【題目】When someone has been bitten by a snake, try to find out if the snake is poisonous or harmless. Their bite marks are usually different. The bite of most of most poisonous snake leaves marks of two fangs(毒牙). If the bit of a snake leaves only two rows of teeth marks, but no fang marks, it is less likely that the snake is poisonous.

People often believe that certain harmless snakes are poisonous. Try to find out which of the snakes in your ares are truly poisonous and which are not. Please do not kill non-poisonous snakes, because they do no harm. On the contrary, they kill mice and other pests that do lots of damage. Some even kill poisonous snakes.

Here is some treatment for poisonous snakebite:

*Stay quiet: don’t move the bitten part. The more it’s moved, the faster the poison will spread through the body. If the bite is on the foot, the person should not walk at all. Send for medical hep.

*Remove jewellery because swelling can spread rapidly.

*Wrap the bitten are with a wide elastic bandage or clean cloth to slow the spread of poison. Keeping the arm or leg very still, wrap it tightly, but not so tight that it stops the pulse(脈搏)at the wrist or on top of the foot. If you cannot feel the pulse, loosen the bandage a little.

*Wind the bandage over the hand or foot, and up the whole arm or leg. Make sure you can still feel the pulse.

*Carry the person, on a stretcher(擔(dān)架)if possible, to the nearest health center. If you can also take the snake, because different snakes may require different antivenoms(抗毒血清).

*Poisonous snakebite is dangerous. Send for medical help----but always do the things explained above at once. Some treatments, such as cutting the skin around the bite and sucking the venom out of the bite, can cause infection. And remember: Never drink alcohol after snakebite. It makes things worse!

1What is the purpose of paragraph 2?

A. To introduce us to different kinds of snakes.

B. To tell us how to recognize poisonous snakes.

【題目】Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon called the selfie(自拍). It refers to a picture of yourself, usually shared on any social networking website.

1Some selfies are extreme close-ups(特寫鏡頭), and others show part of an arm held straight outward. A few of them even feature the subject standing in front of a bathroom mirror.

Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend. Young people are relatively heavier digital users. They are interested in staying connected to their friends.2.

There are also kinds of psychological factors driving people to take a selfie and upload it to a social networking site.3 A quick and easy way to attract other's attention is to get "likes" and comments from friends. Secondly, it's human nature to show off your own great achievements. When you feel good about yourself or look good, it's far too easy to take out your phone and document it all through one or several selfies.4That's right. Sometimes people are bored at work, bored at school, bored at home and even bored on the toilet. Last but not least, social media is about being social! If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. It's fun, and it's a cool way to sort of document your own life.

Finally, there are things to be mindful of when you're posting. It's easy to think you're sharing a photo with a few people.5So don't post anything online, selfie especially.

A. There are lots of selfie styles.

B. The rise of selfies has become universal.

C. Social media, to some extent, is the driving force of their selfie activity.

D. The desire to take, post and get "likes" on selfies goes back to a biological behavior.

E. But the whole world of social media is public and every individual can get access to it.

F. There are also people who will take selfies because they have nothing else better to do.

G. The leading factor is that people want to get attention from as many people as possible.

【題目】Kids and food: advice for parents

It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways:

Parents control the supply lines.

1 Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. They’ll eat what’s available in the fridge at home.

Say goodbye to “clean-plate club”.

2 Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they’re likely to overeat.

3

Food preferences are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions(時(shí)機(jī)) for a child to accept it.

Food is not love.

Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. 4

Kids do as you do.

5 When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example. Choose nutritious food, eat at the table, and don’t forget breakfast.

A. Start them young.

B. Rewrite the kids’ menu.

C. Be a role model and eat healthy yourself.

D. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.

E. Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough.

F. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.

G. Let kids choose what to eat and how much of it they want.

【題目】For humans, climbing Mount Qomolangma is seen as a great impressive achievement. People make movies, write books, and have essentially developed a whole industry surrounding the challenge that is this mountain. While we consider climbing the mountain as an athletic achievement, there is one animal, the bar-headed goose, does not think so.

As the species migrates (遷徙) from Central Asia to Southeast Asia every autumn, it must cross over the Himalayan range. These mountains force the bar-headed goose to fly at around 30,000 feet above sea level, which is the highest altitude for migratory birds.

These geese have special adaptions that allow them to survive at the altitude. For example, a special protein (蛋白質(zhì)) in blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body allows their blood cells to combine with oxygen. Their circulatory system provides a constant supply of fresh, oxygenated blood to their wing muscles (肌肉). They have much larger lungs than other birds, which give them the ability to take in more air.

Scientists initially believe that the geese flow at an extremely high altitude for the full length of their migration. But later the data suggests that the birds use a much more effective way of travel. Instead of remaining at an extremely high altitude to fly over the mountain range, the geese hug the mountains, flying up and down depending on the obstacles (障礙物) in their way. This works better for them because they don’t have to use all their energy flying in an area with low oxygen; they can spend time flying at lower altitudes.

The geese also make use of nature to make this work easier. To fly down, they simply allow gravity to pull them. To fly back up, they make use of orographic (地形的) lift, which happens when flowing air meets an obstacle, such as a mountain. The mountain forces the air up, creating an upward draft. The birds take advantage of this draft, expending less of their own energy to fly up the mountain.

The way these birds have adapted to flying across the Asian continent during their annual migration is certainly an amazing way to see nature at work.

1What does the underlined part "this work” in Paragraph 5 most probably refer to?

A. To fly down. B. To fly back up.

C. To fly over the mountain. D. To fly at lower altitudes.

2How do the geese behave while crossing over the Himalayan range?

A. By flowing at an extremely high altitude all the way.

B. By taking advantage of the orographic lift.

C. By smoothing the obstacles in their way.

D. By forcing the air up, creating an upward draft.

3What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. The geese’s amazing migration.

B. The highest flying record of geese.

C. The flying mystery of geese.

D. Mount Qomolangma and its geese.
