job. Everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job,” her husband told her.
“Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can’t just yet.”
I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on the porch of a general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way?” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man. “He’s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn’t he move?” “Because it’s not hurting him bad enough.”
That’s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we’re wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our self-esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams.
Wilbur Wright once commented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning. I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldn’t wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.”
They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. And when things don’t change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack(劫持) their self-esteem, passion or dreams.
