To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok , Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago , “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (備忘錄) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1: Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park .To cover the cost of hiring a bus ,each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St.Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing their park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧運(yùn)動(dòng)),all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking(遠(yuǎn)足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aqueatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Students selecting basketball had better register(注冊(cè)) early.
B. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.
C. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.
D. Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.
It can be inferred from the passage that
A. students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.
B. every student can gain admission to one of the four sports
C. hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees
D. students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water
It can be concluded that
A. each sport will take only on hour
B. students will be charged for the four sports
C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak
D. teachers will accompany students on each sport
The purpose of the memo is to
A. attract students’interest in the programme
B. require the parents to select a sport for their child
C.help the staff explain the programme to the parents
D.remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time

One of New York's most beautiful and valuable buildings is in danger. The New York Public Library, in the heart of the city at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, may have to close its doors.
The library is a very special place. Even though it is in the busiest part of the city, it has grass and trees around it, and benches for people to sit on. Even more unusual in the crowded New York, its rooms are very large. The roof of the main reading room is fifty-one feet high. Here, a reader can sit and think and work in comfort.
And what books there are to work with. The library has over thirty million books and paintings. It owns one of the first copies of a Shakespeare play, a Bible printed by Gutenberg in the 15th century, and a letter written by Columbus in which he tells the finding of the new world.
Every New Yorker can see and use the library's riches free.
But the cost of running the library has risen rapidly in recent years, and the library does not have enough money to continue its work. In the past, it was open every evening and also on Saturdays and Sundays. Now it is closed at those times, to save money.
The library is trying in every possible way to raise money to meet its increasing costs. Well-known New York writers and artists are trying to help. So are the universities, whose students use the library, and the governments of the New York City and the New York State. But the problem remains serious.
Yet a way must be found to save the library because, as one writer said, “The Public Library is the most important building in New York City-it contains all our knowledge.”

B.He has to pay the library increasing costs.
C.Every New Yorker can visit the library freely, and use it with payment.
D.A New Yorker doesn't have to pay anything for the use of the library.
4.Why does the author say that the New York's Library is in danger?
[ ]

When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.
Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.
Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.
Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Tiangong-1 (or Heavenly Palace) space module(艙) is the first step toward China's plan to build a space station around 2020. Its launch by China has upset some countries, which are asking why China did not add on to the International Space Station that has been in place since 1998. After all, the Americans, Russians, Europeans and Japanese are using one platform to experiment in space.
Questions have also been asked about China's ultimate purpose in space and suggestions made that there is something as unpleasant as the theme in a James Bond movie, in which Chinese-looking enemies were at the root of some evil plot to control the world.
Chinese don't see themselves that way, and never in history have they been flag-planting colonialists. Most Westerners are schooled in the exploits of the great European explorers, headed by Christopher Columbus and James Cook, and followed closely by the groups of culture egotists(自大者) with a mix of guns, gold and the Bible in their hands.
In contrast, Zheng He, the great Chinese navigator, took fleets to Africa and the Middle East to promote goodwill, with gifts of chinaware and art. No flags claiming possession of distant colonies. But this is strange to Western society.
In this century, it is clear that space cannot be claimed by one nation. Yet advantage of technology in space does seem to be on some minds. Former US president Ronald Reagan caused shocks and worries with his ambitious Star Wars program. So when China shot down its own satellite as a test in January 2010 there were anxieties in the West about Star Wars-like scenario(劇本) becoming reality in the near future.
50. The launch of Tiangong-1____.
A. is appreciated by countries like the USA and Japan
B. will bring trouble to the western countries in space
C. is part of China’s plan to set up a station in space
D. will help China be a member of the Space Station
51. It is most probable that the US, Russia, Europe and Japan____.
A. are competing against one another in space wars
B. feel anxious about China’s setting up a space station
C. are cooperating to compete against China in space
D. have warned the world of China’s final purpose
52. The author of the passage mentions Zheng He____.
A. to tell people China will never be enemies of world peace
B. to compare him to the great European explorers like Columbus
C. to indicate that he is the pride of the Chinese people
D. to show that the Chinese people are as great as other peoples
53. From the last paragraph, we can infer that____.
A. China’s shooting down its satellite made the scenario become reality
B. some countries are trying to be ahead of the others in space exploration
C. China will be in control of the world if she starts space exploration
D. if a nation has a better technology in space, it will start a star war
