1.Music is considered as a"universal language",without which our culture can't exist.We begin life affected by music; babies begin to respond to music before they are born.We often hear that playing music for your baby helps him or her become smarter.Recently,a piece of new research suggests that playing music to babies helps their brains to develop and leads them to become better communicators as they grow up,especially a faster rhythm song.
The study was led by Laurel Trainor,study author and director of the McMaster Institute for music and the Mind.Her paper was titled"Active music classes in babies enhance musical,communicative and social development".And the new research,published in the journal Development Science,shows that listening to music affects the development of the brain in babies.The Study looked at one-year-old babies.The babies showed positive response to interactive music classes,smiling more,communicating better,and showing changeable brain responses to music.
Laurel Trainor divided babies into two groups.In the first group were babies that took part in an interactive music-making class,where they and their-parents learned to play musical instruments and sing nursery rhymes and songs with actions.In the second group babies spent that time playing with various toys.
After six months,babies in the first group,who took part in the interactive classes were earlier sensitive to the high sounds in music.Babies from interactive music classes showed quicker brain responses to musical tones,while babies in the second group,who had been playing with toys,did not show such preferences.
The two groups of babies also showed differences in non-musical skills.Those who had taken part in the interactive classes showed better communication skills,like pointing at objects and waving goodbye,and smiled more.They were also easier to calm and seemed less anxious in unfamiliar situations.

18.Taking Questions
When giving presentations,it is common practice to encourage audience involvement and this often takes the form of questions from the audience.A good deal has been written recently discussing the advantages and disadvanges of various approaches to handling these.(71)E
One approach is to take questions as and when they arise.Usually there are only a few points from the audience but in the event of receiving too many, the presenter may move the presentation on by reminding the audience of the time, and offering to continue the discussion later.(72)BThose who aren't will simply have to wait.
(73)C A danger here is that too much time may be wasted on questions and,as a consequence, important parts of other main points have to be edited out.The audience may also confuse the presenter by asking about points that he or she intends to cover later in the presentation. If this happens,it is important to make the audience aware that answering their questions now might weaken the structure of the talk.
Alternatively,mid-point questions can be discouraged by signalling that you would prefer questions at the end.If you take this approach, however,it is important to bear in mind that when you get to the end,it may take a little time for people to reflect on what they have heard and to formulate a question.(74)F To overcome this,it is useful to have a chairperson who is prepared to ask the first question.
(75)A In that case, the safest response is to tell the truth. Then the rest of the audience may appreciate your honesty. It may also be possible to move the attention away from the questioner by asking other audience if anyone else can provide an answer.

A.Another potential problem is unfriendly questioners who ask the kind of questions they know will be difficult to answer.
B.A statement such as"I will come back to this point at the end"should keep most people happy.
C.Another approach is to ask for questions after each main point has been addressed.
D.It is a good idea to be aware of the traps that this type of questioners try to set.
E.However,my intention here is simply to present the most common approaches.
F.There is even the possibility that an embarrassing silence may ensure.
G.Seeking a question can be an effective way of moving the session on.

Recently, the increasing popularity of shared bikes has made our lives more convenient. However,my classmates and I often noticedsome shared bikesplaced messily everywhere. We felt upsetand decided to make a change to the uncivilizedbehavior.
First,we had a heated discussion about the problem at our class meeting. We shared our ideas and came up with a great plan. After making full preparations,we startedto take action.
On Saturday morning,we gathered outside the subway station near our school.Firstly,we began with those messy shared bikesthere and tried to put themin order.People passing by all appreciated what we did.Seeing the bikes in rows on the pavement,we really felt excited. Then,in order to encourage people's civilized behavior, weput upa poster saying"PLEASE BE CIVILIZED WHILE USING A SHARED BIKE".Meanwhile, some of us helped to give out leaflets.Of course,we drew much attention from the passers-by.Hopefully our action would make a difference.
This experience actually inspires me a lot.The idea of sharing requires people's awareness of civilization. When the uncivilized behavior occurs,it is our duty to do our best to stop it.I strongly believe that in this way our society will become better and better..

13.Community Service
Nowadays high schools are faced with a very controversial issue whether or not community service hours are needed to graduate.High schools are arguing that 40 hours of community service are needed to graduate, but many upset students are voicing protests(反對) to this demand.
Supporters of the community service project argue that while high school students are participating in community service,they will become better aware of what the real world is like.Students will learn valuable life lesson by doing community service.(71 )A They feel that if high school students are forced to do community service they will begin to see it as a punishment and as something that they have to do because it is required instead of something that they want to do.Students will in the future look back at the community service projects that they were forced to do throughout high school.(72 )D
Another idea that the protestors give about this community service issue is time restriction.When a student goes to school full time,he is involved in after-class activities and also works.(73 )G Supporters argue back that high school students only need to fulfill 40 hours of community service throughout 4years.If students well manage their time and start the community service in their first year in high school,all they need to do is an hour every other week.(74)B The protestors argue that high school students do not have their driver's license,so how are they expected to get to their community service site when their parents or friends are at work or just too busy to give them a ride.(75)F.The supporters argue that students can find community service projects close to home or if they live in the country find another student to car pool with.
In my opinion, community service is a wonderful thing that everyone should be required to do at some point in their life, but are high school students mature and responsible enough to take on community service projects at this stage in their life?

A.Protestors have struck back with a very solid argument.
B.A final controversial issue that appears is transportation.
C.Students will feel good about themselves for helping others in need.
D.They will continue to carry a negative attitude towards community service for their lifetime.
E.Both sides have solid arguments about why community service should or should not be forced upon students.
F.Unless the school offers a means of transportation for the students there really is no solution to this problem.
G.The time that is needed to participate in a community service project may place quite a burden on the student.
