On a very cold evening in northern Virginia many yean ago, an old man was waiting for a ride across the
river. Anxiously (焦急地), he watched as several horsemen passed by, then another. Finally, the last rider
came to the place where the old man sat. As this one drew near, the old man caught the rider's eyes and said,
"Sir, would you mind giving an old man a ride to the other side?"
Reining (勒隹韁繩) his horse, the rider replied, "Sure." Seeing the old man was unable to lift his half-frozen
(凍得半僵的) body from the ground, the rider got off the horse and helped the old man onto it. He took the
old man not only across the river, but also to his house, which was just a few miles away.
As they came to his house, the rider's curiosity (好奇心) caused him to ask the old man, "Sir, I noticed
that you let several other riders pass by without asking for help. Then I came up and you immediately asked
me for a ride. What would happen if I had refused and left you there?"
The old man lowered himself slowly down from the horse, looked the rider straight in the eyes and replied,
I've been there for some time. I think I know people well. I looked into the eyes of the other riders and
immediately saw there was no worry about my situation. It would have been useless even to ask them for a
ride. But when I looked into your eyes, I saw kindness and compassion (同情)? I knew you would give me
a hand."
Those words moved the rider deeply. He said to the old man, "I am very grateful for what you have said.
May (但愿) I never get too busy with my own things that I fail to help others with kindness and compassion."
1. The old man found that the last rider was _____.

D. indifferent (漠不關(guān)心的)

B. He only took the old man across the river.
C. He took the old man to his house at last.
D. He asked the old man to get on the horse himself.
3. The old man let several other riders pass by without asking for help because _____.
A. he was so frozen that he couldn't say a word
B. he was too nervous to ask them for help
C. he couldn't see kindness and compassion in their eyes

4. By saying "May I never get too busy with my own things that I fail to help others with kindness and

People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it’s not bad to make mistakes, and here is way.
At first, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things, because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try new things, how can you improve? How can you create? The simple answer is, “You can’t.” Look around you, everything you see is the result of someone trying new things.
Another good thing about mistake is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this : Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb. When he was asked how he felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learnt 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are that much closer to success. Why? Because you have said what you should say, and you have done what you should do. Every time you make a mistake, you are closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try new things you have to think them over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes.
We shouldn’t spend all our time and money on the only one way, but use them correctly. Because our time and money are limited(有限的) .
There is an old saying, “ If you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough.” So go bravely and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures (壓力) from their parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and harder so that they can have a wonderful life when they grow up. Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students who aren't gifted (天賦) enough. Many of them have tried very hard at study but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hope. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers' work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents sent their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends. They only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them very real sense of the world.

Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students to their clothes and things in their schoolbags. Child psychologists (心理學(xué)家) now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for others, even for their parents.
