People with interesting personalities often have more opportunities open to them because of their ability to maintain the attention of others. When you meet or talk to someone with this kind of disposition, you
may feel as though your personality is dull and uninspiring.   1
Listen to what others have to say. Most people enjoy talking about their lives and themselves, so
become more interested and you will seem more interesting.    2   Look them directly in the eyes and ask
them questions or comment on what they have just told you, instead of just waiting for your turn to talk
about yourself.
3  Watch the news, read books, and pay attention. If you don't know about a particular topic,
research it and form an opinion on it. People like to be around others who can carry on conversations
about lots of things.
Look for the humor in every situation. A sense of humor can work wonders for a dull personality, so
laugh as often as you can and you'll be a more naturally attractive person. Laughter can also get rid of your stress to a degree.    4
Accept and love yourself and others. When you dislike yourself and your personality, other people pick up on this, and they may assume they shouldn't like you, either.    5
Judge other people less as well; gossip and speaking poorly of others can seem like good short-term
entertainment, but in the long run it can make you seem dull and untrustworthy.
A. Form opinions on everything.
B. Make everyone you speak to feel important.
C. Your brain will see these situations as reality.
D. Search for the best in yourself and everyone else.
E. When you feel better, you're more fun to be around.
F. You'd better make a few simple changes to your outlook.
G. But it's relatively easy to develop those personalities that you find so interesting.

It's not uncommon in America for a person to belong to some kind of volunteer group. Donating
one's time and services is very much a part of the American way of life. Most charitable activities are
organized by churches and groups around the nation and even encouraged by the government. The
helping hand is extended to the poor, the homeless and the disabled. Some people work to teach
youngsters how to read. others open up soup kitchens to feed the homeless. Volunteers also take care
of the disabled by making reading tapes for the blind and working in orphanages (孤兒院) to help
children without parents.
High school students are often encouraged to become volunteers and many school club activities
center around volunteer services. Students may work with disabled children during a summer program,
or participate in a club activity which helps to bring meal to senior citizens who are shut-ins. With their
sense of idealism (理想主義) students are often eager to donate their spare time. They see such
activities as a way of becoming involved in the community and the adult-world. Social action for them
becomes as important as their academic studies.
In a like manner, throughout the year, fund raising drives are also conducted by schools and
community groups to raise money for a worthy cause. They may respond to a recent earthquake in a
foreign country, a flood somewhere within their own, or another natural disaster which has left people
destitute and homeless. They may organize drives to collect food, clothing and medicines to serve an
immediate need. Today even the Halloween custom of 'trick or treat' has become an occasion to collect
money for a charitable cause.
This call to help those less fortunate than themselves arises from the humble origins of the American
nation. Those immigrants who were poor and downtrodden (受壓迫的) became dependent on the
kindness of their neighbors to make a new life for themselves.
American volunteers work throughout the world in less developed countries. They volunteer by
serving as a champion of goodwill both at home and abroad, which no doubt enriches both his life and
those whom he serves.

If women are mercilessly exploited (剝削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame.
Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are
always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a
few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a
woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe (衣柜) packed full of clothes and announcing
sadly that she has nothing to wear.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast
sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to
throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing the dresses they have. Skirts are
lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can say that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion
designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用).They are
only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with
any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some
time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or carefully picking
her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious.
Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of
inconstancy (易變) and instability?Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers.
Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to
decide.
1. How do designers and big stores take advantage of women?
A. By mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry.
B. By attaching great importance to quality in women's clothing.
C. By constantly changing the fashions in women's clothing.
D. By producing large number of new clothes.
2. To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as          .
A. a waste of money
B. a waste of time
C. an expression of taste
D. an expression of creativity
3. Perhaps the writer would not be so critical           .
A. if fashion designers could pay attention to the comfort of clothing
B. if fashion industry could contribute more to society
C. if women took their safety and health in consideration
D. if women didn't put up with any discomfort
4. By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious" in Paragraph 4 the writer means that        .
A. women's inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at
B. women are better able to put up with discomfort
C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers
D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion
5. What's the passage mainly about?
A. Men are wiser than women in choosing clothes.
B. Women are taken advantage of because they always follow clothing fashions.
C. Women should be blamed for following clothing fashions.
D. Changing fashions have greatly contributed to social development.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never
been before.
But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed
when online.   1   imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.
For anything you're about to send, ask yourself, "Would I say this to the person's face?" If the answer
is no, rewrite and reread.   2   If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct ( 本能) is to fire
back in the same manner. But try not to do so.   3    if it was caused by a disagreement with another
member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of
others in the chat room.
4     offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to
communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long
answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel

the difficult weather conditions.
TransLink chief executive officer Peter Strachan said bus and train services were continuing to run
where possible, however all CityCat and CityFerry services had been cancelled until further notice.
"These are extremely difficult conditions for South East Queensland-we are running essential services
where possible but safety remains to be the most important," Mr Strachan said.
"Severe weather and associated flooding has impacted on all modes of public transport, with bus,
ferry and train services all impacted to varying degrees.
"If you are planning to use public transport at anytime over the next few days, then I would

Service disruptions (中斷) for today include:
City network trains running hourly on all lines.
lBus diversions, delays and cancellations in some regions, particularly across Brisbane, Ipswich and the
Sunshine Coast.
     CityCat and CityFerry services cancelled.
Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Paul Scurrah said rising waterways had closed some train lines,
and road closures and damage to property throughout the South-East had contributed to a shortage of
available rail employees.
"We intend to run trains hourly on all lines, similar to the timetable we operate on Christmas Day. We
will also be looking to run other additional services to meet demand as required. At this stage we will run
services stopping at all stations which will depart at the same time on the hour, however, this is all subject
to the weather conditions and the availability of traincrew."
Mr Scurrah encouraged all customers to visit the Translink website for specific departure times for
their station, and asked for patience in the event of delays.
"Queensland Rail appreciates that reduced services may cause disruptions but it is simply unavoidable. We have a dedicated and experienced team monitoring the situation around the clock and will be working

Treasure Island isn't a true story, but the characters do seem to loan out of the pages alive,
armed to the teeth and ready to go treasure hunting
. But you will find, as you read this book, that
although pirates can be murderous and treacherous (奸詐的),they can also be cowardly, superstitious,
and easily led. As it turns out, that is fortunate for Jim Hawkins.
It's a brilliant story. Billy Bones, a retired seaman, comes to live at the Admiral Benbow inn. Jim is
just a boy, but he can see that Billy Bones is a nervous man, always on the look-out for strangers arriving
at the inn. And well he might be nervous, because he carries with him in his battered old sea-chest a map
drawn by Captain Flint himself giving the whereabouts of all Flint's buried treasure! Captain Flint! -the
most feared pirate ever to travel the high seas.
Well,Flint is dead, but there are plenty of men who served with Captain Flint still alive who will feel
they have a fair claim to the treasure. The map, though, ends up in the possession of Jim Hawkins-(it's a
near thing, read the book to see how that happens)
Jim tells the secret in the local doctor, who quickly joins forces to acquire a ship and crew to sail for
Treasure Island
There's a famous scene where Jim, hiding in the apple barrel on deck, discovers that mutiny (叛亂) is
planned. It's a bad moment. The numbers suggest that the pirates are going to have it all their own way.
There are nineteen mutineers and seven honest men, including Jim.     And now, you will have to read the
book for yourself. This is a fantastic tale of cheat, bravery and cowardice. I don't know how things would have turned out if it hadn't been for Jim Hawkins. For it is Jim who single-handedly steals the Hispaniola
from under the very noses of the pirates and sails her round the island to a secret beaching place.
And do you know what happens to Long John Silver, the greatest double-crosser of them all? No?
Well, don't expect me to tell you. Don't be nervous of reading a 'classic'. I know it was published a long
time ago, but that doesn't mean it is difficult to read. There is one piece of advice I will give, though. I
don't think this book is ever out of print---there are hundreds of different copies around. If you can,
choose a copy with large enough print to be able to read comfortably, and exciting illustrations. It makes
all the difference.
Go ahead! Read the book. I think you'll love it.
