7、Most American kids love Halloween treats, but a bucket of Halloween candy can be a dentist’s nightmare. Some parents try to get rid of half of the candy after their children go to bed, but dentists say parents also need to separate the good kinds of treats from the bad.

It is not exactly what a child eats that truly matters, but how much time it stays in his mouth. According to pediatric dentist Dr. Kaneta Lott, the most damaging stuff is something that is sticky or very hard and thus stays in the mouth for a long time. This is because we all have bacteria in our mouths. When we eat, the bacteria take our food as their food and produce an acid that destroys the surface of the teeth, causing cavities to form. The longer the food stays in the mouth, the more likely cavities will develop. Therefore, potato chips are worse than candy because they get stuck between teeth. For the same reason, raisins and crackers are not the best choice. Hard candies take a long time to consume and are also a bad choice for Halloween treats.

If children really love candy, dentists recommend that they eat chocolate instead. Unlike hard candies, chocolate dissolves quickly in the mouth. Besides, chocolate contains tannins, which help to kill some of the bacteria in the mouth. But no matter what a child eats, brushing after each meal is still the best way to fight cavities.

1.What is the main purpose of this passage?

A.To discuss how cavities can be treated.

B.To point out the problems with Halloween celebrations.

C.To tell parents what sweets are less damaging to their children’s teeth.

D.To teach parents the meaning of Halloween candies for their children.

2.Why are hard candies especially bad for teeth?

A.They may break the child’s teeth.        B.They help bacteria to produce tannins

C.They contain too much sugar.              D.They stay in the mouth for a long time.

3.According to the passage, which of the following is a better choice for Halloween treats?

     A.Chocolate.         B.Crackers.           C.Raisins.             D.Potato chips.

4.According to the passage, which of the following is true of tannins?

A.They are produced when the bacteria digest the food.

B.They help to get rid of some bacteria in the mouth.

C.They help chocolate to dissolve more quickly.

D.They destroy the surface of the teeth.

6、Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商),or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

Though we’re all born with SQ, most of us don’t even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding.

Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude (獨處) and silence. To tune in to your spirits, you have to turn down the volume (強度) in your busy, noisy, complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of listening to the music, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to your office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you are walking with the dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of birds and watch clouds float overhead.

Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling? What are my choices? Where am I heading?”

20090421

But don’t expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural form or e-mail. “Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my question,” says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito, California. “But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I never considered before.”

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on instinctive feeling to realize danger, spiritual intelligence pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

D.changing your way of thinking might help you solve a problem

4.From the passage, we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is       .

3、根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.   2  .

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.   3  It included such items as automobile sand new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “l(fā)ife-enriching”level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “l(fā)uxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.  4

One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.   5   In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

       A.Then a third level appeared.

       B.Human wants seem endless.

C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

D.There are several levels of wants in one’s life.

E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

G.Different people have different wants on each level.
