I get off the bus and walk a few blocks. I stop when I get to a garage-like place and walk to the metal door with brown paint. I turn the knob(把手)and walk in. A thousand eyes look at me as I take my place at the end of the long line. When I finally get up to the window, I hand the officer my ID. “I’m here to visit Mr C. Yes, I’m his daughter.”
I learn that line by heart. The officer hands me a piece of paper with my name as the visitor and my father’s as the prisoner. It tells me which floor to go to. As I get on the elevator, a rush of excitement runs through me. Then I go to the eighth floor, look around and see the faces I see here every Sunday and Thursday.
There he is. I stand on tiptoe(腳尖)to get a better view since I can hardly see him. He doesn’t look like my father. He’s got a beard now and he looks a lot weaker. He’s the dad that I see through a window. My dad who is separated from the world. The only place he now knows is his room in the prison. When I look deep into his eyes, I see emptiness and pain.
It’s difficult to hear him through the thick glass and over everyone else who is trying to talk. We try to carry on a normal conversation about simple things including my day and what I’m doing in school, but we mostly talk about how we can’t wait until he gets out. After an hour my time is up. We say our good-byes and love-yous.
I get on the bus to go home. My favorite place is where my father is—prison. I know, how can prison be anyone’s favorite place? But it is because my father is there. It’ll no longer be my favorite place once he gets out, though—home will be.

閱讀理解

Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of second-hand smoke, but experts now have found another smoking-related threat to children's hearth:third-hand smoke.

That's the expression which is used to describe the invisible yet poisonous gases that stick to smokers' hair and clothing and other things in the room. These gases stay long after smoke has cleared from the room.Young children can get them on their hands, especially if they are playing on the floor.

“Everyone knows that second-hand smoke is bad, but they don't know about this,”said Dr.Jonathan P.Winickoff, the lead author of the study at Harvard Medical School.

“When their kids are out of the house, they might smoke.Or they smoke in the car. They think it's okay because the second-hand smoke isn't getting to their kids.”Dr Winickoff continued.

Third-hand smoke is what one smells when a smoker gets in an elevator(電梯)after going outside for a cigarette, or in a hotel room where people smoked.“Your nose isn't lying.”he said.“The smell is so bad that your brain is telling you:‘Get away’”.

But far fewer people realized the risks of third-hand smoke.Since the expression is so new, the researchers asked people if they agreed with the statement that“breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of children.”O(jiān)nly 65% of nonsmokers and 43% of smokers agreed with that statement.

“The central message here is that simply closing the kitchen door to take a smoke is not protecting the kids from the effects of that smoke,”said another doctor.“There are substances(物質(zhì))in this third-hand smoke, and they are a cancer risk for anybody of any age who comes close to them.”

The fact that third-hand smoke is harmful will most probably lead to a strict smoking ban(禁止)at home.

(1)

You're experiencing third-hand smoke if you ________.

[ ]

A.

smell something strange in a hotel room

B.

live in a house where a smoker will move in

C.

enter a kitchen whose door was closed by a smoker

D.

stay in an office where someone smoked last night

(2)

What do Dr Winickoff's words in Paragraph 5 mean?

[ ]

A.

If people smoked in a room, you can tell it.

B.

Your nose sometimes gives wrong information.

C.

If you want to smoke, your nose will warn you.

D.

Sometimes your brain can tell lies.

(3)

From the passage, we can learn that ________.

[ ]

A.

the substances in third-hand smoke are sure to cause cancer

B.

most people know the bad sides of third-hand smoke

C.

third-hand smoke is worse than second-hand smoke

D.

smoking may not be allowed at home at all.
