Shaping a child is like shaping clay(粘土)— you have to start from the beginning and work your way to the end with extreme caution but with gentle and loving 1. However, unlike clay, you don’t get a second 2 with a child. You can put all the clay back together and start again but with a child, what is done is done. 3 it’s even more caution with care.
Building a child’s esteem is no small play; it makes your black hair 4, steals away years of your life and still will not look done. Therefore you have to learn how to build self-esteem and 5 your child from the beginning. After all, parenting begins from babyhood.
Small case could leave large 6 on your child’s mind. Reason why you should not overlook something that went wrong. If another child 7 your kid, everyone laughed and you told your son to 8 it, that’s the first wrong step. You have to teach your child to 9 up for himself. Don’t let your child fall down inside. Tell him to ask the child why he is hitting him or 10 to the nearest adult he can reach.
Most of all before you speak to a child you have to be a 11 example. If you go around laughing at people, your kids will do the 12. If you are a coward(懦夫)yourself and do not stand up to situations, do not 13 your child not to follow you. Children are like monkeys—they copy every 14, from how you eat to how you handle situations.
Building self-esteem begins at home. Small self-confident acts make a(n) 15 impact on your child.

A Leap(跳躍)to Honor
Leaping on a narrow balance beam(平衡木) is not easy. But Lola Walter, a 13-year-old gymnast, is an expert at it.
To perfect her skills, Lola 1  for four hours a day, five days a week. At the state championships in March, she finished seventh out of 16 girls.
That’s especially impressive, 2   she is legally blind, born with a rare condition that causes her eyes to shift constantly. She often sees double and can’t 3 how far away things are.

She likes the determination it takes to do the sport. Her biggest 9 is the balance beam. Because she has double vision, she often sees two beams. She must use her sense of touch to help her during her routine. Sometimes she even closes her eyes. “You have to 10 your mind that it’ll take you where you want to go,” says Lola.
To be a top-level gymnast, one must be brave. The beam is probably the most 11 for anyone because it’s four inches wide. At the state competition, Lola didn’t fall 12 the beam. In fact, she got an 8.1 out of 10---- her highest score yet.
Lola doesn’t want to be 13   differently from the other girls on her team. At the competitions, the judges don’t know about her vision 14. She doesn’t tell them, because she doesn’t think they need to know. Her mom is amazed by her 15 attitude.
Lola never thinks about 16. She is presently at level 7 while the highest is level 10 in gymnastics. Her  17is to reach level 9. She says she wants to be a gymnastics coach to pass down what she’s learned to other kids 18 she grew up.
Lola is 19of all her hard work and success. She says it’s helped her overcome problems in her life outside gymnastics, too. Her 20 for others is “just believe yourself”.

As a young social worker in a New York City psychiatric clinic, I was asked to see Roz, a 20-year-old woman who had been referred to us from another psychiatric clinic. It was an1referral in that no information was received2her first appointment. I was told to “play it by ear”, and to3what her problems were and what she needed.
4an examination to go on, I saw Roz as an unhappy, misunderstood young woman who hadn’t been listened to in her earlier treatment. Her family situation was unpleasant. I didn’t see her as disturbed, 5rather as lonely and misunderstood. She responded so6to being heard. I encouraged her to start a life worth living — to find a job, a satisfying place to live and new relationships. We hit it off well, and she7making important changes in her life.
The records from the previous psychiatric clinic arrived a month after Roz and I began our successful work together. To my complete surprise, her records were several inches thick, 8a long period of psychiastric hospitalization. Her diagnosis was “paranoid schizophrenic(妄想型精神分裂癥)”, with a 9that she was “hopeless”.
That had not been my experience with Roz at all so I decided to forget those pieces of paper. I never treated her as if she had that “hopeless” treatment. I did find out about the horrors for Roz of the hospitalization, of being drugged, separated and abused. I also learned a lot from her about10such deeply and unforgettably shocking circumstances.
First Roz found a job, then a place to live away from her difficult11. After several months of working together, she introduced me to her husband-to-be, a successful businessman who adored her.

Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.
Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have 1 shocking differences in perception between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they are 2 of a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a(n) 3 science journal.
In Western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly 4 entities. When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, 5 inter-dependence, When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on the surroundings as well as the object.
Using an experiment 6 two tasks, Dr. Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that played to American’s 7. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asian.
The level of brain activity, by 8 blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brain were 9. For the Americans, areas 10 to attention were more favorable to them, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult --- estimating the line’s size relative to the square. The findings are a 11 of more than ten years of previous experimental research into East-West differences.
In one study, for instance researchers 12 people a choice among five pens; four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen, and Westerners were more likely to choose the green one.
Culture does not only make a(n) 13 on how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize it. But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us 14 to how our brain works and holds new promises for us to develop programs to improve our memory techniques and 15 our learning skills.
