7、A sage presented a prince with a set of small dolls. The prince was not amused. “Am I a girl that you give me dolls?” he asked. “This is a gift for a future king.” said the man. “If you look carefully, you’ll see a hole in the ear of each doll.” “So?” The sage handed him a piece of string. “Pass it through each doll,” he said. Intrigued, the prince picked up the first doll and put the string into the ear. It came out from the other ear. “This is one type of person,” said the man. “Whatever you tell him, it comes out from the other car. He doesn’t retain anything.”

The prince picked up the third doll and repeated the process. The string did not reappear from anywhere else. “This is the third type of person.” said the man. “Whatever you tell him is locked up within him, it never comes out.”

“What is the best type of person?” asked the prince. The man handed him a fourth doll, in answer.

When the prince put the string into the doll, it came out from the other ear. “Do it again,” said the sage. The prince repeated the process. This time the string came out from the mouth. 6、A patient of mine, a successful businessman, tells me that before his cancer he would become depressed unless things went a certain way. Happiness was “having the cookie.” If you had the cookie, things were good. If you didn’t have the cookie, life wasn’t worth a damn. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing. Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes sex. At other times, it was the new car, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address.

A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate(前列腺) cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully(悔恨地). “It’s like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid. When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy. But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It’s taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me happy for long. The minute you have the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling or about someone trying to take it away from you. You know, you have to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumbling and be sure that no one takes it away from you. You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it. Having the cookie is not what life is about.

My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him. For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. “Two years ago, cancer asked me, Okay, what’s important? What is really important?” Well, life is important. Life, life, any way you can have it. Life with the cookie. Life without the cookie. Happiness does not have anything to do with the cookie, it has to do with being alive.” He pauses thoughtfully. “Damn, I guess life is the cookie.”

5、You’ve heard the expression, “What you see is what you get.” My grandfather used to say, “If you looked at a tree long enough, it will move” we see what we want to see, Psychologists tell us that nothing controls our lives more than our self-image. We live like the person we see in the mirror. We are what we think we are. If you don’t think you’ll be successful, you won’t. you can’t be it if you can’t see it. Your life is limited to your vision. If you want to change your life, you must change your vision of your life.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was not that famous in 1976 when he met with newspaper reporter. The reporter asked Schwarzenegger. “Now that you’ve retired from bodybuilding, what do you plan to do next?” Schwarzenegger answered very calmly and confidently, “I’m going to be the movie star in Hollywood.” The reporter was shocked and amused at Schwarzenegger’s plan. At that time, it was very hard to imagine how this muscle-bound bodybuilder, who was not a professional actor and who spoke poor English with a strong Austrian accent, could ever hope to be Hollywood’s movie star!

So when the reporter asked Schwarzenegger how he planned to make his dream come true, Schwarzenegger said, “I’ll do it the same way I became the bodybuilder in the world. What I do is to create a vision of who I want to be, then I start living like that person in my mind as if it were already true.” Sounds almost childishly simple, doesn’t it? But it worked! Schwarzenegger did become the highest paid movie star in Hollywood! Remember. “If you can see it, you can be it.”

A successful businessman I know wears a shirt with these words on it: “Don’t just dream your dreams. Chase’em down and tackle’em! “You only get one life to live, so why not live the best life possible? So you can be fully satisfied at what you see and get. Just think a minute!

A.To be a bodybuilder.                             B.To make a lot of money.

C.To create a new vision.                        D.To meet with a reporter

2.The main idea of the passage can be best expressed in the words “_________”.

A.The best way to succeed is to think a minute.

B.where there is a will, there is a way

C.Want to succeed? Just begin to dream!

D.Whoever has the best imagination will succeed

3.When having an interview, the journalist’s attitude to Schwarzenegger’s wish is _______.

       A.doubtful              B.objective              C.positive               D.subjective

4.In the last paragraph, author wants to tell us ___________.

A.not to be strict with ourselves, and enjoy our lives at present

B.not to have a dream only, but try to catch it

C.not to waste our time because it is limited

D.not to learn from others but do what your like

4、I woke up one morning last week to read a story about an athlete who had seemed to have everything.

US track star Marion Jones owned a trophy case filled with medals. She had worldwide fame. She held the high honor of being the first female track and field athlete to win five medals at an Olympics-the 2000 Sydney Games.

But last Friday, the 31-year-old track star tearfully confessed that she had lied to fans, sports official and US federal agents about taking steroids.

The five Olympic medals in her trophy case? Gone. Meaningless. The worldwide fame? Exchanged for infamy. The honor of being the first female track and field athlete to win five medals at an Olympics? Forgotten, wiped off the record books.

“It is with a great amount of shame that I stand before you and tell you that I have betrayed your trust,” Jones confessed.

She’d posed for pictures with fans. She’d attended parties and talked about her accomplishments. But for years she’d slept-or tried to sleep-knowing that much of what she had done was built on a lie.

Now, finally, she’d decided to tell the truth.

“If she had trusted her own natural gifts and allied them to self-sacrifice and hard work, I sincerely believe that she could have been an honest champion at the Sydney Games,” IAAF President Lamine Diack said over the weekend. “Instead, Mario Jones will be remembered as one of the biggest frauds in sporting history.”

Sadly, she won’t be the last. There are still other lurking behind their trophies. They too appear to have everything. They’re superstars, the envy of every young person who has played a sport. But for how long? And at what cost? Every time they look at their trophies and medals they remember that the awards really belong to someone else.

1.The main character in this passage is__________.

       A.the writer himself                                B.Marion Jones

       C.IAAF president                                    D.US federal agents

3.It is still a worry that _____________.

A.Marion Jones has cheated the public so long

B.Marion Jones may be remembered as a fraud in sporting history

C.IAAF president will not forgive Marion Jones

D.cheating is still widely existing in sports competition

3、SEOUL: South Korean scientist have cloned cats that glow red when exposed to the dark, an achievement that could help develop cures for human genetic diseases, the science and Technology Ministry has said.

Three Turkish Angora cats were born in January and February through cloning with a gene that produces a red florescent(熒光的) protein that makes them glow in the dark. One died at birth, but the two others survived, the ministry said.

The ministry claimed it was first time cats with modified genes have been cloned. Scientists from Gyeongsang National University took skin cells from a cat and inserted the florescent gene into them before transplanting the genetically modified cells into eggs.

The development means other genes can also be inserted in the course cloning, leading to the way for producing lab cats with genetic diseases, including those of humans, to help develop new treatments, the ministry said.

“Cats have similar genes to those of humans,” veterinary professor Kong Ⅱ-keun of Gyeongsang National University said.

“We can make genetically modified cats that can be used to develop new cures for genetic diseases.”

Keitaro Kato, a geneticist at Kinki University in western Japan who has cloned fish, said the research could be significant if it eventually helps treat people with genetic disease.
